As of now, trees seem pretty bare. Same old boring green leaves. Big whoop. With Fruit in Minecraft, forests and jungles will be a whole lot more colorful, and you can finally have that piña colada you've always wanted! Or maybe not.
Fruit would be a new way to heal, so anyone who's vegetarian doesn't have to go wheat farming or kill those helpless demon pigs, or having to kill spiders to fish.
WARNING: The following is EXTREMELY under construction. Right now it's just a mess of concepts that I have yet to organize into a nice thread. It should be (somewhat) understandable to most people, but not really that organized and flashy yet. You have been warned.
This thread WILL get better. More fruits will be put into the list, the concepts and stats will be adjusted to be more fun, etc. And I can't do it all without your help, so HELP!!
STUFF ABOUT FRUIT TREES AND BUSHES
Can't have fruit without having fruit trees! Certain places will have the less-common fruit trees dotted amongst the normal leafy trees. ]" title="-<->" /> Fruit would be found on bushes (clumps of leaf blocks with no trunk) and trees ]" title="-<->" /> On world generation, a tree would have a chance of being a fruit tree. The chance and what fruit it would grow would vary depending on the biome. ]" title="-<->" /> Fruit items hang off of a few fruit trees; you can hit them to knock them down and grab them. ]" title="-<->" /> There would be a maximum of about 5-6 fruit that can be on a single tree at a time. If there's less than the maximum, it spawns a new fruit after an amount of time (2 MC days?) ]" title="-<->" /> Leaves would not produce saplings; instead a fruit would have a chance of dropping a seed upon knock-downage, which you can plant in the grass for a new fruit tree. ]" title="-<->" /> Fruit trees will NOT grow if planted in a biome it doesn't generate in. GENERAL FRUITY INFO Fruit would be a cool way to heal and to make pretty gardens and stuff. Since fruit can easily be harvested for a ton of fruit, they heal a low amount. The most any single fruit could heal would be 3 hearts, and very few fruit can do that. The average would be 0.5 to 2 hearts. Fruit can be blended together to make a smoothie or juiced, by using a mixer. More on that later. FRUIT LIST
This is probably what most of you came here for. Banana
Heals: 3 hearts
Juices: No
Tree max: 4-5 Putting a banana in a furnace will result in 2 grilled banana slices. Each of those slices heal for 2 hearts, adding to a total of 4 hearts for each banana you grill. Bananas can only be found on trees in very hot temperatures, near water. Best chances to find them are on beaches and in rainforests. Cherry
Heals:0.5 hearts
Juices: Yes
Tree max: 10-15 Cherries would be pretty common, appearing in Woods, Seasonal Forests and Forests. Orange
Heals: 2 hearts
Juices: Yes
Tree max: 6-8 Oranges would appear in any biome with a temperature between 73 and 55. OJ! :biggrin.gif: Strawberries
Heals: 1 heart
Juices: No
Bush max: 6-9 Strawberries would grow on bushes instead of trees. Strawberry bushes can be planted in ANY biome except for Tundra, making for a very flexible fruit. Apple
Heals: 2 hearts
Juices: Yes
Tree max: 6-7 Apples are almost as diverse as Strawberries. They can grow in any biome above a temperature of 30.
Planned fruitzies to put in the list:
Coconuts
Pomegranates
Lemons and Limes
Guavas
If I haven't made a sprite of it, I'm not putting it in the list. As soon as I do, I put it in the list.
THIS LIST IS VERY DEFINITELY NOT COMPLETE. IF YOU HAVE A FRUIT YOU WANT TO SUGGEST, PLEASE TELL ME! :3
BLENDING AND JUICING
To get fruit juice and blend fruit, you need to craft a Blender. Like this:
[] []
[] []
[] []
Yeah, terrible crafting design. If you have a better design, tell me.
The wood represents the lid and the base, while the glass resembles the actual cup you put the fruitzies in. A crank would be on the side of it, explaining how the heck you're blending stuff without electricity.
Right-clicking the blender would open up the Blending screen. There would be 2 squares for input. Putting one type of fruit in would produce that fruit's juice (if possible), and putting 2 fruit in would result in a smoothie of the two fruit.
Any juice or smoothie heals the same amount as the fruit you put in, plus half a heart. Some examples:
Apple juice: 2.5 hearts
OJ: 2.5 hearts
Apple-strawberry smoothie: 3.5 hearts
Strawberry-banana smoothie: 4.5 hearts
Apple-banana smoothie: 5.5 hearts
Apple-gunpowder smoothie: what the heck?
Raw pork-lava smoothie: Manliness
(okay, so those last two wouldn't be possible.)
Feedback, Suggestions, Hatred, Praise, and the like is extremely welcome. In fact, comment as much as you can on this subject. I love getting replies. :3
Although I think with the current item limit in the game there are other more useful things that should be given priority. If that limit ever increases though, then we better get more fruits! :biggrin.gif:
I think these and random birds would be an awesome update to Minecraft.
And it would be better to leave it unannounced. You just start up your game, make a new world, and suddenly you see all sorts of variety in trees and the environment.
Good idea, but it seems like they heal way too much considering how easy they are to get. finding one full tree/bush gives you enough fruit for over 10 hearts.

Killing 1 pig can sometimes net you a full 10 hearts as well :tongue.gif:
it would be cool if there was no restrictions as to what you could put in the blender, different combinations yield different amounts of health returned.
Wow, I really like this idea. I'm all for putting new items in minecraft, as i have been lurking on the forums for quite some time. (P.S. this is mah first post!) However, I think there could be a better idea implemented than a blender: A mortar and pestle. This could even be used to make potions! I think I saw something involving apothecaries in minecraft. Anyway it would probably be made something like this:
[] [] []
The stick being used to crush the fruits as opposed to some amazingly large jump in technology. (Electricity, and the like needed to even think about creating a blender) I also have yet another idea. Ovens.
Imagine a workbench and a furnace COMBINED. This could be used for farmcraft, AND this to create pies, (meat, apple, peach, and who knows... the legendary TNT pie!?) bread, (moved from furnace to here- furnace makes burnt bread, which heals half of what it originally does) sandwiches, and even more to be your own survivalist chef/ insane crazy mad scientist. You might even be able to boil a bucket of water to throw on enemies! Yes, ovens are slightly off topic, but very relevant to fruit in minecraft (Fruitcraft?), and could be used to craft even more ridiculous items in-game. Amazing idea, I give you 1 .

Once you think about it, a hand-powered blender isn't that technologically advanced. Sure, it wouldn't be as effective as the super-fast speed of electric blenders, but still, it's got blades that spin around. That's enough of a blender for me. :3

Because fruit is so common, it should be stackable, but only in certain containers to prevent spam-healing.
a basket []
[] []
it has 4 slots in which fruit can be stacked in packs of 64 (or less)
you can place them in your normal inventory, but cannot be stacked
fruit automatically goes into the basket when picked up, if there is free room.
the basket must be placed on the floor to see the items inside
Hmm, I don't want to go into fruit baskets until a standard form of extra portable inventory is in place. It would be kinda unfair to have extra space for your fruitz while having to cram everything else in the same old inventory.

blender ftw.

porkchop and wood shake here i come!
Dead Rising much? I actually would like some insane combos that have special effects on you (fruit + gunpowder = explosion? fruit + redstone = activating stepped-on redstone?) or something. Maybe you could make an iron-and-obsidian shake to have like 500 hearts added to your health bar because you're so manly.
But one thing bugs me... Banana don't grow on trees, they grow on herbs... And the edible we eat nowadays, are sterile...
Fertile they are basically pith and pips...
So I suggest 2 types of Banana, eating and growing.
Eating works how you described with 0 chance of seeds,
Growing can be used, to make 1-3 Seeds...
Just an idea!
Huh, you're right. The banana "tree" is a mere 2.7 meters high, so that means you can't just stick a banana on a tree and call it a banana tree. However, I don't want to create an entirely new object specifically for bananas. Perhaps when Notch creates palm trees, you could make banana trees really short palm trees with bananas on them?
I think a coconut would be a good fruit to add to this list. The outer covering could be use to make something. The inner white part or the fruit would be edible. The coconut milk could be used for something like a smoothie. To seperate these parts you put them in a workbench or something special(idk about this part). I also do not know how to make a coconut tree. And kind of like the banana they would be found only on sand and most likely near the water. Post replies and improvements please. :Diamond:s for this idea.
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot- proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. So far, the Universe is winning.

But of course! Coconut Palms! I'll add that fruit in.
@Thea_Notix: Like I said, I don't want to create a completely new object only for bananas; It'd use up a ton of more sprites, and I want to conserve sprites as much as I can with this, since the fruit sprites would take up quite a few, and unless I'm mistaken, there's a limit of 255 different item sprites that can be in the game, unless Notch adds something like 2 sprite catagories. ("texture=sprite2_55"?) I'm mainly worried about how much space all of this will take up.
Well you need to think about how to hold it so you could either use a mushroom soup bowl
[] [] [] []
[] []
or a glass. [] []
I support it too.
I've thought about this, and I think it's too much of a hassle to do that. Bowls (and buckets) don't make any sense for fruit juice, and I don't want to tear down the local desert just to make a few cups. It'd be better to just have the smoothie already in the glass.
So banana trees could be maybe 3-5 blocks high with leafy fronds (leaf blocks) and coconut trees can be 5-10 blocks high. The coconut can maybe heal 3 hearts, because they are somewhat hard to obtain (high up in the tree).
