That thing looks ridiculous. It really doesn't fit in with pigs/cows/sheep. Maybe it would be alright if you made a more realistic porcupine (smaller than a pig, no "bone-spikes"), but adding weird fantasy animals doesn't seem like a good idea, especially when we're missing so many common animals in the first place.
Actually, I was watching the Machinima livestream, and Notch actually said he wants Minecraft to be fantasy, that why he wont add guns. I assume something like this won't be too far apart. So no real harm here. I fully support.

I think you're getting "ridiculous" confused with "original."
For such a great game, it's horrible that the developer(s) of Minecraft originally chose to put the most generic creatures in the game- spiders, pigs, cows, skeletons...
I do think we should have some more real-life animals- but not your average barnyard things. We should have animals such as ostriches or crocodiles, stuff that you don't see every day. How "ridiculous" is this creature compared to ghasts or creepers?

That's fine, in their respecitive biomes (savannah, swamp). I encourage variety, actually.

Ghasts and creepers are monsters, though. Unless this thing is supposed to be a hostile enemy, I think it's a better idea to fill up the passive creature slots with existing animals before we start making them up.
(Fernace = Despencer)
(Skeleton = Scarecrow)
That would be the crafting recipe. It would use anything involving redstone dust and the scarecrow's head would have a small (barely noticeable) hole. It would be perfect for training purposes like a seige on a enemy mob fortress.
Cats drink out of faucets, hunt mice outside, leave furballs everywhere, stand mesmerized at the sun, and they answer nature's call in sand. I am "videocat" because we have a lot in common.
good idea, though xD
Its a larger then a porcupine, between the size of a pig and a cow. It has spikes, not needles. I should make a porcupine though...
Do not meddle in the affairs of Creepers, for thou art weak and easily blown to bits.

Sempre memento mori.
