I would also like to address the people who wish to suggest Redstone Dust be involved with this suggestion. I am very opposed to putting the Dust in this suggestion because it is absurd and would hold no use. If however, if you are not convinced, then I am also against it's involvement because it is an unoriginal idea; an overused one at that. There seems to be some misunderstanding that Redstone dust is magical and will make your dreams come true if you craft it with something. It's not Pixie Dust. You cannot sprinkle it over your problems and make everything all better.
Hates you. I absolutely think most ideas like these should involve redstone. (don't flame me that I shouldn't post if I don't like the thread, its just that I like the idea, but the "I am very opposed to putting the Dust in this suggestion"
part just makes me feel bad)
smiley spam:
But...
It means that redstone won't be used in the crafting. You could still hook it up to a pressure plate to take pictures from far away.

He's partially right. I didn't want to put RS in any of the recipes because EVERYONE wants Redstone to do something else other than it's use for Wires. However, he's wrong in the fact that the way I have the Camera set right now, is that it's a hand-held tool, and will be unable to be placed on the ground. And since you can't hook redstone up to things you're holding, the answer is no.
I'm skipping straight to my response here, so somebody might have already said this, but...why not just have the camera dispense the photo? You right click, and -pop- out comes the photo for you to pick up and then place as a painting/screenshot. No silly creating a frame or anything, that's almost as bad as going to Kodak.
YES YES YES! Best idea I've heard for this. I'm glad someone had the same idea for this as me!
personally i think having to use
= photo
is ridiculous and too close to the recipe. It's supposed to be idiotproof, right? No crafting table, just snap-n-place photos.
Also, what about it does the same as screenshot but ingame as in if you press f5 and take a photo you're in the photo? Would that work?
EDIT: Also, I know you don't want redstone in the camera, and aren't really interested in it being placed, I think you should be able to craft:
=camera
[] [] []
[] []
[]
and make a pleaceable one. The placeable one (like real remote cameras) is activated by a wire, not magically controlled by the pixies. Better idea? Worse idea? You decide.

I posted this in a thread of my own, but it got shot down by some random guy,
A camera would be made like this
= Redstone
= Leather
Cameras would be placed utility blocks, like furnaces or dispensers. Activating the camera with redstone would take a photo and drop the photo from the camera block, to be picked up and either kept or framed in a frame made like this:
= Group photo of you and the server residents
Camera's would consume photo paper, made from gold and redstone piled on top of a piece of paper.

A. You essentially just said why it makes sense to have RedStone.
"some misunderstanding that Redstone dust is magical and will make your dreams come true if you craft it with something. It's not Pixie Dust."
Your right: It seems to represent WIRES and ELECTRICITY.
Without it somehow integrated, it seems like the camera is "magical and will make your dreams come true" without any reasoning.
That said, I am still fine with RedStone not being in the recipe, what would remove my support is
B."the way I have the Camera set right now, is that it's a hand-held tool, and will be unable to be placed on the ground."
That is just silly. Cake is ground place-able, so there is no reason what-so-ever that the camera shouldn't be.
If you are suggesting having the camera only be a hand-held item, then I agree with the group of "Why not use F2, and/or your computer's Screen Capture function" group, because it become the same thing.

JolliCraft is probably the best Texture pack out there.

THANK YOU.
This idea is very simple, and very useful.
That's why it's minecraft material.
Now, I also have another reason for saying this.
Now, on Smp, who hasn't had their chests looted, and come back to see all that work gone? NOw, that gives it a practical use.
:Skeleton:= theif
=camera
= redstone
:Logs^:= pressure plate
See, this is where redstone comes in handy.

Exactly. And if you'd look at what the camera looks like, it's an old fashioned shutter-box-- which light-sensitive paper to capture light when it passes through a lens for a split second, thus giving you a picture. Given for simplicities purpose, no development phase is needed. But nowhere in the camera should there be wires or electricity, like a digital camera.
And yes, cake is a placeable object. The problem with your argument is that it is placeable because Notch promised it would be, and so that you can eat it. But a camera is not edible, and since there are not three click functions, Left click is ALWAYS mining and right click would be to take a picture. If you tried to place it on the ground using a right click... You'd take a picture of the ground.
And lastly, if you would just READ the post, instead of skim through it to quote things I've said to fuel your argument, you'd've read the difference between a Camera and an F2 Screen-cap. So lemme just highlight that for you:
A Camera is an essential part of sharing good times. And that’s what online play is about in Minecraft: having fun with your friends, surviving, and taking care of each other (Sometimes in the way of “The Godfather”) But currently, there is no function to allow you to take pictures from Minecraft to show to your friends, other than a Screenshot function from your computer. But even then, you would only be able to show that picture OUTSIDE of the game! How much easier would it be to simply take the picture and pass it around to your friends in-game, where they’d all be-- rather than giving them a link to a webpage on the internet
Maybe it could have zoom, also maybe you could place photos like paintings, make the frames then when you take the photo it automatically gets put into a frame. Simple.
Maybe it could have zoom, also maybe you could place photos like paintings, make the frames then when you take the photo it automatically gets put into a frame. Simple.
A zoom would be a nice feature, but how would you use it?

A zoom would be a nice feature, but how would you use it?
Maybe by adding new controls specifically for it or the mouse scroll wheel, right click the camera when in inventory, that selects it, press inventory button when finished that way you can zoom, left click removes blocks, right click takes the photo, scroll wheel to control zoom, inventory button stops using it. Maybe a timer option could be cool so your in the photo.
Perhaps there could be both a color and sepia version of the camera? Also, since the camera serves no economical function, I think that in the recipe the diamond should be replaced with gold.
I love the idea.
However, it's shouldn't be impossible to apply a redstone current to it. Perhaps be able to mount a camera on a wall, place a torch next to it, and then connect a pressure plate or button to it some distance away. Then, if someone walks over the pressure plate or clicks the button, it takes a picture. I don't think levers would go very well with the camera idea, though :/
The idea of cameras in Minecraft has a lot of potential.
And another thing: Where do the pictures go? Obviously, the pictures must be a solid entity, or an item that can be held, dropped, and "used" or looked at. So, if you're holding the camera, the pictures would go into your inventory, but what about if it's mounted on a wall? Does it spit the picture out? Or maybe you could connect a chest to it for the pictures...
I like the idea of hooking up a pressure plate to the camera, because then you could safely get pictures of hostile mobs. Imagine that! Close-up pictures of zombies, spiders, skeletons, and creepers!
It might also be good for security systems in SMP games. With pressure plates, you can know who's been by your house. This last suggestion is assuming that you can connect a chest to it, instead of just having the camera spit the pictures out and the intruder being able to pick up the evidence. It would be great to prevent griefing, especially with a chest-locking mod.
Now I've gone and gotten myself all excited about cameras and their possibilities. I hope to see this added to the game soon!

What if, the camera its self had a small inventory where you could store film and pictures that have already been taken. also, I agree with the idea that you should be able to craft the camera with something to make it placeable, that would fix the problem of right clicking to place it or tack a picture.
Okay okay, ffs. The only way that you would be able to place a camera on a tri-pod would be to craft it onto it. I don't like that idea either, but you can't quite Right Click to place on the stand. That would cause you to take a picture of it!
Perhaps I should Introduce a Middle Click, allowing you to have a secondary click ability...
if it was in color it wouldnt really fit the theme

I wanted to set up camera traps.
Tripod?
Redstone activated?
Errr?
Lightstone dust for the picture?
