well, it should be simplified a bit (having to remember all of those would be confusing for new people) but I like the idea of smoke, flamable gas (doesn't act like tnt, just burns) and the gas that puts out fire.
If there is ever more than those 3, it would simply be too confusing.
We have a lot of blocks with many differing properties, don't we? I don't see how gases would be too hard to understand, not any more than it would understanding the many blocks we have now.
Also, you know that list is outdated, right? Like, very outdated?
.... Ascendium seems very creative but about the elevator explanation.... how will i get down? anyway maybe there will be a vent of some sort that doesn't let solids through but lets gravel, sand, liquids, and gas through. maybe there will be Muidnecsa (lol) that share most trait with Ascendium except down. that will help elevators.... maybe when vents are activated with redstone nothing can go through. thinking on how elevators will work. btw leather isn't very strong of a material while gas and liquids can leak through, maybe if rubber was added it would replace the leather, but overall very nice.

You know how two or three blocks of water can cushion any fall? :biggrin.gif:
For the love of god, NO. This is a game where you can't even burn yourself with a torch, and you want to take it in the exact opposite direction, by adding deadly flammable gas? Minecraft just wouldn't be Minecraft anymore if Notch puts this in the game.
Also, if it actually acted just like water except it flows upwards, it would not be easy to get rid of. It would be a huge pain in the ass. To get rid of a pool of water you must destroy every square individually by placing blocks of dirt or whatever in it.

I guess I should have probably added that the patches should be small.
But honestly, the gases are pretty visible, and a person must be mentally stunted, or very unobservant to not notice it, of which they should not be playing the game in the first place. Honestly, the way you writing leads me to believe you dislike hazards in general. If you are not careful, you could slip and fall into lava. If you are not observant, a creeper will sneak up on you. I fail to see how gases are any different.

How Will Ascendium Go Through Water? This takes planning.
I actualy like this Idea, or at least encorperating some parts of it. Nameing each empty space, say above ground or in natural caves, would create some lagg issues. Although a few explosive and toxic pockets underground would be interesting, too much would be a problem.
There was at least one other topic about this, possibly more. I remember it because it was one of the first discussions I participated in on these forums. =P
I like all of these ideas. but half the power of TNT?
I think it should be closer to 1/3.
anyway I think notch ought to add some form of gasses into the game.
also how about steam? if water is close enough to fire or lava it would turn to steam. which acts as a normal gas. possibly with heat damage?
Like the steam, and maybe even less, just like the power of a ghast fire ball, but doing more damage.
I like the idea of just keeping it to simple elements - and that fire makes smoke...it'd basically be a water block that flows upward with a grey tint and a high transparency, but unlike water maybe it would just dissipate over time instead of stacking everywhere. Also unlike water, it would spread on seeking the highest elevation forever, all the way to the top of the sky if it gets outside.
Torches wouldn't make it, but furnaces and burning objects would. There'd be a limit per chunk to the number of simultaneous smoke-generating blocks so a forest fire wouldn't drag down everyone's performance.
I like the idea of making a realistic balance as to where you could actually put a furnace - they would all need chimneys to be used, or else the smoke would just blow back in your face, taking a half heart every couple of seconds or so.
And it can't pass through doors, so you could use levers and iron doors and redstone computers to make smoke signals! You could relay the data about kills in your mob trap at level 8 all the way up to your sky fortress at level 120.
Anyway, my first post. I do thoroughly love this game.
The first 3 types of gasses are perfectly acceptable. Just the right amount, and the types of hazards most would think about.
The other types are unnecessary.
Breathing apparatus, too, is not needed. With the game's current level of technology, it feels like gold rush era California and I don't think they had breathing apparatus like that back then.
Just the hazards would be enough. The solution to the problem would be venting the area or avoiding it. It would also require some thought about regular venting for underground structures during construction, to avoid accidents.
All 3 of the basic ones should be harvestable with a jar, made with glass blocks in a U shape.
I don't thinks that gasses should be added until later in the game, when it gets more complicated, but i think smoke would be perfect to add right now. Houses and settlements would have to be designed with vents around fires, ect.
Um, its pretty much inverted water with differing properties. Not too much, unlike other ideas out there.

I can also see from the comments this is a very controversial topic.
