Alright then. The name "Moa" is going to bug me, but I can cope. I don't think its running speed should be higher than that of a minecart though. I suspect the most coding Notch would have to do for this thing is giving it a controllable jump. Though maybe he could make it automatic...
Don't feel like I've discounted your suggestion entirely, Moa was just what I was happiest with after some searching around. Balmoa is not bad, but I like to have some significance to the names I give creatures. I try to tie them to mythical creatures or figures (if appropriate) or give them a good descriptive name. I was thinking of Strider, but then it was too close to the WoW creature.
Anyway, I am open to changing the name, if a good one comes along. So feel free to do some research and see what you can come up with!

I feel that they should be able to jump 1 block high, but retain their forward momentum when jumping. This would allow long jumps, but not being able to scale mountains any better than you can. This, combined with a slow acceleration, will make them only an advantage when running across relatively flat areas or jumping a larger gap.
Perhaps they could have a reduced fall acceleration? basically, make them less affected by gravity, but have them still able to end up falling at the same max speed as you, but it takes them longer to get to that speed while falling. They would start flapping their wings frantically like a chicken does while in the air.
I think one block high is a little short considering their height. Look at those legs man! They should have some ups.
As far as reduced fall damage, I think I'm against it. Perhaps for a variant, but I don't imagine ostriches would do very well if they fell off a cliff.
Interesting, would the Cockatrice be ridable? And if so, would it still slow down enemies when you're riding it?
Unless someone can convince me otherwise, I would say the Cockatrice is not ride-able. I think it's pretty clever and, though not evil, pretty predatory to humans and the like and would rather kill and eat you than let you ride it. Perhaps you could throw the saddle on, but it would buck and run and try to attack you the entire time. You wouldn't be able to control it, for sure.
Dude ur good at these mob things if ur the guy who also designed the golem.
Ye i want this, i want this, the usual REAL animals are boring at times :/
I did design the most recent of the Golem suggestions. You can always tell it's mine from the way the title is structured. I'm a big nut for structure.
I'm glad you like my designs! Hopefully I can implement them soon if DrZhark releases a tutorial on how he added creatures or once Beta comes out and the MOD support and API are released, I'll probably be able to make a pack shortly there after.

I see. Would multiple Cockatrices slow you down more than one, with the possibility (if enough are there) of turning you to stone (killing you and making a statue of yourself)? I wonder this, as I read up on the Cockatrice, and it says they had a Medusa like ability of turning people to stone with their gaze.
I like it, but the Cockatrice should slow you down only after it hits you or something. That would just be annoying to be slowed down suddenly just because it saw you.

I would probably be against the possibility of getting turned to stone completely, but not entirely against multiple Cockatrices' gazes amplifying the slowification.

Annoying? Or terrifying? Imagine walking through the woods at night and suddenly you realize you're moving slowly. You check to see if you stepped in some mud (an overworld block that I think should be made) but realize that you are in fact trapped in the gaze of a unseen Cockatrice. But where is it?! It's hiding in the shadows, and by the time you spot it's glowing green eyes, it's far too late!
Once again, you present another great mob suggestion. Like someone said before, it looks a lot like a Terror Bird, which would fit in nicely with Exdrognith's JurassiCraft.

For some reason these come across as solitary creatures, and have as much chance of spawning by itself as with a loose herd.
I also want to confirm; these would basically be neutral mobs, friendly unless attacked, then they turn hostile.
I was thinking that the Cockatrice would be the solitary mob, while the regular Moa spawns in a sort of pack/flock of 2-3 Moas. The Moa can act a little like DrZhark's lion, where they hunt passive mobs.

Why? I think that if enough of them would look at you, you should die, with the whole your body being stone thing just for it to make a little more sense in the mythology of the Cockatrice.
Just because I think that getting killed for being in view of too many of one creature would be a bit unbalanced. On the plus side, I do think that if there were like five Cockatrices then you'd really be slowed to an essential stop and would be helpless against their attacks.
Also this form of petrification, where it slows/stops you, turns the myth into a more natural form. The effect being used to make hunting much easier instead of being a scary way to die.

Ok, I see where your opinion is coming from, and when you put it into that context, yeah I have to agree.
EDIT: Also, would hitting an enemy with a Cockatrice arrow, and then another one slow them down even more like the multiple Cockatrice stares do?
Hrmm... good question. I would say it depends on one factor. If the recipe for a cockatrice arrow only makes one arrow, then yeah. Shooting it with more than one amplifies the effect. If it makes four arrows like the normal recipe, then I think that it should either be one level of slowness, that can be lengthened with multiple shots, or that the effect only has two levels.

Not sure which I would prefer.
I think it would be best if it makes one arrow a feather, making them rarer and more valuable.
Another thing, if a Cockatrice is looking at you, would hurting it stop the effect for a moment (like the Cockatrice cringes with the pain and closes it's eyes for a second).

Yeah, I think I like that. I probably wouldn't make an animation for his eye closing, but I think when he gets knocked back, that would definitely make him break his concentration for a moment and allow you to duck behind a tree or something.
If a Cockatrice looks at another Cockatrice, would it be slowed down? If not, than is that because the Cockatrice can control what it petrifies, or because the Cockatrice is immune to the ability, and if so, would a Cockatrice arrow work on a Cockatrice?
I would also like to say, the easiest way to escape the Cockatrices gaze would be to place a wall between you and it to break it's line of sight. Just wanted to add that.

Don't worry about it. These questions help me figure out what changes to make!
I would say the attack is a conscious choice for the Cockatrice, and that they aren't immune to their own attacks. So the feathers would work on them.
Also, yeah, breaking the line of sight is a great way to escape the effect.

Ok, hears another, can you distract Cockatrices by throwing a piece of meat, a fish or an egg which would cause all Cockatrice nearby to run to eat it first?

Added Cockatrice variant to the OP!
Hope you guys like it.
