You know Ehnonimus, you really need to add something about NO LINKING on the front page. Maybe under the faq. In bold. Twice if necessary.
I would, except I'm worried that might make people think that I'm against linking (which I'm not) and immediately stop reading the rest of the proposal. It's better that people read it, go "ooh, that a really good idea even though it doesn't have linking" than ignore it completely.
You should add a way to link mine-carts together so they don't get messed up all the time.
Linking minecarts is a tough challenge for both game design and programming that is outside the scope of this proposal. We're trying to keep things simple by sticking with the basics, but we'll probably look into it if we get to doing Minecarts Mk.III.
I was actually going to stay silent until Minecarts mk. III, for that's when linking should be tackled, BUT, as I don't have the technical knowledge of java - I'll ask now, so I can chew on the idea more.
Does java have a "vector" similar to how c++ (most current version) has? (Real programmers should see where I'm going with this.. )
Just found this a short while ago and while I really have no problem using powered minecarts to push materials from one side of my mine to the other. I do find myself having issues with getting myself from one place to another in a minecart. Its somewhat frustrating that a powered cart can push ~3200 cobblestone blocks up a steep incline but apparently my miner has eaten too much cake.
I also love the fact that the recipes for said items are both logical and reasonable.
But what I really really love are the cart detectors, as a redstone junkie those alone pose endless possibilities.... ok not endless but damn I'd love to have those in the game.

That's how I feel.Your avatar is cool, but what is it from?
Anyway, what if we made a dispenser cart, which could work two ways.
A: It could shoot out items to work as a turret.
B: It could act like a hopper cart.

To answer your question:
His avatar is from The Vision of EscaFlowne, a giant mecha anime set in a medieval-style parallel universe. It's also the only Saturday morning cartoon I ever watched religiously (when I was young, my parents only let me watch an hour of tv on the weekends so I had to use it wisely). His name (Zaibach) is a reference to the show. F**k yeah, Escaflowne.
Also, regarding your suggestion about the dispenser cart. I'd much rather see The Allocator implemented in conjunction with the Storage Cart than have a new dispenser cart. I think a dispenser cart would be pretty impractical since you would be super limited by the direction it dispenses. If it dispenses to the side, you can't pick which side, and if it dispenses to the front or back, you run the risk of items blocking your carts from moving on the tracks (due to magic blocking powers of items). The blocking problem is also the reason why I think arrow shooting carts are a bad idea.
The Allocator on the other hand, is much more flexible and could be placed as a receiver to remove items from storage carts and place them into waiting chests. That, combined with the Minecarts Mk.II system could make for some very, very, epic automated mining operations indeed....

Thanks, but what about the hopper cart idea, when it is powered by redstone, it dispenses all the items to the bottom right automatically.
Thanks, but what about the hopper cart idea?[/quote]
I didn't answer because I wasn't sure what you mean by a "hopper cart". Can you explain how it would work or provide a link?

Hmm, I see. So how would they work if introduced to minecraft? Would they dump items below them? Beside? If a side, which side? I'm assuming they'd have a "right click to operate" type interface. Is player interaction the only way to activate them? So many questions....I feel the Allocator is a much simpler, and more effective method that's already been tried and true through the mod. Sometimes problems unique to Minecraft require solutions unique to Minecraft and I think the Allocator is such a solution.

Perhaps, hopper cart empties when smacked by player, much like a collapsing chest does when broken down, but the cart itself wont break down unless its smacked repeatedly like the powered cart or a brick block? OR, when tracks placed on allocator, hopper cart storage cart stops on it (due to minecart mkII's stopper block!), it sucks out automagically! Would need to be implemented like a companion to the allocator (which sounds pretty neat).
How it would move again, after being automagically sucked dry, I can't answer. Timing redstone circuit perhaps?
Note : More rolling stock, linkage, elevators, would be best for mk III, IMHO. :smile.gif:
EDIT: Just went through the Allocator's proposal, it in itself would be better than a hopper.

They would immediately dump all of their items under them and to the right. If you wanted the left, you place it in a different way. Yes, it could work with right clicking, but it could also be powered by redstone. I it doesn't work on full stop tracks or booster tracks. This can coexist with the allocator, by dropping items next to it,or dropping items in a hole or water can transport them to the allocator chests. I don't want to rely on ideas with the allocator or other ideas too much, because Notch could like this and not the allocator, and some of our ideas would not be implemented.

Forget the edit, your idea would be awesome.
but what if the allocator is not implemented?

Dumping items under them wouldn't work since any items on the track would immediately gum up the works. Also, what do you mean by "it"? Second sentence you said "...you place it in a different way." Place what in a different way? Please clarify.
Regarding your concern with "relying on one idea over others", I'd like to clarify that I'm not relying on either idea. Minecarts Mk.II has been an independent suggestion topic from the beginning and has always followed the idea of only changing things that will fix the core issues of mine cart game play. Allocators and Hopper Carts are "extras" and are therefore trivial in comparison to the important issues. That aside, the following is a list of reasons why I'd bet my chips on Notch adding the Allocator over a "hopper cart" any day:
[*:1i0276si] The Allocator is a smart, simple idea that has already proved it's usefulness and thanks to it's mod, it's already ten steps ahead of all other suggestions since it's been proven to work effectively in-game.
[*:1i0276si] The Allocator has a level of flexibility that a hopper cart can never achieve. A hopper cart would be useful for a very specific purpose in the game, and arguably one that overlaps with the chest cart. It's essentially a chest cart that can unload itself. On the other hand, the Allocator will not only serve the purpose of a hopper cart and unload carts, but since it's a building block, it can also serve in dozens of other applications and situations away from the tracks. I'd say this gives the Allocator much more value per block than the hopper cart. Value = more likely to be added.
[*:1i0276si] The hopper idea is still unproven and is missing some key mechanics that will ensure it works if added to the game.
[*:1i0276si] The goal of Minecarts Mk.II is to get the proposal added to the game. Having extra stuff like a Hopper Cart would only reduce the chances of getting it added to the game. Since the Allocator is a separate suggestion, it's less likely to affect Minecart Mk.II's chances of being added.
By "Plugin" I assume you mean "mod". Right now, the mod isn't complete so there is no download. Check back regularly for updates though on both the suggestion and the mod.

Me and my friend came up with some tracks, was gonna post it until I saw this thread.
They were:
Booster track
Divider track, Y (also uses redstone)
Pressurepadtrack
Crossroadtrack
Glad I could save you the trouble of writing it all up. :-) Feel free to suggest your own ideas if you think they would improve Minecarts Mk.II, but before you do please read the original post to see if your suggestion has already been addressed. (The FAQ is a good place to check for these things)
You sir get one free BUMP and one free hopefully Notch will see this and say "Hmm I see this but I don't believe it! It's SO GOOD! I'm gonna put this into the game!"
I hope Notch implements something like this.... This would be awesome

Thanks for the support guys, I'd love for Notch to take notice and add it to the game. As good as it is now though, there's still things to improve. Keep checking back for updates! :smile.gif:
fun fact: I'm in school still and it's the end of the term so final exams are happening. For me, this means less time to Minecraft because I'm studying and/or doing school work. For you it means updates to Minecarts Mk.II might be small and/or infrequent for the next couple weeks. I'll still be taking time to answer questions though so keep 'em coming. Support and compliments are also nice since they keep me happy during long crappy study periods. ;-)
Once exam time is done, I'll be back with full steam.
