Elmach is for the most part, correct. It's currently too complicated to have boosters with adjustable speeds
Why is this btw? I would think the programming would be similar to "Upon minecart touching booster track, increase velocity by [increment] (Which is 10% in the example in first post)" So why not make it like a note box? It has different settings when right clicked, and stay that way till changed. I figure right click acts as a 'use block' sort of action. Example: Chests when used display an inventory, doors when used open or close, notes when used change pitch. So I purpose we use the programming lines from the note block and so that "when used" instead of changing pitch we change the speed increment (Suggested by 10% at a time).
If the programming is nothing like that I humbly apologize for the waste of time.

No, it's a valid point and entirely possible. The main reason why I've resisted adding this feature is because of the difficulty in showing a player what speed setting the track is at. When tested, a note block returns a pitch that players can quickly recognize and adjust if necessary. Judging what speed a booster track is at would be a lot harder and would most likely require some sort of visual cue built into the track piece like a power bar. I haven't yet figured out a way to do this without compromising the clean simplicity of the booster-brake's current appearance.

I like your Idea a lot, it would solve several problems and make minecarts more functional.
But I think the costs may be a little to low. Maybe increase the redstone costs as you get tons of it from mining and you dont really need that much for anything else atm.
I'm glad you like the idea but I have to disagree that the costs for redstone are too low. Judging by the the number of other official redstone related objects that only use a single piece of redstone (or none!) in their construction, I'm pretty sure redstone is intended by Notch to be cheap and abundant. If you have a surplus, it's probably because you just haven't had a project to use it on. Personally, I usually run out of redstone when wiring up my automated stations. I'd suggest experimenting with it more. Perhaps rig up a circuit which automatically opens the door to your home and plays a little song with note blocks when you enter?

Well since the note block, after showing the note color, returns to its natural state of... well a note block, maybe the booster/brake could use the same kind of display. Showing a 10% or a 20% upon a hit, then showing no other signs besides whether it is on or off. Players will have to keep track of their booster/breaks of course, same as their note blocks. As far as the display itself, Small yellow numbers with a red outline came to mind first.
(Side note: Recently started playing with aforementioned note blocks, can't get a good doorbell sound, any suggestions?)

First off, I love this.
Second, Ive already thought of some things to do with this:
1) If you have a huge netowrk of minecarts in SMP, you can just place a lever in your staton, use a little redstone wire, and easily decide whether minecarts stop there or not. This makes complicated systems of brakes obsolete.
2) Using the detector, you could chain it up to a booster right after it, or even on it, nect to it, whatever. If you make a bunch of these, you could get a really good booster chain with minimal redstone usage.
But are the new pieces snap-to? LIke...Let me explain. With a redstoe wire piece, it snaps to another piece of wire, but for things like redstone repeaters, you have to manually place wire until it faces the repeater, or it wont work. But if you have a redstone wire, does it snap to the track, or the detector? I hope so..
Also, if that is the case, you could have redstone circuits go THROUGH the track, activating it, and still fulfilling its first purpose. This would disable the need to dig a little tunnel under the track, using up distance, and therefore needing less repeaters.
IDEA:
One more thing you can add would be is a redstone trampoline type machine. If powered by redstone, any cart would be launched upwards some amount of distance.

=cart.
Assume there is track on top of every brick.
bedrock=track w/ trampoline.
But carts will maintain thier speed, so if a cart moving at speed x and hits a tramploline, a cart traveling at speed 2x will fly twice as far. This could be used to make escelators or elevators, and to seperate carts depending on thier speed. Also, on that note, could be used to send carts 2 different ways. It would have some uses, but would be hard to make, because when carts are on a track, they are not effected by gravity in certain ways, as they cant fly off of a track simply by the track going down a sudden downhill drop. So it seems that minecarts are basically glued to the track, so it would have to seperate the cart from the track. I havent thought of how these would be crafted.
That idea is just one I came up with pretty quickly, so it's basically trash.
But I love this idea, hte Minecart MK II thread.
I give the creator of the idea a . <:3 What? Pet sheep are great!
Fine, heres your silly diamonds.

As soon as the note block was released I had considered using a pop-up animation to displaying booster settings for an adjustable booster but dismissed it on grounds of programming complexity. When the redstone delayer/switch was released, it further reinforced the idea that adjustable blocks are an acceptable part of the minecraft world. Now that I think about it, an adjustable booster makes a lot sense and I'm not really sure why I didn't add this feature sooner. It'll be up to Glitchfinder as to whether or not he can add it to the mod though.
In other news, Glitchfinder recently replied to my email saying he'll be back on the project and was away due to school obligations. I'm super excited to have him back on board and he said we can look forward to an updated release of the mod in the near future!
[EDIT] @fleashosio, I just noticed your post and it looks like you have a lot of interesting ideas. I'm afraid I don't have time to respond properly at the moment since I have to run off to work, but I'll get back to you as soon as I can.

Idea 1: Something about levers and making brakes obsolete.
I'm really sure what you mean by this. I think you have a bit more explaining to do.
Idea 2: Using detectors to power booster chains.
Yes, this is completely possible, however adding a single redstone torch beside or under the booster track serves the same purpose and saves you all the materials you would have spent crafting detector blocks.
Idea 3: Minecart trampoline block.
It could be fun, but also sounds really gimmicky and unnecessary. It can only really perform a single specific function and that function is already covered by normal track going up a ramp. I don't think it really fits the style of minecraft or the Minecarts Mk.II proposal but it might make a fun mod.
(Pardon me for creating another reply, I don't know how things work around here, so theres no editing for me! <:l)
Amother way to get a minecart bboosted up without redstone track pieces, or any booster, is just making a circle.
A circle that goes downhill. I dont know how I would make a picture of this, so I will describe it.
1) find a flat piece of ground. You might need some room for this.
2)Place one dirt block somewhere.
3) Place a track piece on it. then make it go downhill by 1, then straight ahead for 1 block. tHis should be-straight, down, straight.
4) Do this again, but rotated 90 degrees, where the 2nd downhill ramp is in front of the straighaway of the first ramp. Do this until you have a circle.
This makes any cart with a player or mob in it lose momentum slower than it is gained, so you just go faster and faster. Now, everyone has heard of this, but what would happen if you replace all the flat tracks with the redstone boosters? If you put a lever inside the circle, you could be sent on another track after enough boosting, so using the redstone boosters, you get this compact little circle..that gets you up to mach 2. :smile.gif:
In regard to the adjustable booster, I came up with two ideas on how to tell if how powerful they are.
1) The number of arrows on it. When powered up, you can change the number of arrows that are lit up. One is 10% and two is 20%.
2) The color of the arrows. The color changes from red to blue or what ever color you want.
Sounds neat. Maybe you could create a screenshot with regular track and draw over it to show how it would work. I still don't 100% understand.

I feel a little stupid - for the longest time when I saw links to this I thought it WAS Minecart Mania, which I'd already dismissed as being not for me. So glad I finally clicked here and read through it: this is exactly what's needed. Excellent job.
I'm glad you clicked here too! I also felt that Minecart Mania didn't fulfill my needs as a mine cart solution and that's why I started this project. Once the accompanying mod is completed, we'll be one step closer to having that "no-nonsense solution for mine carts" that we've been hoping for. After that, it's just a matter of getting the mod really popular and having Notch take notice. ;-)
This is something that I really want to see in Minecraft, whether as a mod, or integrated by Notch into the game itself. I've never tried to make a mine cart track specifically because of how hard and confusing it is to utilize the booster glitch. With this, I definitely intend to utilize mine carts in both my mines, and simply as modes of transportation. I hope you make this for both SSP and SMP, too. I enjoy occasionally playing Single Player, but I also happen to have my own little server that a friend or two get on, along with myself. Once I figure out how to install server mods, and if this becomes one such mod, I will happily apply it to my server. Thank you for coming up with this idea, and I look forward to actually being able to use it in my Minecraft experience in the future.
May you find many :Diamond:'s in your excavations!
[EDIT] Well, apparently I'm a moron. Seems that those mods that I put in Minecraft.jar also affect the server since I am the owner of it. I feel kinda silly right now. Wait, nevermind. Can't seem to actually use the recipes. Seems I will have to try and figure out just how this works...
[EDIT] Hm, seems you can't actually add new items because they're client-side. Well, that stinks. I'll still enjoy using this in Single Player, though.

Nah, the point of the yellow/orange/red is to keep it in the redstone theme. The two arrows able to be different colors eliminates the need for extra colors.
