Just wondering, but could you explain what you could actually use the unoccupied detector for? I can't think of anything you can't currently do with redstone alone.
I see plenty of things such as automated triage, minecart storage rooms, etc...
Fair enough, I couldn't think of anything but an automated timer from a cart going around a track and sending a signal off somewhere at a set interval.

however: is there any reason why the full-stop piece should be directed instead of stopping carts directly on it?
In case you wanted to leave the cart on a booster track piece in order to send it when triggered by redstone.
fair enough. i would propose a slightly different solution, however:
[*:2c2spx27]it should stop the kart at one of its borders, meaning before it and on it (not behind it)
[*:2c2spx27]the skin&model should reflect the direction better, like with some kind of barrier at the stopping end when it’s activated (in 3d, of course)
The only reason i would like a mod is so that we can make a video of the idea in motion so that notch can look at this and say that there is a definite need for this and implement this as soon as possible.
I've had this thought, and wish to submit it to someone who's thought about the topic of minecart systems more than I.
Gold Tracks. More use for gold. Perhaps they'd wear out, perhaps they'd make the cart move a bit slower, or some other drawback, but it would take a burden off of iron as a resource and add some use to gold, which is ironically rarer and worth not a damn thing.
I realize that gold is a very soft metal, so some thought into how to make it feasible (alloys perhaps, carts moving slower (as above) due to sinking into the metal, durability because of the soft metal, etc.)... but it would be a welcome addition in my book. If you think it a viable concept then feel free to add it into your system here - if Notch picks it up give me credit for that tidbit. ;D

Good idea about the idea of gold alloy. If it's made into normal tracks than yes i could see how it could be used as a break system. If you fuse it with iron however you could use it as a redstone enabled launcher system.
I've read in other threads that gold tracks would be used for boosters, though I like the red light tracks better. And with the number of suggestions asking for a use for gold, Notch is bound to make one eventually. So I wouldn't trash a good idea just to use up gold.

I once saw a chicken push a creeper off of a cliff. I never looked at chickens the same way ever again. That is of course until I needed feathers.
Your idea of a side booster just gave me a wonderful idea: how about a switch track that can redirect any cart on the main line to a track next to it?
A little picture of it: (with furnace being the cart and wood being the switch track)
When the switch is not powered, the cart moves strait. When it is powered, all carts moving over it in either direction (or even carts put directly on it) will move to the track adjacent to it.

This idea is beginning to get some recognition on get satisfaction hopefully people will comment on get satisfaction as well as this thread so that the people at mojang take more notice of this idea so that it could possibly be implemented in the near future.
I think this idea is awesome, and a lot better than current booster mechanics.
However, there are a few things that can be done with boosters which can't be done with the new blocks.
For example, the "Pez Dispenser" requires the cart stack to be on an empty tile, and therefore a boost block can't be placed under the cart stack. Solutions:
[*:2unxpqjy]Chests or other blocks as cart dispensers - similar to Minecart Mania
[*:2unxpqjy]Side or bottom booster blocks
Feature requests (can't be done with boosters either):
Cart type detectors (normal/storage/powered)
Use the same railway for different types of carts, while keeping separate stations for storage and people.
Storage carts - empty/full cart detection
Two different detectors: empty cart (no blocks) and full cart (all slots filled with at least one block).
This would allow for automated depos which route empty carts back to the mines, and full carts into storage.

Better dungeon loot, bones in dirt, Witch hut loot, ect

like this: deactivated→←activated
I like that. It would make operating Powered Minecarts easier.
You've no idea how much I'm begrudged by minecarts clumsily knocking each-other around the tracks and ditching the power-source.
