Combat could use some more dynamics. For people like me that enjoy hunting for cattle, pigs and sheep in game, I usually find myself having to fight my way back to my hovel at night. The addition of a blocking mechanic could bring alot more depth to combat more than "swing, step back, swing, swing, step back", it can save you from losing 3-5 hearts per monster, and you wouldn't be as scared to leave your base at night, provided you have the proper equipment.
Melee weapons could differ by speed and damage done. Let's use three base weapons, for instance - dagger, sword, and hammer.
A dagger would be the fastest melee weapon out of the three, but it would do the least damage. A good weapon for those starting out or those "sneaky" characters.
A sword would be the median weapon. Average damage and average speed. And the hammer/mace would be the best weapon against, say, skeletons, but it would be the slowest weapon, yet do the most damage overall.
There could also be variants of each weapon. A dagger could have a knife, which has upgraded damage and has the speed of the dagger but breaks more easily. A sword could have the claymore, which has an increased reach and damage, but it's slightly slower.
The hammer would have the mallet - less damage, yet more damage done than a sword - but the damage lost is absolved by a speed increase, and it will still have the skeleton-bashing quality it had from its hammer parent.
Ranged combat could also use a face lift. Gunpowder is a retrievable resource in the game, and you can build TNT packs, but why not firearms? (This may be a game, but the first firearms were being used circa 1400. The first batch of TNT was prepared in 1863.)
Two base types for firearms would be great for those that enjoy picking off enemies from their fortress parapet (rifle) or gunslingers with fast feet and fast fingers (pistols).
And what about hand grenades?
A simple fragmentation grenade would do more damage against enemies than TNT, but a shorter range and little-to-no block damage. (Say, only the block under where the grenade detonated would blow up, but surrounding blocks would be free from damage.) The grenade would have the projectile, gravity-affected qualities of the arrow but detonate about 1-2 seconds after hitting ground or an enemy.
And what about a left hand slot?
A left-hand slot could hold a shield or a torch/lantern.
And, finally - Armor. Just because you have diamond armor doesn't mean you're 100% better off than somebody with leather armor.
Depending on the type of material used, armor should keep the damage-mitigation qualities based on the rarity of the mineral, but a slight movement rate should be adjusted. Leather, being the most easy armor to obtain, would have the least damage mitigation but lose about 1% to 2% movement rate for every piece of armor equipped. Iron armor would have about 3%-5% movement loss for every armor piece, and so on. Diamond would suffer about 8%-9% movement loss for every armor piece. Of course, this could be difficult to implement and some (or many) of the community might resent this, but it could let up a bit on ganking or make the playing field a bit more fair so others have a chance to do a bit more damage before running.
Conclusion: I'm not 100% for the armor changes but I'm all for the weapons, explosives, and the blocking mechanic. Oh, and definitely left-hand slots.
It's like having one of those chinese carnival dragons and telling the guys at the back end to go make coffee, leaving the dragon to drag its ass around and mess up the carnival.
i'm with you on the hunting... i do enjoy trekking though the forest and laying a few arrows into an unsuspecting pig... i don't know about the blocking though... i kind of like having just a weapon and no shield... it makes it more interesting when you have to keep moving and fight on the run... as far as melee weapons the dagger and hammer don't really sound right to me... you would lose range with the dagger... i'm not sure if slightly increased speed and decreased damage would be worth losing the range of a sword which is basically the same weapon... i generally use just my sword when i'm fighting mobs... i practice a lot with the bow but rarely use it when i'm out intending to fight... i don't think a hammer would work too well... it being so slow and heavy might be a disadvantage when it comes to a large mob... i've been thinking lately that i'd like to have a spear... it would have the same speed but two or three times the range of a sword... it would be good for when you're out in the open and find yourself overrun... it would give you the extra range that you need to put a little distance between you and whatever you're fighting so you can maneuver into a better fighting position... if you're swinging it to get some space it would do half the damage of a sword... it could also be a projectile that can kill in one shot... but like an arrow you can't pick it back up if you hit your target... as far as firearms and grenades i have to disagree completely... yes you can craft tnt but it wasn't originally intended to be used to build cannons or landmines or as a weapon at all... notch implemented tnt for use in mining and players got creative... guns would take away from what makes survival fun... it would be easier to build a house and sit on the roof with a rifle picking off creepers... but then it wouldn't be minecraft... it would just be another game with guns... part of what makes this game so good is that you survive based on your ingenuity not firepower... your ideas for armor are pretty good but they would be really hard to implement... though i do like the way armor is set up now because it's based on the rarity of the materials... leather is the weakest because it's so readily available... there are so many cows that it's kind of annoying... diamond is infinitely rarer and tougher than leather so it's the best material for armor... the movement restrictions sound realistic but again they'd be hard to implement... and if they were i think they would work best in multiplayer where you can battle with other players... i don't think most survival players would want to be slower to have better protection

I second the call for more uses and considerations for combat. Even if this is minecraft (and not sparta :wink.gif:) and the main thing is building, I'd say some consideration to hunting or adventurous type needs to be made.
I'm nooot quite 100% on the hammer, sword, dagger thing. But the grenades (or a "stick" of tnt rather than a box of it) would be fine and dandy, AND the firearms. I was actually thinking of making a suggestion to get firearms flying myself.
Such as:

would give you a simple handgun or sorts and it could be loaded with specialized ammo made through this:

to make bullets which wouldn't be effected by gravity and have a range of about 30 blocks straight ahead and be faster. The gun would eventually run out though and need to be remade.
or you could make golden bullets the same way which would deal a lot more damage. Furthermore for those trigger happy melee artists, adding a sword to the gun to make a gunblade anyone? Melee power and firearm in one. Now THAT would be badass.
As for as weapon classes though, if you want to fly with it, let me help.
Swords aka daggers: Ranging from the wood to the diamond they have moderate damages and the same range they got now. Can be mounted onto the gun say to make a gunblade of the similar strength.
Spear: Length increased sword. Add a few sticks under the newly crafted sword of choice and you got a spear of the type. a Spear would have increased range, but less damage as it allows to you hit from further off.
The third class I think should actually be the axe. The axe could have actually been a two use thing, being a strong but shorter range attack and also for lumberjacking. But a hammer idea could possibly be the hard-ended alternative to attacking with an axe which would encumber the user by a small percentage like an armor, but a good bonk could put an enemies lights out in 2 or 3 hits. Cause a diamond sword takes 2 hits to kill most if not all. So a diamond mallet perhaps could be a bonker of choice dealing 1 shot ownage. The drawback being the slight range decrease or slowing of movement.
I'm all for more weapons, and a second hand slot (with a shield or something to put in it), but there should be A LOT more of the former. Including polearms. But it would be nice if we could make weapons entirely out of metal or stone. Like, metal pikes. Also, necessary for awesome warhammers.
Guns...eh. I'm not against them thematically, but they must be balanced. Crossbows, on the other hand....would be awesome. Bombs would be nice, but not a huge incentive.
Blocking would be good...
If armor has a speed penalty, it should have more variation- ie, chainmail.
I agree on everything except guns; this is minecraft, it's supposed to be about survival. Now when you put guns in, it'll just turn into another shooter about going on killing sprees. I heavily agree on the left-hand thing and spears, except spears should deal double the damage of an arrow, not a 1-shot kill. And I guess they should be retrievable. And yes, crossbow would be very useful. They should have more power than a bow, but fires slower.

spear as in throwing spear? or spear as in melee spear? and where's the one shot kill argument come from? I don't recall saying one-shot kill somewhere... and that mod somewhere about guns is quite balanced actually. cause you can't get the guns until fairly later game cause even the handgun needs about 16 pieces of steel in all and still you gotta dind sufficient gunpowder to make ammo.
there have been a lot of threads calling for firearms... and even though some of the posts have good ideas for small arms and uses for gunpowder they more than likely won't be implemented... most minecraft players are against guns in the game because it would take it too far from what it was intended to be and would make survival too easy... the way it is now makes survival interesting because you have to come up with inventive ways to safeguard yourself from attacks... part of the fun is to think of new uses for common items and ideas for traps and obstacles for the mobs to get through in order to get to you then share them with the rest of the community and see if anyone can improve on them... while some want firearms and more impressive weapons the final say comes down to notch... from the beginning he's said that he wouldn't put guns into minecraft because that's not the kind of game he wants to make... the good thing about minecraft being in alpha is that there are forums like this so players can give their input on things they'd like to see in the finished product... but suggestions for guns will fall on deaf ears because notch is simply against them... @darkmega in my first post above yours i mentioned that throwing a spear should kill in one hit... my thought on thrown spears killing in one shot is mainly based on them being so much bigger than an arrow... a four foot spear would have a lot more impact that a small arrow... one thrown spear would kill all mobs except creepers... creepers shouldn't be killed with one hit no matter what weapon you're using... with the exception of a tnt landmine or something like that... as far as throwing or melee spears i was thinking that they could be used as either... left clicking would be for melee and right clicking would throw it... kind of like how you can left click to swing a bow and right click to fire an arrow... i rather like the thought of crossbows... they could have twice the strength of a bow... then it would take half as many arrows to kill something... i was also thinking of something like exploding arrows... they wouldn't cause the damage of a block of tnt but if one were fired into a group of enemies the explosion would kill the one it hit and damage the ones around it... probably won't happen but it would be cool

You could add a shield mechanic with the sword, but also keep the sword in.
Such as.
[] []
The square is the shield, the other one is the sword. Thus Sword and Shield through crafting.
Every block takes a bit of durability, it requires more materials, but saves more health.
I believe the sword is the only thing compatible with a shield atm. You could say bow and arrow but... Holding a shield and shooting an arrow is a lot harder than some might think.

I figured I might as well build a giant cobblestone tower right next to your house. Because I wanted people to think your house looked crappy.

i'm not real big on the shield thing but i like the sword/shield crafting combo that you've got there... you could do the same thing with a bow and arrow but you couldn't have a full shield... you would have to have an archer's buckle but that would sort of defeat the purpose of the shield since it's only about the size of a dinner plate... can't really block much with that
