Well, this is by far the best idea I have ever seen anywhere. I think I want to make a game with this concept now. You, sir, get 2 Notchs and four diamonds.
The conflict/story-esque bit of it is definitely an entirely unique idea - or at the very least I've never heard of such a thing before. If you want to make a game with the idea, just let me work on it too since it's my idea :tongue.gif:

I'm honored by all the support :happy.gif: I really am just happy this many people bothered to read - so far it only seems like one person saw "magic", didn't read anything and made an asinine reply.

This could not be better than the OP said it himself. I FULLY support this idea and hope it's put into Minecraft ASAP. I don't even want any changes, what has been said is entirely perfect.
Please Notch, put this in Minecraft. I don't care if it takes a year to program, I don't care if you start making it in a year. JUST DO IT!
Seriously, I've been lurking in these forums for a while now, and I came out of my lurk just to say this is a brilliant idea. I don't know if Notch will put this in, but if he doesn't, some modder will. Its really good.

No, my profile picture isnt a cult symbol. Stop asking.
Now, now, I think this idea is decent, but too compilcated. Summonings might be decent, but I would like magic the way I said it in my thread. Very basic. I don't want very specific stuff to do, just simple, fun, magic.

On the other hand, I think your idea is decent, but too simple. Staffs and mana crystals may be all right, but I would like magic the way Hypevosa said it in his thread. Very modular. I don't want very limited stuff to do, just modular, fun magic.
(I did not copy your post and replace certain verbs and stuff with ones that describe this thread. Nope!)
Plus, yours is more... pew-pew magic. Your idea is like having a cannon block instead of redstone and TNT and that sort of stuff. See the difference?
no no no no nonononononononononono nooooooo-oo!!!
minecraft is pretty unique as it is, and adding magic to whats already in the game will just make it unoriginal and like too many other online games.

I've never seen anything like this implimented into any game... ever...
As of now the ritual aspect of placing blocks and redstone seems complicated, and don't just feel like they'd belong into Minecraft for reasons unknown. Then again I understand it's just in the idea phase so I'd expect it to benefit from some polishing/user feedback. The idea and amount of effort you put into typing the lore and descriptions of the elements are enormous and should be respected, but they seem a bit silly in the somewhat mechanic world of Minecraft IMO.
The rituals were in all honesty just running with a suggested idea - I just did the best I could with them to make sure they were balanced in terms of work/resources/effort/time and what they give in return. I did also really like the idea of slowly flooding the world in case you really wanted a water-world or rapture style of map but didn't just want to edit the whole thing in via MCEdit. I just added to it a few fun ideas (the dynamite, the great pumpkin) as well as some fun useful ideas (moon snare, light beacon), as well as some ideas that I really would enjoy for aesthetic/play purposes (snow, rain, amp, music). It's complex but the intent was to make them an endeavor worth the benefit.

Now what I like:
The tool enchanting and energy release systems sound cool. I'd personally like if you'd involve the energy release with papyrus instead of redstone, so that instead of throwing redstone you would be using up single use papyrus magic scrolls infused with the elements and redstone to cast projectiles, touch range spells or to cast spells on self like healing or invisibility from mobs. To make these scrolls you'd need something with the elements power like 1-3 lava buckets, then 3-5 redstone and one papyrus page in the middle of the crafting box (a separate magical or enchanted crafting box needed?). Also if the spell is seriously overpowered you'd need diamonds or obsidian to create the scroll, for instance teleport, invisibility, berserk and hellfire/blizzard sorta spells would seem quite easy getaway from tough situations and should be priced accordingly. Otherwise magic wouldn't be rare and cool anymore, instead it'd suffer a huge inflation and just seem meh.
Scrolls feel very cliche to me - one of the reasons I avoided the idea of scrolls or wands was because the intent was to be as original and close to minecraft in my methods as I could manage.
I don't mean to insinuate you didn't read, but you do seem to have missed a good bit. When you make a spell you sacrifice something and leave null matter behind. If you use the powerful spells you don't need to sacrifice diamonds because you sacrificed something worth as much or more. You are limited by your own will to destroy and how much you haven't already destroyed to just have a cone of fire emit from your hand. Sure, you could use the spells to defend yourself regularly, but you'd certainly have a dull and sucky looking world for that fact, and things don't get fixed overnight.

And tool enchants should wear out either with time, or per use, since Minecraft is about resources most things should be temporary, rare and valued, especially the most powerful spells.
You also seem to have missed the part where I say tools (which are only made of gold) have the same durability as gold items, but that durability can be increased by using pure essence, each pure essence doubling the items durability.

EDIT: Ooh ooh how about summonable items, ie. you could stack unstackables by making them into scrolls, for the spell you'd need the item and a sensible amount of valuable ore/something with the essence to create such a thing from thin air.
Seems a little too powerful to me - the potential to carry around dozens of potential pickaxes in only a single slot?... I don't quite feel like that's a good thing.
The "Gift of Life spell" I meant to have a chest (not the double chest) be one of the things you could give the gift of life and then the gift of sentience, and it would attempt to follow you wherever you went, running and jumping with you, etc. Hitting it once would get it to just act like a normal chest, and hitting it again would make it move with you again. This way the player still has to take care of it in essence and be weary of bad obstacles and creepers, but they still could get around with a little more than they normally could.

Already some rudimentary magic in minecraft.
The Nether portal can be seen as one of those rituals, Currently the nether has very little in it. Perhaps a majority of new ritual components can come from mob drops, ore finds and dungeon chests in the nether.
