Chest

Lockable Chest
Or
[]
When you make a chest like this and put it down, a window pops up. It says to enter a combination. 4 Digits.
You type it in, and click okay. You come back to the chest, and it says to insert the combination, or, if your the owner, it says that, or says change combination. Sound good?
The Lockable Doors would be the same way.
Door
Lockable Door
Still has the combination, and works the same exact way as the chest does.
How about we get a little classy and put a gold bar in the middle there and have it produce a key in your inventory simultaneously that's associated with that specific lock?
Gold has another use, and it actually costs a bit to lock up goods that are worth locking up :biggrin.gif:
Maybe have iron for combination locks.
Either way something more than cobblestone would be a good idea to me >_>

Lockable chests and doors are quite useful. And having another use for gold would be great. I don't know how far the lead time is for suggestion implementation however it should be obvious what the benefits of this suggestion is for a multiplayer environment. I'm sure it may already be worked on.. consider this a confirmation of what you most likely already know.

Well, the key would make part of what I wanted disappear, because with only one key, how is more than one person supposed to open it? You can tell the combination to a friend, or someone you wanna share the chest with, if you want. I guess you COULD dupe the key, but that's not okay on most servers. Lol.
There is a simple fix to this, craft the door or chest like normal, next create a key(s) and then use the key(s) on the chest or door making it linked to that chest or door so it can only be used with it and nothing else, this would allow you to make multiple keys for one chest or door
create a key(s) and then use the key(s) on the chest or door making it linked to that chest or door so it can only be used with it and nothing else, this would allow you to make multiple keys for one chest or door
Big problem there... Then anybody could make a set of keys themselves and then use it on any lock and then have their keys tied to that lock. Therefore, anybody can use that chest. The combination idea works better... But if you can make it so that you have to set a combination to a lock to protect it, and then when you tie keys to that lock, you would have to type the combo before your key can be set.

and make these items unbreakable?
Well... There could be a switch to delete or pick up the chest within one of the menus, and a combination would have to be typed in in order for the process to be completed. A double-lock algorithm is much better than just a simple key or a simple combination.

Ah yes that would be true if the chest or door wasn't linked, see I'm thinking about it in that if you link a set of keys to one thing that thing can only be opened and closed with those keys and the game sets an I'd or such to only the keys and the thing they are linked to, once set it couldn't be changed expect by replacing the locked object with one that hasn't been set to a key set. This makes it so that no one else can set it to a new key, not saying a combination lock is a bad idea, it's not bad at all, but do you really want to enter a combination code everytime you open a specific door or whenever you want to quickly grab something from a chest?
I think the OP idea is close to perfect (except that gold should be used instead of cobblestone) but I'd like one more thing on top of it: craftable keys. When you craft a key, somehow it should let you enter a string or combination to be permanently assigned to that key. Then the locking doors/chests could only be opened by a key item that has the same combination/string assigned to it as the door/chest. People wouldn't be able to make their own keys to open other people's stuff unless they know the combinations or strings that open them, since the keys require those combos to be entered manually. Then you just use the key on the door or chest to open it. And locks should be able to be added to both wooden and steel doors, too.
and this is what the key recipe would be

Now that sounds like a good solution, a combination of keys and combination locks that allows you to create more than one key and saves you from having to worry about someone somehow duping your key
i rellly relllly rellllllllly love the idea but one thing
wouldnt it be relly hard to do the coding for a key and a chest that match....
if there were a billion regulars on a server (example) then you would need a billion different keys and chest that match up
I like the idea of keys that use a unique ID string. I like it a lot. It would allow for locking a chest and maybe hiding segements of the ID in various locations... Would make a very nice quest mechanism where you'd have to gather the various segements of the ID and then craft a key with the total ID to open the chest. A good foundation for the generic fantasy quest.
It would be even more interesting of the key wouldn't have to be an actual key. If there was someway of imbuing any object with the unique ID...
This has given me an idea for a new block type: MacGuffin.
The MacGuffin block would be a craftable block that the player can be assigned new properties. The MacGuffin is prepared by first choosing a base block. This base block can be any Minecraft block that can be used in a craft recipe. The base block is used in the following craft recipe ( = Base Block):
The result is a block that is visually identical to any other block of its type, but will not stack with similar blocks in an inventory or chest. The block can then be used to craft any item as per normal. The resulting item will have the property that was assigned to the Macguffin.
I'm not sure how you'd assign the property, but I imagine it would require entering the data in a field in the crafting interface before you removed the Macguffin.
So an obvious use would be to imbue a diamond gem with a locked chests unique ID and then make a sword using the diamond Macguffin. The sword could then be used to open the chest.
This idea has some potentially far reaching ideas for how magic would work in Minecraft. I'm gonna have to think about that some more...

That's suggesting that there are millions+ on a SINGLE server, but there is two things about that:
1- if there is that many people, the odds that one person would have the key to one chest are highly unlikely, it would be 1/10000 of a chance they have the same exact key and that would mean every 1 person to 1 chest would have 1/ of a chance that it could actually happen between billions of players across what I would assume to be a very large world.
2- It's just like the real world with keys, some keys are exactly the same, the chance they are in the same place is too improbable to be a concern
Why can't we just keep the key lock simple and have one key be created when you make the chest that is automatically the only key to open that chest.
These chests are ultimately "private" and you or anyone who can kill you and take/find the key can open the chest. Or you can give them the key.
Combination chests can be more easily shared and you can tell someone the combo who has equal access.
This way your chests have different purposes:
Gold: It's mine and ONLY mine / only someone who finds the key gets the treasure / you want my treasure you have to kill me >:sad.gif: / etc.
Iron: This chest is for me and my buddy who delivers stuff back and forth so building goes faster / this chest is for everyone who builds on the team / etc.
Then normal chests are just temporary storage.

If there is going to be a lockable chest, then it must me for mulitplayer. In MP I find it a pain to find gold, let alone coal. I agree that gold should have more uses, but a lockable chest would only be useful in multiplayer.

the thing about making the key separately is that you can make more than one key for the same chest if you want to but you don't have to, so that eliminates the need for multiple kinds of chests.

Maybe using a piece of clay you could make a key imprint and then use gold bars to make copies of the key with a furnace. You just have the mold "wielded" and when you place gold bars and coal in the furnace it will make copies of the key.
I just want there to be that initial key so that there's no "assigning" process that would leave someone else able to just make a key and assign it to your chest.
I also think that a combination chest would also be nice for the situations I stated. You can't send someone a key over private chat - you can tell them a combination.

my idea would work over private chat too, since you enter a combo/string when making a key; just tell your friend the string over chat and he can make a key with it.

else, they should drop the items when broken, or else people will smash your chests and destroy everything
