Undeniably, one of the most embraced activities in Minecraft is to craft a permanent base, home, castle, tower, etc…, to call your own. People enjoy decorating their constructs, taking screenshots and showing off their epic creations.
I would like to suggest adding collectable items, or trophies.
The whole process could be under the heading...
~Treasure Hunting~
- "Relic Boxes” can spawn underground and or on the surface. - Mobs and Creatures have the chance drop rare items. - Achievements. This is kind of a secondary suggestion, but it would fit with this prestige, trophy idea.
Possible ways to obtain unique treasure: Relic boxes
But what would these boxes contain? Here are a few ideas. Crystal Skull: What does it do? Nothing, but its very rare and seeing one in someone’s throne room, trophy room, and secret chamber would indicate the presence of a great adventurer. Rune Stones: Carved blocks with glowing blue runic symbols. Collect em all! Books: Fill out that library room
Having rare collectable objects capable of spawning on the surface would also give adventurers more to quest for in addition to breath taking scenery.
Mob droops Creature Statues: A statue for every Creature and Mob. (Maybe 1/1000 drop rate when death results from sword or arrow damage)
Achievements
These have proven to be successful goal shaping features in many videogames. I understand that achievements would be a whole new ball of wax and a separate suggestion... but If you were able to receive some kind of displayable trophy for your efforts would go a long away to filling out that treasure room. Dig 10,000 cobblestone – Reward: Stone Heart Travel 1,000 squares from spawn – Reward: Adventures spy glass
Drawbacks:
Restricted by the intentional lack of story or lore to draw from. Books for example would have to just consist of vague titles.
Achievements can burn people out and provide too much structure for an open game such as this.
Well there you have it. It’s just an idea. Help me brainstorm by coming up with more unique relics/trophies, ways to get them or reasons why this is a bad idea.
Thanks!

Change is the only constant in this universe and unless you change with it, you will be left behind, sadly confused, wondering why life is so unfair.
This is an awesome idea. It would add a lot more... oomph to the game. I love exploring and I get giddy when I find dungeons in the game, so the idea of relic chests and monster drops makes me feel like a school girl.
More Relic Ideas: (Focusing on collections) Tarrot Cards - Work like paintings, there are 12 Gems of the Lost - 5 large gems of diffrent color with thier own stand. Painted Jars - 16 uniquly painted, clay jars to store in your treasure room.

SLIME PET TROPHIES
Kill 30 slimes with as much TNT as necessary: Demolitions slime. Placeable and retrievable pet slime wearing a set of goggles. Appears in inventory. Does not take fire or explosive damage.
Kill 20 slimes in 1 minute with a sword: Blader Slime. Placeable and retrievable pet slime wearing a helm. Appears in inventory. does not take weapons damage.
Kill 10 slimes in 30 seconds with arrows: Archer slime. Placeable and retrievable pet slime wearing a bandanna. Appears in inventory. Does not take fall damage. Extra jump height.
Kill 5 slimes in 10 seconds by punching them: Boxer slime. Placeable and retrievable pet slime wearing a headband. Appears in inventory. does not drown underwater.
King slime: Invincible pet slime. Golden crown wearing slime that can be placed and retrieved. Does not suffer fall damage, does not take weapons damage, does not catch fire, not succeptable to lava damage, does not down underwater, does not take explosives damage. Crafted from the four previous slimes. extra jump height.
Note that all pet slimes are non-agressive and will not fight enemy mobs. Stops hopping around and just looks at the player when within 1 block.
I've had similar ideas like this. It's a great thing because it gives players a motive to keep mining and exploring. I'm trying to come up with achievements......
-SSSSSSSSS! - Get damaged by a creeper's explosion fifty times
-Undead Slayer - Kill 100 zombies, 50 Skeletons, and 30 Creepers
-Spelunker - Uncover 5 different caverns while mining underground
So after messing with the World of Warcraft expansion and trying Archeology...
Giving player the optional goal of completing artifact and/or fossil collections is appealing to me.
Maybe someday, between my two jobs and insane girlfriend, I'll find the time to learn Java or what-not and implment this myself.
... some day.

I also have to agree with Ole'swifty. There needs to be some way for you to know where to go to find these relics.
Also, I would find it interesting to have some toggle-able features unlocked for getting a hard-to-get trophy. As an example, getting the "stone heart" would allow you to change the color of your bright red hearts to grey hearts, or basiclly, stone hearts.
And this is DEFINITELY the way to make players want to go out and explore. Not something like hang-gliders and things of the like.
Sounds good. I do like the ideas, and I hope Notch implements them.

Buying minecraft: $15
Climbing a mountain: 3 pixaxes
Jumping off the nearby cliff: 1/2 hearts remaining
The look on the creepers face as he falls and realizes that i beat him: Priceless.
Nice, succinct and analytical. Minecraft DOES need some rare loot to stock out dungeons and make mob drops slightly more interesting. But I'm on the fence on the specifics. As far as achievements go, they seem somewhat ancillary, maybe post-alpha.

Hell: When you're somewhere and stuff around you is on fire AND this is considered a natural feature of said environment, consider running away fast.
I love this idea, through I think the mobs should also drop their heads/skulls, rarely, the rest of the time they break. I suggested this idea for some dragon/hydra thread, but I also think that you can stuff the head and turn it into one of those moose-head trophies: = / / / / /
and you can hang it on your walls and proudly walk by. The creeper head would scare the living 's out of me whenever I walk through my hallways.
I really like your building achievements. There is a lot of room in that category.
You're welcome. To be honest, I was surprised to see no one else came up with that. After all, it's Minecraft. You gotta build something with the materials you mine.

EDIT: im not very good at math
Relics should only have a chance to spawn in caves and dungeons.
So you want to find treasure? you have to explore natural caves.
This could also add a little flavor if there are underwater caves, giving much more incentive to explore the depths.
I also have to agree with Ole'swifty. There needs to be some way for you to know where to go to find these relics.

"Just because you can doesn't mean you should."
Click here for an awsome game
"Glutton": Eat a lot of food, while at full health, maybe about 4 chest inventories worth of food.
"Thank Notch for Armor": survive damage that would have killed you in one hit using armor.
"Sharp and Shiny": Craft a diamond (or gold) sword (any warcraft fan will get the reference here)
"It Burns!": Like the stoneheart, but with netherstone.
"'Til Yer Blue in the face": Survive an insane amount of time underwater in one sitting, resets if you leave the water.
"Worthless pieces of *grumble grumble*": Die while wielding a wooden sword, wearing full leather armor.
"Divide by 0": Die from falling into the void.
