Portal Corruption Propose:Give portals more feeling that they taking you into some other dimension and you aren't the only thing that passes through. Explanation:The portal would not only have the current particles floating around and the sound effect. It would also show three stages:
First- It generate a fog(color purple?) that would act as water but wouldn't hindrance the movement of the player(thanks Whirlpoolwas), this means it would flow out of the portal.
(Image uploaded, hope you like it ^^)
Second- The dirt and cobblestone blocks around the portal within a radius of 5~10 blocks would turn into hell mud and red cobblestone respectively. Any other block wouldn't get corrupted and would stay the same.
Third-A red vine would grow on the Obsidian and the un-corrupted blocks(thanks zophah) this vine could b harvested for sticks and it must be destroyed before the block it has growth on. During this last stage Z-pigmen may appear, but in low numbers, and ghasts occurrences may increase.
EDIT: also if someone has a better name please say it, this name came out just because nether is the currently only dimension and it has the hellish-like atmosphere.
Maybe certain blocks prevent the "overgrowth" from the portal.
Like Stone blocks and higher grades can't be corrupted. The corruption starts off 1 block where the portal (main obsidian blocks) is touching, and it spreads one by one blocks every ingame day. It should have a limited vertical and horizontal spread of a 6x6x6 radius.
Maybe the portal can emmit a dark fog on the ground.
Like in Lego Universe (Sorry, only example I could find. :C)
yeah, This idea is totally to give the portals a more portal-ish feel, to make the idea that not only you cross it(and rarely ghast)
Maybe the fog could be made with a semi transparent water-like block, make the portal block spread down.
I dont think Notch is updating the Nether (portal counts in this category) anymore since it was for halloween.
That wouldn't stop me, or anyone in the forum, from suggesting things(people still suggest guns and futuristic stuff), the game is still in alpha and everything is still open to keep getting changes.
OT: water flowing near the portal would stop the corruption or make the fog dissapear.
This would be pretty awesome. The only downside to this is, if you were in Multiplayer, this would make it impossible to hide your portal.
However, with the "corruption-stopping" measures suggested, this is an amazing idea. Even if there was no way to stop it, it only means that people will have to take a bit more care in concealing their portals... Like, say, placing it in the middle of a sizable underground shrine.
As an addendum, though, it may just be easier (programming-wise) to change the appearance of the blocks, as is done with the grass and tree block textures in different biomes, rather than outright changing the block itself. As I've said many times before on this forum, though, I'm not a programmer, and have no idea if it would, in fact, be easier, or if changing the blocks is hard.

Sir, you may want to read the entire thread before lodging a complaint. If you had read, you'd have seen that "the whole world" would not, in fact, change, but rather, only blocks of a certain type within a 6-to-10 radius would change. If you'd still find issue with the fact that the buildings you've established within this radius would be "ruined," might I suggest that you either: A) Not build within this radius, :cool.gif: Not build your structures out of dirt and sand, or C) Not build the portal near your buildings.

Are you always so pessimistic?
Yes, yes I am. A pessimist is always either right, or pleasantly surprised.

Egads..this is World of Warcraft meets Battlefield 1942 in a dark alley with way too much to drink and no discarded mattress nearby.

I like this idea though I am curious what it might do to a tree(just for curiosity's sake). Also thinking about the summoning of zombie pigmen after a certain corruption level is reached that got me thinking about the mentionings of mobs making villages. Perhaps after the corruption has reached a certain point the pigmen will set up shop around the portal and be more aligned towards being friendly to the player. In single player this would actually kind of give the player the ability to found a village, and a way, in multiplayer, to have a rudimentary defense for the portal. Perhaps given time(and an increase in the corruption distance) the pigmen would further evolve their defenses. This could take many many Minecraft days.

The nether was planned before the Halloween update came into being as a method of fast travel.
That would be awesomesausage.

Not the whole world
that would ruin all of your work
Then don't build portals and whine about how hell is supposed to be filled with rainbows and bunny rabbits.

replace a block is as easy as dirt grows grass.

Slowsand to dirt?
Hmmm. I guess this is feasible, then.
