When minecraft is released,
It wont be long until a bunch of 10-year-olds buy this because I know how little kids love creating there' own things
(as proven in ROBLOX,Lego Universe, and Blockland)
So I dont think it would be a very good idea for a 10-year-old to join a server with 10 adults cussing like no tomorrow.
So,If this is added,I hope notch wont make it a total and hire stupid moderators who delete all posts for no ing reason (as demonstrated in ROBLOX)
other than that,
He should block out the MAJOR cuss words and leave the minor ones behind like "hell" and stuff.
If you're against this idea,
Im fine with it.
This is just a suggestion so little kids wont be walking around america cussing at everyone they see.
As usual,
Thanks for reading.
I hope notch wont make it a total ***** and hire stupid-ass moderators who delete all posts for no ****ing reason
I think you did that on purpose.
Except for the issue of not making the options menu too complicated (and this would probably be in a separate area, like profile options rather than game options), I'm fine with there being language filters on the client side-- that is, the swear word goes out intact, but when it appears it gets censored (replaced by asterisks or @#$%'s) on your screen only if you have profanity filtered. If you've ever played Kingdom of Loathing and noted the chat options for that game... well, yeah.
After that, it's up to the admins of servers to decide if they want to keep language clean, and the parents to make sure that their kids know how adults generally react to curse words.

I agree with this entirely. I don't think you should FORCE language filters on people. That sort of thing gets really annoying- especially when it interferes with normal typing. (In example, I have played games where it will censor anything with 'nig' in it, so saying goodnight of course has plenty of difficulties.)
World of Warcraft has a language filter, however as was suggested for Minecraft, the censor is client side and can be toggled in the preferences. Anything further is up to the admin's discretion.
Client side language filters, imo, are perfectly acceptable. It allows people to speak their mind, while at the same time giving the people who would rather avoid that type of speech the ability to do so.
Sorry about involving the cussing in my post,
And I posted that it should not be totally idiotic and over-proctetive.
And settings wheter you want language filters or not or child-proof servers are a good idea.

I am an adult and use language filters whenever they are available- I use procon's filter for firefox, as well as any language filter option that is ever presented for me to use such as the ones on starcraft 2...
I just don't like listening or hearing people cuss, and would honestly enjoy a language filter, as I won't allow any of my kids to play any online games where there is no language filter.

Look. I couldn't care less about stupid ass children. They're retarded little twats that ruin online experience from any decent player. Haha! My little brother always cries because the registration requires email and I won't let him use mine. So if he/her tries to use his email to register it should require parent email. And little kids are too ****ing stupid to just make another email and lie. And if they're smart enough to do it, it means they are smart enough to play without annoying the **** out of other players.

Nowai Bro. 10 year olds dont lasty 20 minutes in the blockland forums.
You are comparing a game owned, ran and updated by a single person compared to a shitty game owned by disney
And if you dont like swearing, you should force your ideals onto someone else.
When I see someone cussing/swearing, practically all the time, one of my first thoughts is "they sound like a twelve year old", while an occasional swearword isn't as annoying, hearing some of the more... colourful phrases I've seen, just makes them sound foolish/stupid and immature.
IMO, language filters are typically foolish. (At least one forum I know of filters (I'm not sure what word) to "fine gentleman", (a word which is filtered on another forum I visit.)) Sure you can "think of the children", but...
Given what I've observed about those who swear a lot, I have the feeling that its not because of just seeing the swearwords in an online game. (Those who know me know that I don't swear much -- so little that when I do, *particularly* online, it generates more of a response than someone who swears 50~2,000 times every day.
The point is, children (who swear a tonne), aren't just picking up the swearwords online... they're doing it in school, at home, and such. Likewise...
Swear filters need to be tuned for each language, so not just English, but French, Swedish, Spanish (which I gather has a *lot*), Japanese (have fun), Chinese (have fun), Korean (ditto), and pretty much every major or semi-major language.
Likewise, what's offensive in one language is not necessarily offensive in another. For example, in Japanese, its perfectly normal to see して (which appears in a lot of sentences), and its romanization? "shite", which most word filters for "****" catch. Thing is....
して, is the て-form of する (suru), "to do", and the て-form is used to conjugate a verb.
And likewise, how offensive the language is depends on the localle. Some language is more offensive in American English than in British English, or vice-versa.
As another example, on a UO server I used to play on, the operator got offended by the *shape* of the Tokuno region. Why? Because to him it looked like China, but had a *Japanese* name.
I won't even go into the religious offenses... beyond this: Some find certain symbols offensive, like upside-down crosses, etc....
While others may be offended by a rightside-up cross. The point is, what offends is hard to determine reliably outside of a small population.
On a server where the entire population speaks Japanese, it would be royally annoying (if Japanese text couldn't be input directly (not sure if it can or not, I've never tested.)) if every time someone said anything with して (shite) in it, the clients/server rendered it as #$%#e or ^&*^&.
(Especially if it ate the whole word... and replaced it with ****, then you couldn't tell if someone was asking you to do something, return something, break something, etc.
So, from me, I think its a "no", let the server ops determine what is and isn't acceptable, they can use the /kick command if it isn't. Or even the /ban command.
I agree that language should be controlled... but that is something shouldn't be forced by Notch. Adding parental settings (Lul) would be an option... but keep in mind you're asking Notch to filter out cuss words in servers when HUGE, HUGE companies like Blizzard for example don't force a filter. In-game options to toggle the stuff sure, but lets be fair, to be able to purchase the game to begin with you need to be of legal age.
At that age your old enough to know what vulgar language is. I don't want to come off as if I'm completely opposing you... that's what people do in nearly every thread in nearly any forum. I do agree though that if a child for some reason was on the game without a filter, they'd see things they don't have to... but the same with drawings that people make ;0. Good suggestion overall though, a server-based or client-side filter would be nice.. but obviously not a high priority xD

This.
Also, if you're kids are young enough that you're worrying about them getting exposed to swear words in an online server of a game, do you really think that game is the best place for that young child to be in the first place?
Really, it's up to the server admin. I don't mind the occasional swear, but when it gets to be constant, usually they are just saying repetitive cusses that don't even make sense. Mostly, I just don't like filters, because they almost always catch words that are perfectly harmless. One forum I know blocks the word "okapi" when the okapi is simply a harmless mammal related to the giraffe that lives in africa. Another forum blocks the word "cross," for no apparent reason (other religious symbols are fine), which makes giving directions nearly impossible.

Perhaps its not because of the religious reason? For example, take the phrase "You sir, seem quite cross", or "to cross one's fingers", or "Don't cross me", either one is a different meaning from the specific one. (I concur it makes no sense, but there probably was *some* reason behind it.)
