now that i think about it collecting 90 blocks of something to make a portal seems a bit ridiculous(Whether it be gold or glow-stone). Now I'm not saying i hate the glow stone idea, and I'm certainly not saying that it should be made of sand. but let's think about this for a second...you can actually farm and mold obsidian its not really that hard to get. once you find lava you can just make an infinite spring of it near an infinite spring of water and in five or ten minutes you can make a portal to the nether. And with four buckets ((Two lava, two water)) You have everything you need to set up an obsidian farm wherever you like. seems to me that how hard it is to collect or find isn't what matters ((granted it shouldn't be TOO easy)). But there has to be something we can use for the gate that isn't too easy to collect without needing to go to H-E-double hockey sticks and mine glowing rocks from the ceiling over lakes of magma while ghasts shoot fireballs at you. are there any more ideas? seriously anyone?
I haven't bothered to vote, as I don't think my opinion is in the list.
I think the Nether was a waste of time, and Notch was only doing it as a proof-of-concept anyway.
It added very little to the game, and he's going to find it hard to justify it's existence over the next couple of months of updates.
I see nothing to suggest the Aether won't also be the same, and I'd hate to see even more coding time wasted, when there's so many gameplay improvements that could be made to the main game.

it is a SANDBOX GAME! What is the point of ANYTHING in a sandbox game!?
In sandbox games, you need a steady flow of new stuff to do, or else you would get bored.

Aether is cool, but it would be awesome if the galestone appeared on the bottom of the floating islands, blowing down. Would make it more difficult to mine AND would make sense :smile.gif:
2 ploblems; A) Landmasses that float without support are a perfectly normal occurence (if uncommon to have naturally generated) so there's no reason to NEED an explanation for the Aether land masses being able to float, and :cool.gif: It would also make it either completely impossible to mine, or absolutely no danger of its own to the player. I'd rather see it on the sides of cliff faces, to blow the player where they'll fall down enough blocks to take damage.

would like to see that float sand implemented Cause if That float sand Could... Move and keep the stuff ontop of it On it WE could make blastdoors outta obsidian with it. if it would react to redstone And allowed stuff ontop of it to move with it but I like the idea
It doesn't. Floatsand/hoverglass only moves itself, and if it comes into contact with other blocks, it will be stopped.

Your reasoning is sound, but your facts are incorrect. Lava doesn't make infinite springs the way water does. Lava Spring blocks can leave residue, but none of that residue can be picked up with a bucket or turned into obsidian(only cobblestone) but you'll sill only be able to get the same number of lava spring blocks out of it that you put into it(less if you accidentally tried to dump a lava spring block into a spot that already was occupied by a lava spring block)
If it is possible to get lava to regenerate, it through a glitch, and either has been or could easily be removed in the future.

The Nether, as originally implemented, only had 3 new blocks, none of which had any significant features that couldn't already be simulated to some extent by those that already existed in the Overworld (wood/log blocks can already glitch to burn endlessly like netherrack, glowstone can work underwater, but it's also possible to put a lava spring block down with glass around it, and soul sand just really has very limited practical applications anyway.
Compare that to the Aether, that has 6+ blocks to be implemented, ALL of which possess specific features that can be used to accomplish things that are COMPLETELY impossible right now.
I respect your reservations, but I'm still left with the impression that all the information you are basing your opinion on is the name and the idea that it's an "anti-nether" realm. You really should read more.
On the Notch livestream a few minutes ago, someone asked "Will you implement the Aether and other dimensions?"
Notch said something like "Yeah, that would be cool, a few more dimensions are good"
There should be like floating octopuses(jellyfish concept on gahsts) and some other passive mobs, possibly turtles?
and you can harvest a litle gold blocks on the surface(extreamly rare) and some speacial stone called dark stone, which blocks aggreasive mobs spawning.

This seems like a good idea, but I'm not entirely sure about the "Anti-Nether" concept- For one thing, it really strikes me as a "heaven and hell" kind of thing which I know Notch was trying to avoid.
Secondly, the Nether has been occasionally referred to as the Nexus, which seems to indicate that it would be a central hub from which to visit other dimensions, similar to the Overworld but with different terrain algorithms and possibly different ores and mobs. I like this idea a lot more as it doesn't limit us to only 3 worlds.
(Also, random idea, dunno how possible it is- could a world be generated where the algorithms for the terrain are actually generated procedurally? It would open up a lot of possibilities.)

I hope Notch adds this to Minecraft! All of you that are posting on this particular forum topic have wonderful ideas, and I think that some (most) of the them should definitely be added. I love the whole idea about having 3 different worlds altogether, each correspondingly different than the other and all in a nice contrast. Heaven, Hell, and Earth, that basically should sum it up. I love the idea of using a bright and golden portal to get to the Aether, since it is in contrast to the dark and purple portal used in gaining access to the Nether. One thing though - Notch, when you said that you didn't want another world like the Nether because the Nether wasn't too interesting, take this into consideration: you could not only add the Aether, but improve the nether as it stands also, like for instance I love the idea with the Darkwood acting as "Nether Trees". Also, am I the only one you thinks that there should be more mobs in the Nether? For example:
Sprites (Fire Creepers) - demonic looking (horns, red skin, tail, etc.) hostile mob about the same size as a creeper. They would make a sound that would be sort of a cross between a zombie and a spider, kind of like a hiss with a little growl. They would act as "fire creepers"; in other words when they attack you they will try to touch you by getting as close to you as possible and then they will basically burst into flames and kill themselves (much like a creeper does when they explode), resulting in not only lighting you on fire (same effect as if you were to touch lava and catch on fire), but also engulfing the surrounding area in flames. Because Netherrack (the abundant block that is found almost everywhere in the Nether) is flammable, this could very well spell doom for you and you surroundings. This would also make them unharmed by lava and fire (except for when they burst into fire themselves). To balance this off however, Sprites have a low chance of spawning and only spawn next to lava. They also have little health and are relatively slow so that they are easy to pick off with a bow from affar. Since water is normally unavailable in the Nether, it shouldn't be relied on to kill them, but CAN be used to do so anyways (using inventory hacking or something). When killed, they drop flint (still kind of unsure, so I would love to here new ideas). Overall they would be about as dangerous as a creeper for two factors:
1. Due to their slow movement speed, low health, and the fact that they have to touch you before they can burst into flames, they can be killed easily (even with a melee weapon, in which you would need to attack them in the split second that they are within melee distance but not touching distance).
2. Due to their low spawn rate and that they must spawn in the vicinity of lava, avoiding them altogether is also fairly easy, since as long as you keep enough distance away from lava, you shouldn't run into them.
However, they are still a challenge to fight because they wield a powerful weapon and must killed quickly to insure survival.
So far this is my only mob idea but I'm working on new ideas at the moment. My whole point here is to explain that with the addition of the Aether there should be an improvement to the Nether, since although it was in the right direction is it fairly boring, which is what an improvement will fix! Please feel free to comment back in relation to my post, and also don't be afraid to add to my ideas and such. Thankyou Notch, thankyou forums, thankyou people on the forums with you amazing ideas, and thankyou MINECRAFT!!!
No, Moss Stone is PLANNED for the future to be able to be made from Cobblestone, most likely from having another Moss Stone next to it. Doesn't mean it's available now. And personally, it's hard as hell to find a dungeon. It's not hard to find lava or water to make a portal to the nether with, nd once you get there, it's not hard to find Glowstone.
For all these people who are going "why should you have to go to the Nether first? just use XYZ block that is harder to FIND instead." Invariably it's things like Marble, that doesn't exist yet, Gold, that while it's easy to find 5 or 6 but a LOT harder to find 90 that you would need to craft JUST ONE portal, or Moss Stone, that requires you to find a dungeon (which is an even worse pain in the ass than finding the 90 gold) The response I have is this;
The objective of Glowstone for the portal is to create staging. Yes, STAGING. This is not taboo in a sandbox game, and certainly not Minecraft, that requires you to make a wooden pickxe to mine stone, a stone pickaxe to mine iron, and an iron pickaxe to mine diamond. Those are all STAGING. Provided you put your nose down and don't **** around, you can likely have a diamond pickaxe within the first 15 minutes to half an hour of playing. From here, it would likely take another 15 minutes to half an hour to craft a bucket, get some water, find a pool of lava and turn it to obsidian before mining it with said pickaxe.(yes, you could use buckets and make forms, but that actually takes longer unless you decide to craft 5 or 10 buckets, or unless you're okay placing the portal right next to where you found the pool of lava) Once in the Nether, it is not difficult AT ALL to locate the glowstone clusters scattered about the nether. It will likely take another hour or so (depending on how well prepared you are, and whether you have your difficulty set to anything other than peaceful or not) to get to them and mine the 90 pieces of glowstone dust that you need (this task could become easier if glowstone is made to drop more than 1 dust and/or if glowstone sand is implemented)
that same amount of time would almost CERTAINLY require anywhere from twice as long to multiple DAYS worth of mining to find the gold or mossy cobblestone that would be needed.
Accept the Staging, it actually makes it EASIER for players to get to the Aether because it provides a clear route for getting there. Anything else is "wander around and hope you find this random block" and if you really hate the Nether that bad, turn your difficulty down to peaceful when you go there.
With the Implementation of Lapus Lazuli. I could almost see that as being the block of choice, but it still runs into the same issue that you're wandering around HOPING to stumble onto it, instead of knowing exactly where you need to go and what you need to do.
That is a crappy arguement for saying that it is taging. STAGING can happen even if you don't have have to go to the nether. Staging can also happen by putting a large resource restrain on going to said area as well.
On top of that, just since lightstone comes in large viens and is visible does not makie it any EASIER to gather. Infact, gathering Lightstone on anything other then peacefull makes gathering it a ***** due to Ghasts. Glowstone is always in the ceiling or walls and is almost always over LAVA. Badly made platforms + ghasts fireballs costs you most of the glowstone.
90 gold is not that hard to find. On a 50MB world, I got a large chest and a half of gold blocks (have been playing that world for about 2-3 months).
YOu call gold so darn rare when it is not if you are digging at the correct layers or even bother to mine it (I know friends who just don't mine gold due to it having no use). Just to get an average on gold on a freshly made world, I get about 6000 gold ore. That is DOUBLE to TRIPLE the diamond needed to mind obsidian. Notch most likely didn't intend dirt Molding obsidian to get to the nether. HE most likely intended you go find diamond to mine obsidian, which takes way more then 15 minutes unless you are lucky. Those same 20 maps I got the average for gold, also only produced an average of 2000 diamond ore.
So tsaying that "oh it's for staging!" is freaken weak since there is more then one way to have players go to areas or guide them then just forcing them to go from one world to the next.
diamond may be rarer, but it's more densely concentrated in a specific area so it's generally easier to find than gold. And it's pretty obvious that while notch might not have specifically intended for people to make molds to get their nether portals, it is pretty obvious that he was open for other methods, simply because he has the portal being BUILT instead of being crafted. Either way, the portal can still be built as soon as you get 3 iron. As for gathering the lightstone, just take a couple layers of cobblestone and use it to form the platform and guard the glowstone, cobblestone is one of the cheapest materials out there and ghasts can't destroy it. Tower or bridge out under the glowstone cluster, spiral a platform out below the glowstone cluster so that it will always get caught when it breaks, and if you see a ghasts just put up a wall(or for that matter, if you have the platform under the glowstone, just let the ghasts break it for you.
Someone already modded a kind of alternate to the Nether here: http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=171134
And yes, it does work with the Nether. You can enter a normal world, the Nether, and that world. I'm not sure if you can make a portal to there in the Nether though...
It's an ice world. Perhaps something similiar for the nether can be made? Hmm... It's not a problem of making them look like heaven and hell. The nether is an alternate underground world, and the aether can be an alternate sky world. (Key word: alternate. Both worlds are equally tall, and making a portal higher will usually lead you to a higher place, and the same goes for building lower. The Nether is NOT under the normal world, it just likes putting you in caves upon making a way out.)
Minecrafters seem to like floating landmasses anyway, just look at the popularity of the 'skylands' map.
