I dislike this poll, as it has nothing close to my personal opinion on the subject:
"It's a cool idea but I don't really care if it never gets higher than "mod" status."
In the end I went with the "joke" option because it was the closest thing to "other." Seriously, the options in there are biased to assume that if you like the mod, you want notch to add it to the game.
EDIT: related.

Yeah, but he plan ro add ALOT more to the nerther.
I just want to mention that I like how the portal blocks look like they're actually made from the light of the lightstone. For such an awkward color scheme, it looks great.
I have an Idea for another two blocks for the Aether:
Herrock
Characteristics:
Stone / Sand
When alone, it acts like sand, and follows gravity. However, when it comes in contact with another block of it's kind, it becomes like stone, and can float in mid-air.
Location:
Along the ceilings of most Aether caves, also on the very bottom of floating islands.
Mining:
Fists will give 1 block of Hesrock (not a typo, continue down) with the same speed as a wood shovel through dirt. Any tool will break with two hits, but not mine it for it is too feathery. It is about as rare as iron ore in the normal world.
Features:
As said before, when a block of Herrock dropped by means of mining out from under it, it will fall just as a piece of sand. When two or more are placed together, they will cling together like rock and no longer follow gravity. There is no need for an anchor to hold them down, and they will suspend in mid-air just as any other rock.If two are falling and they come in contact mid-air, they will become stationary when they hit the ground.
It also gives off light level 11 and illuminates most caves that are in the Aether. Trees can not be grown on it until it is mined and turned into Hesrock.
Building:
It isn't place-able, as once it's mined it becomes Hesrock, and changing it back is impossible. However, mining into it and making a house-cave is possible, if you can find enough.
Hesrock
Characteristics:
Stone / Sand
When alone, it acts like sand, and follows gravity. However, when it comes in contact with another block of it's kind, it becomes like stone, and can float in mid-air.
Location:
The result of mining Herrock.
Destroying:
Any tool, including fists, will give off one block of Hesrock when destroyed. Destroyed with two hits from any tool. Three hits with fist.
Features:
As said before, when a block of Hesrock is dropped alone, it will fall just as a piece of sand. When two or more are placed together, they will cling together like rock and no longer follow gravity. There is no need for an anchor to hold them down, and they will suspend in mid-air just as any other rock. If two are falling and they come in contact mid-air, they will become stationary when they hit the ground.
It gives off light level 9 when placed, and saplings can grow on it with no extra light source, the Hesrock giving them the perfect amount of light to grow. The saplings will grow the same way as if they were in normal soil.
Building:
Although easily broken, it makes a pleasing house that no bad MOBs will spawn in, because of the light. it would also work well for pathways and for tree-farms. Because of it's commonness, it may work as a replacement for torches in some areas.
In the mining way, I got my inspiration from Stone, can you see?

while I get the joke, and I know the grammar is wrong, you have to learn to get it go, an unchanging language is a dead language, I've learned alot about this from my history class.
Also, no it wouldn't. Ghasts cause damage. Zephyrs don't. The only one who COULD win is the Ghast.
Not true. The Zephyr could blow the Ghast's bombs back at it. Everything else is correct though. Ghasts aren't going to appear in the Aether, and Aether mobs aren't going to appear in the Nether.
But ghasts rarely spawn in the overworld (yes, it happened to me ONCE) near nether portals. It's super rare, equal th the legendary spider jokey. If Zephyrs would spawn by Aether portals, then ghasts and zephyrs COULD get into a fight. You would just have around a 1/1 millionth chance.
Edit: Also you can make an Aether portal in the Nether. You can hack Water spring blocks and they stay in your inventory and are placeable in the Nether. That means you could make it. It would need to be fixed that you can't do that though.
An arguement for Marble (even though we already have a few useless blocks like sandstone, mossy cobblestone, and mostly gravel).
Notch could add decrotive items made from marble (and use the damage property to make what the statue would look like, like how wool only uses one block id + a damage ID for the colors). Place three marble blocks on the crafting table verticlely to get a statue figure. Place the statue figure in any place (at least three blocks High) and the statue would be of a random mob other then ghasts. And, if we ever get around to it, marble can be used in derotive tables + chairs.
Finely Grounded marble was once used as a part of making paper. As well as being used in plastics and paint. Marble that has been grounded up and have been applied to high heat is used in cement.
I dunno, I kinda imagine them looking like the guardians in halo
pic:
what I am talking about is in the background, it almost seems like it would fit, albeit would need a bit of recolor magic
it even fits the description, guards, shoots lasers that hurt (real bad) and is just in general a tough foe.
although tripmine spam cannot save you now...
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
...Well it looks good on paper.

When you are "killed by the guardians", it just means you were killed by something other than falling or another player. This can even occur if someone shoots a rocket at you and then leaves the game before it hits you.
Hey guys sorry if anyone has already suggested this but i have an idea for a portal to the aether! It would be made of gold..basically just a gold version of a nether portal with maybe water instead of fire like...
((Basically you place a source block of water near the top and it fills the gate...)) ((...forming a portal)) but with gold blocks instead of bars. I believe this is good for two reasons. One: the amount of gold needed would make it kind of hard to get there ((which is good especially if you want to have awesome floating blocks and rare materials there)) And Two: because it would make gold proportionately useful compared to how hard it is to find. I was also thinking of making it so that the portal would have to be a certain distance up in the air ((level 200-250 maybe)) to work since it is supposed to be an upper plane and just to add a little more difficulty in getting there. Another idea might be an alternative to the flint and steel like a diamond and gold

which could make blue flames or small flashes of light. Also since the subject of mobs there has come up. It might be interesting to make monsters there that attack you to protect important sites ((temples relics etc...)) or that are destroyed by shadows, since its a higher realm there shouldn't be evil monsters running around but if you think about it you (As a human of the earth, a lower realm) don't really belong up there so it would make sense for certain mobs to be hostile. Of course they would have to be "Pretty" like guardian statues or cherubs or something maybe even something like an anti ghast: About the size of a ghast with little angel wings that sings in a calming voice when it shoots at you like what geckorus10 wrote about the painful lasers. XD it would be like an angelic chorus right before you get incinerated by holy fire! ((Below is a representation of what it might be like if one of these higher beings fought a skeleton)) (The highest being i could think of)
