Probably going to end up saying something that was said already but:
I think the aether would be a good way of adding more combat scenerios (similar to how the nether adds its own), and would be an interesting place to build, explore, and loot the unique treasures contained within.
Just like exploring dungeons as a group is a fun activity in mulit-player so would going into an aether gate (or nether gate for that matter).
unimaginably cool. all i want to do now is make my first trip in a long time into the nether and get some materials ready for when aether hits. everything i read/saw looks ideal for this new biome. love it all...one question, you jump into a horizontal portal like a swimming pool? or build stairs up to it or both?
one suggestion, add some sort of new loot from the temples, like personal wings/winged shoes or a flute that will calm and sedate creatures.
OMG!
type-stone
name-solstone/sunstone
extremely rare, only found deep inside the largest of the floating islands.
properties:
in raw form, any mob within 5 blocks of it will immediatly catch fire without armor (due to heat) when mined, gives a drop of 9 fairydust, which can be used to craft sol runes (decorative), sol armor, suntorches, and, when smelted, a single block of solstone. gives off a light level of 10/20. It is actually a piece of sun. (NOTE- when surrounded by obsidian and lit on fire, it generates a confusion aura or something) no picture is available, but it looks like a white-hot gold block :smile.gif:
Fire does not exist in The Aether. It's just not done.
how about instead of banning fire in the aether just switch its polarity, so it heals slowly instead of damaging, and doesnt spread instead of spreading, and glows green instead of red. you still shouldnt be able to light nether portals though.
It's harder to do all that than it is to just make fire never exist in the Aether.
go into code, lower damage and add a - to it, delete spreading code, copy over to new block id, change texture to a green one, change flint and steel to spawn this in the aether, disable n-portals opening in aether, done. would take notch all of a hour at most.

Making a new block is harder than changing the biome data (I assume it's done this way) to simply disallow a fire block from being placed.
Just wondering how this mod is going. I really want this stuff to happen, although I cannot really do anything myself.
I was just wondering if anything new is happening, and also wanted to make a few suggestions.
This topic: ( viewtopic.php?f=25&t=104266 ) seems to have a good and nearly developed world gen code, and does appear to be dead. If you can, I would suggest you get into contact with this guy. From what I can see, he is ( or was ) better at the world generation than the artistic portion. You guys seem to have a great and creative collective, and already have some great stuff.
Also, I was just wondering if we may be able to get something of a demonstration video, just to renew the faith in this mod. It would help get up a good following, allow others to advise in whatever areas you may have problems.
But looking at the other stuff in the game, Notch atleast has a simple physics engine. If he coded it well he could likely do that.
Though knowing that it's possible to jump 2 block gaps currently (difficult but possible), that would really only expand the jump range to 4 blocks maximum, or 3 average. And the Aether Islands are, I assume, going to be much farther apart than that.
gravity changes are one of those things I felt would be better to save for potential use in a Moon realm, in which something like that would be particularly fitting and also help that realm stay unique when compared to both the Nether, Aether, and Overworld.
It COULD be something for the Aether to implement, but the Aether already has plenty of other things to help it stand out.
Wow, this is a good idea. Would be cool if inside every floating island there is a block if you hit it sends the island down to the main world. Just saying.

GENERATION 37: The first time you see this, copy it into your sig on any forum and add 1 to the generation. Social experiment.

The sky is falling! That kind of falling islands would be very bad, unless you were absolutely certain about what you are doing. Not to mention the trouble with coding all that.
On topic:
I like the concept of the Aether, and I do believe there should be an alternative to the Nether, no matter if it's a 'world of light' or a 'world of true darkness'. Because, the Nether only 'looks' dark, and it's actually a lot brighter than the normal world, except for the sun. I don't like, however, all the new 'block types' and 'mobs' and all. The Nether is simple yet still rocks. If Aether does get implemented, it should be a lot simplier. You're basically asking Notch to make an entire expansion-pack's worth of content as it currently stands. If done correctly, even a simple Aether would work fine.

Actually, I don't think Notch thinks of the Nether as "simple." At least, that's not how Notch described it in the quote on the front page. There is a few threads out there that are working on fixing how "simple" the Nether is, one is in my signature, and that thread has links to others that are out there.

Never said it would be hard.
