@sabata: Well, Notch has the final decision on stuff, so marble could be in. Besides, it does fit in, so there's not that much of a problem with it (how does it not add anything?).

Yeah, I'm just not really interested in adding what is effectively a purely aesthetic block when there's something already in game that will work fine. I was also planning on having mossy cobblestone for the temples, to draw the parallel of them being the dungeons of the Aether. In your example, you're essentially suggesting adding not just 1 block, but 3, and you're suggesting using lava to change chalk into marble instead of the standard minecraft method of simply smelting in a furnace.
I'd look for his quote saying there's too many blocks already, but here's his reasoning (for one version of marble).
Put simply, Marble is not going to be taken seriously in this thread.
It's not that it's going to be dismissed out of hand, and if it was included by notch within the overworld itself, it would certainly warrant consideration, but the point is that this thread isn't going to add Marble to the overworld just for the purpose of making a portal to the Aether.
Marble doesn't DO anything besides being a white stone. Hell, I'd be more likely to have Lapus Lazuli blocks as the portal to the Aether since it at least has been included by Notch already.
This is pretty cool, but I honestly would rather have most of the same features as just regular blocks, instead of in this context (wind blowing ones, mimic blocks, etc. being crafted instead).
At the very least, some of these should be redstone controlled, even if from the aether, otherwise they would be WAY less useful.

Przerwap, upon looking at some code I had just written: "...Gav... That's not how programming works."
I dont like the fact that you have to teliport but i gues so I want this! Wish these could be in the normal world i mean you can just fly to rare aether placed to find the mobs and materials.
Slight problem...What if you fall when above an area denoted by clouds? You would be falling outside of the map.
Same thing would happen as when you move outside the known map in the Nether and make a portal. You come out in a completely new section of map. Have fun getting home, laddie.
I made a post not to long ago about a flying pig mount and you have it only cooler so I looked at this YOU ARE A MINECRAFT GOD SIR NOTCH FOR THE LOVE OF GOD WE NEED THIS!!!
I wish I could vote more times so I could promote this more times because without this in MC I can no longer play MC until we get this it will happen I'm sure!

I thought Notch made portals unusable if you would leave the "infinite" map area? As a random sidenote, I also came up with another easy possibility for what would happen if you fell outside the map area... YOU WOULD DIE.

If missing a deadline makes you a bad person, then Notch must be Satan himself.

Pretty much not at all. If you travel far enough through the nether and then create a portal back to the overworld, you'll just end up with the overworld generating new content as if you had traveled out that far by foot, and then putting you down where the portal would form. There's no reason for the Aether not to do this as well. Except now you wont even know beforehand whether there's any water below you or not.

+I dislike the zephyr because it simply doesn't seem to mix in with the typical Minecraft mobs much at all.
+Another idea for the sentries would be some bird human mix (i don't have an idea for the name) that wields a spear and is very agile.
+That dragon idea is brilliant!
+A rename for the Moa could be nice. Maybe to add some more enemies to the Nether, the Cockatrike could be made into a fiery color and be put into the Nether.
+The aether rock would then seem like more of a mind trick, and that would make Minecrafting just downright tedious. It's mainly that I don't like the idea of it being invisible.
+The second reason for the floatsand being "float"sand would so that people that just enter the Aether can have a way from island to island, however tedious, without making some silly bridge.
+Ok, ok, the lots of temples idea was pretty crazy. But not that rare. More like 1 temple every 6th or 8th island.
+That is true. Maybe make water move twice as fast in the Aether, somewhat like how lava moves in the Nether (or i think it does).
+That would be a great idea. Also make it so that marble is just as hard to mine as Obsidian, and possibly around levels 16-48.

This doesn't make any sense. It basically hovers around like the Ghast, and then attacks like a skeleton, except with "invisible snowballs" wind that knocks you around without hurting you.

We already have a bird pig mix so I'm not really interested in a bird human/bird pigman mix. I'm not opposed to the dragons, but they're still a little cliche, so it's sorta like Marble; if Notch adds it to the Overworld/Nether, then I'd definitely be behind Firehazurd's Chinese Dragon being added to the Aether, though possibly with different coloration and pattern.
+The aether rock would then seem like more of a mind trick, and that would make Minecrafting just downright tedious. It's mainly that I don't like the idea of it being invisible.
It's NOT invisible. It mimics the block it's next to, and there are plenty of ways to find it.
+The second reason for the floatsand being "float"sand would so that people that just enter the Aether can have a way from island to island, however tedious, without making some silly bridge.
Already plenty of ways between islands. Cold cloud forms natural but dangerous bridges, Quicksoil and Galestone/Flowvein allow for longer jumps, and floatsand may even be rideable after you hit it, so use it that way.

rarity of a temple shouldn't be any higher than a dungeon is on the overworld.

SMP used to not be able to support enemy mobs either. So what?

repeat of the ignored important question. is it feasible?
Well once everything goes server side I would presume yes.
At the very least, some of these should be redstone controlled, even if from the aether, otherwise they would be WAY less useful.
