against a sponge the blue looks nice, but when I tried out how it looked against the actual glowstone block, it looked even worse than the yellow.
Don't know if this was suggested already, but maybe the portal could be made out of iron blocks? it's a bit expensive (90 iron ingots at least), but it would look cool:
glass may also work too, but that may be too cheap.
The point of using glowstone was so that the Nether was a requirement for going to the Aether.
There was a mod that came out that incorporated a different lighting system that makes moving lightsources both possible and pleasant.
It wasn't a different lighting system. It identified which block the player was standing on (already used for jumping and placing a block on the ground), and made that block act like it had a torch on top of it.

One of the biggest and and hardest to address quirks of minecraft is the lack of goals. Don't get me wrong, that lack of game driven goals is a major part of what makes the game fun, but this would provide stages of advancement for a player without adding story, and thus retaining the emergent gameplay that is such a fundamental part of the minecraft experience.
Games without goals quickly get boring. Minecraft HAS goals. The thing that makes it different is that the goals aren't made by game-based restrictions, but by physical barriers, like the real world. One goal is to not die much. So the player has a goal to make someplace safe. He crafts torches in his hobbit hole. Then you want better tools, so you find cobblestone, then iron, then gold, find out gold isn't that great, and then get diamond and obsidian stuff.
But these teirs aren't the only goals. Minecraft is special because a lot of the goals are made BY the player. "I want to build a great glass pyramid" "I want to build a cannon that fires mobs" "I want to build a tower from the bedrock to the top of the map!"
This means more tools and stuff, so the player gets mining. But his tools break, so he needs to craft more. Through a surprisingly simple cycle that somehow avoids the feeling of "grinding" in most games, the player's goals are realized, and he realizes, he wants MORE. Enough is not enough. He won't stop until he builds a boat that fires creepers, dispensers that fire in such a way that it makes a wall look like the mona lisa, he has a building that regularly rains cactus, peaceful and hostile mob items down into his base. and until he's so confident, he takes walks out at night to hunt creepers, even though he needs no more TNT.
These goals the player makes up, and are way more interesting than killing 39 more people so that you can level up and finally buy the spell the wizard-tutor teaches you to do more damage.
The progression helps prevent complex ideas from leaking into earlier stages, like you said. But there is also a surprising amount of simplicity already. Not many of these blocks are any more complex (Player-end at least) than gravel or dispensers.
I sometimes wonder if some of the people here are actually Notch in disguise just testing out new ideas to get community feedback. And if not why isn't Notch recruiting these creative geniuses into his fold? The Aether is the best and most well conceived BIG idea I've ever heard of for Minecraft. It seems so natural an addition that I'd be suprised if Notch hadn't already had plans for something like it all along.

I'm speechless. This should be put somewhere on the official site. This is so awesome, that to -snip- it would be a crime.
On the topic of the idea: Tl;DR (no, I'm kidding.)
This is one of the best and most thought out (most well thought out?) Ideas I've ever read on this forum. Even the OP's other ideas pale by comparison, though they are still significantly better than most ideas on these forums. I was particularly impressed by the the contrast in the Aether and Nether portal activation methods, and the immersive way you made it impossible to make the portals in their opposing world. The Swets are one of the most interesting semi-hostile mob ideas that I've ever seen, and by far the most unique, though their name is rather odd.
If it requires going into the nether, then there should also be a new block for making the portal. A glowing block that would be like the diamond of the nether. It would be as rare as diamond and could also come from rare sper dungeons in the nether that are like 30x30 and have ghast-spawners on the ceilings. also, instead of becoming more likely to spawn when mining deeper, it should be more easily found near the top of the nether. also, it needs to cast light; lots of light.

The aether portal should not be made of glowstone. That would be extremely ugly. Instead it should be made of marble. Of you want to make it require entering the nether than just make marble be nether only.
That would be particularly amusing for an Aether update (heavenly realm) to be implemented during Easter, but I get the feeling he's going to add chocolate and allow eggs to be crafted with the dyes instead. It seems a lot easier. Then again, Maybe Aether will be what he's trying to have ready, but Easter Eggs are just the backup plan.

He's gonna add the aether when the nether is more interesting
The Aether just makes sense, having an opposite to the Nether. But Notch is right; both dimensions need to be more interesting. The only reason you ever go to the nether is for glowstone.
I thought that when the thread title said that the current topic was "Notch" that we would add him as the minecraft god, and he would sit upon a golden throne in the Aether...

You mean this one?
Yes.

I want an army of "Pigusi" (pigasus plural?) now.

TL;DR: I voted for option one.
