Could we please stop this from becoming a flamewar? I really wouldn't like to see this thread locked.
That's the problem. This being a suggestion/discussion thread there is very little distinction between flaming and discussing.
However, I agree, we should probably stop "discussing" soon. It is apparent that neither is doing anything to point out the flaws of the current system, just arguing on why it should be included. Since this has nothing to do with improving the current system, since it's pretty much officially "the system" I think we should move on to either new ideas or to making the graphic of the songstone or something. Since Notch has indeed confirmed the possibility of an Aether, we should be working less on criticism than on finalizing details (There's a fine line in between the two).
Just approach your blocks diagonally (placing blocks as needed) Sure, mining one of your breezeblocks will possibly reveal a block that is even stronger, but breaking any block NEXT to it will always make it weaker. As for always knowing which way it's pointed, you only know that on the external layer. You don't necessarily know what's going to be on the layer behind that, or how strong it will be unless you mine out the entire chain. Whereas yours requires only a superficial glance to tell what powers and dangers are going to be involved.
and LOL; my brezeblock has an input and an output, that no other block in minecraft has! So? We also have Darkwood, the only block in minecraft that decreases light values in the area around it and has a "cold" effect, we have Aetherock, the only block that has a variable texture dependent on its surroundings, we have Floatsand, the only block that can fall in a direction other than down, and we have Crystal, the only block that directs natural lighting, etc etc etc.
Why suddenly draw the line at breezeblock doing something that no other block in minecraft does? The only reason I can see is because you have your heart set on Notch including a craftable pipe system, or perhaps you're a fan of a mod that includes it. I don't really know but it's the only reason I can see that makes sense. Either way, I'm not dumbing the idea down just because you specifically want to craft pipes instead of mining them.
The current method a damn good job at moving air, and it does a damn good job at moving water, lava,(maybe even fire) and items on top of that. It also does a damn good job at being easily used by the player since even though they may need more blocks to generate stronger winds, that stuff can all be tucked out of the way with a single pipe leading to where they actually want the wind.

Elmach, there is a huge difference between a flamewar and this, and this isn't even coming close to a flamewar. There are no personal insults being sent, and while some of the arguments aren't being well formed or communicated, the intent is still there for one person to get the other to understand their idea. Flamewars are just random personal attacks.
And... Does wind spread?
It really needs to be in a straight line. Having wind spread out to the sides would be even harder than handling water, since you wouldn't just be dealing with a fan shape, but a cone shape. It would be better to just have it as a single column in whatever direction the wind is blowing.
I have a new idea for breezeblock! (though in this idea it will probably need a new name)
Block properties:
*It counts as a source-block for whatever liquid is in contact with it. So if it is in contact with lava, it will count as a lava source-block and produce a stream of lava as such.
*If not in contact with a liquid, it will default with "air" and cause a liquid-like push in a area surrounding it out to 12 blocks facing outwards. (even up)
*if in contact with water and lava at the same time, it will count water first.
*If receiving a redstone power, it turns off.
I call it: Springstone!
I dare anyone to try to find a problem with this simple solution!
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I once saw a chicken push a creeper off of a cliff. I never looked at chickens the same way ever again. That is of course until I needed feathers.
Some problems as other breezeblock ideas that have been proposed; no clear way to control power output, and from what I'm understanding, this springstone would need to be surrounded in blocks to be able to function as a pipe, at which point you might as well take a bucket and move it to the output side, since you'd not only have to lay down a chain of springstone, but also surround it as well.
I have a new idea for breezeblock! (though in this idea it will probably need a new name)

That's basically my suggestion, sans power increases for shutting off sides, plus ability to act as liquid sources.
Not really, "BreezeBlock" per se but atleast if feels like it should be in minecraft.

Regardless of if it adds something to the game or not.
You NEED to be able to defend your idea against the criticisms of "Why not this way?" or "Why have it at all?" (Guess I should just just say that in my response to Grey next time)
If your best response is "Because it'd be funny" people will laugh off your pitiful excuse for a reason.
For example: "I WANT BEDS!" "Why?" "Because I like jumping on them."
Not because he wants it for aesthetic reasons, not because he wants to introduce a new survival mechanic... He wants to jump on them.
Yeah, BRILLIANT reason there.

And if you're REALLY going to say "Move water or lava", Why have it be an Aether block instead of something craftable?
You NEED better reasons than "Why not?" Because that's basically the reason you've given, and here's the quote to prove it:

Why leave such a glaring flaw in a block that should, for all intents and purposes of the Aether, be dangerous just to be around? (Ignore mining it, a single dirt block means you can continue exploring completely ignoring the breezeblock)
Are we making this BreezeBlock for the PLAYER or for the AETHER? Remember what thread you're in Grey. (You already have the 2x2 for the player)
For the Aether, where the ENVIRONMENT is out to get you, this block is one of the tamest and least threatening via your method. Was that your intent?

These are all very grand ideas, but some things need to be rethought over.
I DON'T LIKE THE IDEA OF THE AETHER BLOCK AT ALL.
There's no Nether block, so why would there be an Aether block?
Instead, it should be an identical portal made out of either gold blocks or lightstone... both would be challenging to construct because you'd have to gather enough resources to make either 10 gold blocks or 10 lightstone blocks.
Here's another thing that annoys me: Quicksoil.
MAKE IT LOOK UNIQUE TO OTHER BLOCKS! PLEASE DON'T USE THE DIRT BLOCK AND JUST RECOLOR IT.
I also don't like the fact that it continues to increase your speed... that just sounds dangerous. How fast can you go... is there a limit, and what is with this oxygen factor? -Sounds a little too complicated for me to imagine... programming put aside.
I DO LIKE THESE THOUGH, AND BECAUSE THEY MAKE SENSE, WITH A FEW MINOR DETAILS AND EDITS:
DARKWOOD OF THE NETHER
FLOATSAND
BREEZEBLOCK
COLDCLOUD... -MINUS the "breaking" feature before gathering. (HOW WILL YOU DO THIS IF IT DISSAPEARS AFTER TOUCH?)
CRYSTAL... -MINUS where it grows. Have it grow on the underneath of islands!!! Also have it replace the diamond in the original recipe for a Record Player. I LOVE THE IDEA FOR ELECTRIC LIGHTING, Like a lightbulb.

If you say "Because you can create huge power outputs", please give an example where they'd be useful but not incredibly dangerous? (Because they wouldn't be dangerous in the overworld due to the major flaw which I'll address next.)
Summed up in 1 word; Efficiency.
1) My breezeblock system means that once you've created a cluster to generate the desired power output, you only need a 1x1 tunnel to pipe items or air from one place to another. The same is true for liquids, though if any turns are present, they will need to be surrounded on the 4 outside edges of that turn (3x2 width at corners for liquids)
Compare that to the system that you're proposing, where you would not only be forced to surround the tunnel you wanted to push the items through with 4 blocks (making every tunnel a 3x3) but would also REQUIRE you to have staggered turns in the middle at specific intervals related to the strength of the block, meaning that going in a straight line could actually require a 3x4 tunnel(even if it only requires 3x3 during any particular segment)
If you're looking just at the purpose of blowing air, it's still more efficient if you only consider the specific area that is being built. Yes, more breezeblocks in total will be needed to generate the desired wind power, but the actual output itself only needs to take up the single block, and the surrounding blocks, or lack thereof will make no difference in design.
2) And it's not just being capable of huge power outputs, but VARIABLE power outputs. you remember how you were talking about an elevator that could take you to multiple levels? Well guess what? My Breezeblocks would let you automatically vary the output of a single block, and let it lift you 5 blocks up, 10 blocks up, 17 blocks up, etc. and the shaft you would move up would not need to be any wider or more complicated to accommodate this. All of the complex stuff can be tucked away at a remote site with only some buttons or levers controlling which set of breezeblocks are adding power, leaving the elevator shaft itself sleek and uncomplicated.
3) Having the breezeblock be both blow AND suck also increases what uses it can have in crafting. I've already mentioned the vacuum chests which will pull items in automatically, but if Breezeblocks only blew, then it wouldn't make any sense to be able to do that.
Your method STILL has the massive flaw of only having one dangerous spot. And as said before a single dirt block can make even a strength of 255 completely harmless. Why leave such a glaring flaw in a block that should, for all intents and purposes of the Aether, be dangerous just to be around? (Ignore mining it, a single dirt block means you can continue exploring completely ignoring the breezeblock)
1) You keep saying that 1 soil block will stop everything because it only has one output, but you can have MULTIPLE breezeblocks all next to each other pointing in the same direction. Sure, at that rate they need a larger cluster at the back end to get significant power, but it only needs a power of 3 or 4 to be problematic. Furthermore, the player takes up TWO blocks, not just 1.
(remember, [o] is breezeblock viewed from the front)
[o][^][o]
[<][o][>] >Whooosh>
[o][v][o] __________
this setup could be just as troublesome as your cluster of blocks blowing all directions would be. Heck, If I came across your breezeblock, I could just mine down until i was below it and couldn't be blown away, so any flaws as a hazard that you're seeing in my version are no worse than flaws that ANY block that just blows the player around would be.
So with the much bigger advantages that I stated that my blocks have, and the fact that its' supposed "weakness" isn't really that big of a deal; yeah, I haven't been budged on my breezeblocks, and if anything, I like them more now.

For the player, duh.
As I pointed out, ANY block that can only blow at the player has the basic weakness that it can't follow the player around, but that's what Zephyrs are for. Breezeblock is NEVER going to be Aether's big trump card, so with that in mind I'm just going to focus on what it can do for the player.

1. What Eat911 said.
2. If you can read, you would know what Zephyrs do.
3. Pigasus is very cheesy. Phyg is just fine.
He has a point though. It's just Pig + Pegasus, which is exactly what it is (the only thing he got wrong is that he got the plural of Pegasus wrong, which is still Pegasus) It's a lot easier to understand conceptually, and retains the word "pig" much better which brings it closer to what the Sheepuff is like, whereas Phyg actually ends up getting pronounced "Fig" When I came up with the name originally, i was trying to combine "flying pigs" into one word, but I don't think it does nearly as good of a job.
I think I'm going to leave it as Pigasus for a while and give it a chance to grow on people.
nectar/god water maybe like a golden water that flows like normal water. putting it in a pail (like normal water) and right clicking while in hand heals 4 hearts.2 ideas for bringing it to earth either it turns to normal water(OR)(because of uselessness) poring it on other blocks in the normal world to gold but disappears after it reaches flowing distance.
and in the nether is automatically turns to lave.
maybe a friendly mob such as a friendly cloud that spits out something after a little while
maybe something to collect air with for levitation(kinda odd topic but...)
maybe falling or jumping off a cliff and going to zone limit will automatically bring you to a corresponding square in the normal world(always shifting corresponding sectors?)
these are just kewl ideas
love the idea

I don't really like the idea for the nectar; it seems un-needed to me.
Also, a mob that randomly helps you out doesn't really seem too good to me, either (maybe if you feed it or something?)
As for collecting air, I think a good idea is (if airships are implemented) to kill Aerwhales and collect their air bladders for use as the envelopes of airships.
I love the idea of being taken to corresponding areas of the normal world, and I also like the idea of shifting sectors. It allows for faster exploring by getting to a random area faster, but cannot be used like the Nether for reliable transportation.

I already explained in that post some more tangible reasons for it.
As for moving the dirt, I didn't. I was talking about how in construction, there could be multiple outputs.
If a wind block's power is preserved between the breezeblock-air-breezblock interim, this could be used to blow out of multiple facets. Then, multiple dirt blocked would be needed unless you dug around the blocks.
Anyways, Grey. Your "excuse" was efficiency, which I claimed for mine previously and you tossed away.
Mine uses less BB, but slightly more space.
Your uses more BB, but uses only 1x1 (after having carved out at minimum a 2x1 to simply place it)
Also the whole "Mine makes more sense in possible recipes" is completely pointless.
1) POSSIBLE recipes.
2) I could probably think up recipes that mine would "make sense for" that yours wouldn't.
Neither of these lend reason to why yours over mine.
So I ask again... Why yours over mine.
Mine still stands at easier to code (assuming Geysers are still wanted and floatsand is also implemented).

I hope you can see why I don't take your reasoning or arguments seriously now.
(also you moved the dirt block in your airflow diagram)
Okay Grey, let's look at this from another angle...
Why your method over mine? And be EXPLICIT. Tell me something yours can do that mine can't.
And if you're REALLY going to say "Move water or lava", Why have it be an Aether block instead of something craftable?
You NEED better reasons than "Why not?" Because that's basically the reason you've given, and here's the quote to prove it:
(Note, I don't mod outside of skinpacks. I play vanilla)
If you say "Because you can create huge power outputs", please give an example where they'd be useful but not incredibly dangerous? (Because they wouldn't be dangerous in the overworld due to the major flaw which I'll address next.)
(Please leave your responses in relation to your block. I haven't brought up mine in this post, neither should you. [outside of what can it do mine can't] I don't want to see question redirection as means of avoiding the question.)
&
STICKY SAND: LOVE IT, LOVE IT, LOVE IT!!!
As far as the Mobs are concearned... I loved everything EXECPT: ZEPHYRS, because I have no idea as to what they do...
ALSO!!! PHYGS should be called PIGASUSES, instead!!!
Netherrack. That's the nether block. It burn's eternally on all sides. It used to be referred to as Netherstone.
Netherrack
The portal to the Aether already is planned to use Glowstone blocks. Did you somehow get confused and think that Aetherock was the material you needed to use for building the Portal to the Aether?
Sorry you don't like the color, maybe we'll add some swirls or stripes to it or something, i don't know, but for now, that's the extent to which my artistic abilities really allow.
Cold Cloud doesn't dissapear, it "melts away" into an insubstantial cloud that you will fall through like air, but it can be gathered in a bucket. It will also re-solidify after a few seconds.
Sorry, I like the idea of crystal trees, I'm sticking with that.
Zephyrs float around and will try to blow you off of the edges of the floating islands. It will be a lot like getting hit with a bunch of invisible snowballs, not damaging in itself, but it can knock you into open air for you to plummet to your death.
I actually rather like that. I think I'm going to change it to that and see what people think. If no one likes it, i'll change it back.

1. What Eat911 said.
2. If you can read, you would know what Zephyrs do.
3. Pigasus is very cheesy. Phyg is just fine.
I think I'm going to leave it as Pigasus for a while and give it a chance to grow on people.

and in the nether is automatically turns to lave.
maybe a friendly mob such as a friendly cloud that spits out something after a little while
maybe something to collect air with for levitation(kinda odd topic but...)
maybe falling or jumping off a cliff and going to zone limit will automatically bring you to a corresponding square in the normal world(always shifting corresponding sectors?)
these are just kewl ideas
love the idea
I don't really like the idea for the nectar; it seems un-needed to me.
Also, a mob that randomly helps you out doesn't really seem too good to me, either (maybe if you feed it or something?)
As for collecting air, I think a good idea is (if airships are implemented) to kill Aerwhales and collect their air bladders for use as the envelopes of airships.
I love the idea of being taken to corresponding areas of the normal world, and I also like the idea of shifting sectors. It allows for faster exploring by getting to a random area faster, but cannot be used like the Nether for reliable transportation.
Just mah thoughts.
It's not so much of a "It's a joke, lol" as a "Because there is no good reason not to."
I already explained in that post some more tangible reasons for it.
As for moving the dirt, I didn't. I was talking about how in construction, there could be multiple outputs.
[^] = breezeblock
(^) = Wind
[] [] [] (^) [] [] []
[] [] [] [^] [] [] []
(<) (<) [<] (^) [>] (>) (>)
(<) [<] [<] (^) [>] [>] (>)
If a wind block's power is preserved between the breezeblock-air-breezblock interim, this could be used to blow out of multiple facets. Then, multiple dirt blocked would be needed unless you dug around the blocks.
Agreed. It can also be misread as 'Pigasaurus.'
I want a giant pig boss. Now!
There's no good reason not to make monsters instant kill you on Hard.
Does that mean it should happen? No, not really.
That image really only showed a single output, but with multiple outputs per block, that's basically the combination of Grey and My ideas, except it still gets weaker as you dig into it.
Lastly, one more vote for Phyg over Pigasus.
Edit: Wikipedia has cool ideas.
"In Nordic Mythology, Gullinbursti ("Gold-Bristle" or "Gold-Mane") was Freyr's golden boar, created by the dwarves Brokk and Sindri as part of a challenge. His shining fur is said to fill the sky, trees, and sea with light."
We could have animals that glow really bright making it difficult to see, even during Day/Aether night.
