However, I don't think it should require a portal to travel to. Maybe it would be good if you had to venture up a tall mountain in a Mountains biome and kill an occaisonal, but not super-rare low flying Aerwhal in order to get its bladder for air travel as the only way to venture that high in the sky.

Honestly, though, I wouldn't mind having high-up floating islands generate anyways.
And there never was any kind of definite connection between the Nether and the Overworld, so who says there has to be one between the Aether and the Overworld? Yes, there is the whole bit about being able to fall out of the Aether to the Overworld, but that has been explained by a one-way portal at the 'bottom'.
At least, that's how I see it.

Very probably insane, so don't mind me too much when I ramble.
Sabata, since the block defaults to carrying air, the it would be just fine without the air pockets. Transporting water might be different though...
Yes, transporting water/lava would need to use the same setup as what Zophah's version needs just for air. Actually, it would also be able to use the method that Sabata proposed:
this method would cause the output to have a water pressure of 3 at the end(assuming that the output is at the top left, and the input is bottom right)
( =Water being pumped from the output of a breezeblock)
This would result in a water pressure of only 1 at the end.
Actually, my "piping" system can't pipe lava or water, as it requires a source-block at the input in order to pump it and the output doesn't make any source-blocks. (this is to prevent people using it as an infinite source of lava and to prevent the output from spilling over) However, it can perfectly pump any and all items:

it's not like the entire nether is covered in sticky sand, so if you want to get off of the sand, just walk off of it, and you could always mine down THROUGH it if that's not possible, then build back up. Those random pockets mean that the generation would have to occur RECURSIVELY.
Do you know how SLOW that is? Or how resource intensive it is?
As for the sabata-brand-breezeblock, I was planning on having it form in clusters (similar to lightstone) only inside caves. It could very easily push you off one of the randomly generated in cavern cliffs, especially if run into unexpectedly.
Yours on the other hand. Would 1) have to STOP inside the cave making it harmless at any point else. 2) quite literally HAVE to be in a position where it's either as high as the wall you're sticking to (multiple chains ending as such) OR it would have to be hidden from view, one block away from a cliff WITH no wall against it's opposite side.

Mine doesn't necessarily HAVE to be hidden from view, it just has to be condensed in the way of the only path (excusing digging around it because that defeats both our blocks). Imagine trying to dig through a block that's pushing you 5 blocks away in ALL directions, with your 4 block reach.
You just have to cluster my block a little and you get an ORB of "You can't get past here without digging around me".

Tada, a hop, skip, and a jump... OR A DIRT BLOCK, and it's pointless.

So yeah, to sum up what we've gone through for the past 2 days... Your Breezeblock chain is entirely defeated by a single dirt block. Your "piping" system for items can be achieved via my block. Your piping system for water/lava can be achieved easier via buckets. Your desire for geysers can be achieved by giving Water the same code as floatsand (or very similar).

I have a few questions.
1. How do you reach the darkwood trees that grow upside down in the Aether?
They're intended to be a pain in the ass to mine from the Aether, basically you'd have to leave the bottom-most darkwood block and mine everything above it. Of course, I've also considered skipping darkwood's appearance in the Aether.
2. Aetherrock sounds like it will be very bad. Very very bad. Maybe you could make it semi-transparent so it's not impossible to tell if you are going to die with your next step?
Not every Aetherock is going to drop you out the bottom of the island. Some might only be 1 block deep, some might only be 3 or 4, some might be longer, but even then it's not like every cluster of aetherock is going to generate straight down, there will likely be places where it shifts a block to one side as it travels down, so even if the chain goes all the way through the island, you still wont fall all the way through. If you make it semi-transparent, then it loses it's usefulness as camouflaged entrances, doorways, and pitfalls in SMP. You should be able to use water, items, and gold boots as a method of not falling through them immediately.
@Sabata & GreyAcumen: Why not my idea? it may not be as lethal when generated, but has a lot of potential when used by the player and that is what counts in Minecraft when introducing new blocks. I was thinking my block would generate in the Aether like pumpkins do in the overworld: rare but unique, in clusters on the surface (or even on the underside!) all facing the same direction.

I once saw a chicken push a creeper off of a cliff. I never looked at chickens the same way ever again. That is of course until I needed feathers.
While I generally dislike jumping in the middle of a discussion...
Grey's method allows for more powerful individual outputs, which makes it better I think, even completely removing the whole piping thing (Which I expect would be horrendously complicated to program in it's current proposed form).
Sabata's method is simple.
Also, Grey's method allows for infinite loops that would probably crash the game.
I would say Grey's method, with easily variable power and high maximums, has more potential for doing anything more epic than a wind elevator, along with the associated risks, difficulties, and probably glitches.
Sabata's method is less desireable but is pretty much guaranteed to work as intended.
And overall I don't really care which one is used.
Also, Grey's method allows for infinite loops that would probably crash the game.
Not so. I've already considered what something like;
[>][v]
[^][<]
would do, and really, the most that would happen is that it would cycle itself up to max power and then stop. Since it's not actually OUTPUTTING anything it doesn't matter. In order to get it to actually blow, you'd need to remove or turn a block, at which point you might have a couple game cycles while it runs at full power before the tail end receiving no extra input catches up to the front end and causes it to peter out.
I was considering having it set up so that turning a block or removing a breezeblock would cause all breezeblocks in that chain to trace back to source before deciding the output power, but I actually kinda like the idea that people could take advantage of it this way in order to create a compact method of getting max power for short bursts. Of course you can only turn or place blocks manually, so it wouldn't be like you could create an automated system that took advantage of this exploit. The only thing it would really be useful for is making personally operated air cannons to hurl mobs out of.
I wonder if anyone here actually has made any mods to the game, because if they haven't, all this talk about, "coding this will cause the game to crash, burn, turn into a toaster for a second, and then load all of NASA'S servers with creepers going around and blowing up their programming," is rather irritating. I myself have very little understanding of it, which I plan to rectify in the future.

Because it sucks. And I don't know about you, but when I come back from a camping trip, indoor plumbing IS heavenly.
Also, as for it being realistic or not (For both, this is pointless. We aren't talking about building a simulator, we're building a game. Reality only matters if the game is trying to be realistic. If a game's main goal is fun, reality is only held on enough for the fun to be fun, keep it real enough that the players can understand the world.
i really like this idea, and perhaps the aether gate should be made of lightstone blocks (you must journey to hell to get to heaven) or something like that.
Also perhaps their should be angel pig men and for the nether a skeleton whale that lives in the lava.
but yuh this idea is so much win, it would make a great addition to the game.
You know how the Nether is "smaller" then the normal world? Which allows for faster travelling.
What if the Aether was "larger?" If 8 Nether meters equal one Normal meter, what if 8 Normal meters equal one Aether meter? That means if you have a relatively small space on the normal world, it would be much larger in the Aether.

1) I meant naturally. I know of Dyson's fan (and it's effing sweet).
2) Grey, if I'm doing it then we're both doing it. Your explanation for why it would work used Real World physics etc for something that doesn't occur naturally. But that's your reasoning for wanting it to occur naturally.
It's the only block in the Aether, that you feel NEEDS to be logical.
And my original opposition WASN'T that it can't exist in the real world (that was only because of your most recent attempt to justify it). My original opposition was there was nothing in MINECRAFT that acted like it. NOTHING has an Input and Output.
3)
3 Dimensional cluster shaped like this: (probably at widest point not lower than "cave floor level")
Place a block behind you as you mine? Yeah same can be done for yours, but yours doesn't get STRONGER as you mine into it.
[] []
[]
[]
[] []
Each block you mine away makes it harder to get the one behind it. Starting on the "easiest to mine" block causes a "hardest to mine" block to show up behind it.
Hell with this specific pattern ANY block you break causes a max power burst in your direction.
And Grey, yes yours can come in clusters as well, all windy and twisty turny to get max power on that output, BUT IT'S STILL ONE OUTPUT.
Block the output, get on top of it, stand on the block behind (in chain order) the one you plan to mine, and MOVE BACKWARDS (down the chain). The ONLY thing you have to look out for are those ones that will cover outputs pointing up. but again, stand back a bit, and you can mine in safety, BECAUSE THE REST OF YOUR CLUSTER IS DOING NOTHING.
4) Trees are also incredibly tiny, and they don't have to BRANCH THEIR RECURSION.
And yes, the Air behind the SI WOULD require branched recursion. 1 branch to generate the continued string, the other to make sure that each turn has the proper air pocket.
Also, TREES DON'T BEND RANDOMLY IN THE MIDDLE.
5) The point isn't to prove your Breezeblocks CAN'T do something, it's proving that anything YOU can come up with MY breezeblock can do, at a MUCH lighter coding cost.
YOUR Breezeblock is TOO COMPLICATED for what you want it to do! I've proven that with

As for the "physics of air", either you're saying it would forcefully push the dirt out of the way (something never suggested for BB) or the "breeze" would still hit the player before they could place the block to stop the flow.
Both of which would apply just as much to my block :sleep.gif:

Um, I didn't post anything about moving dirt.
I was posting about getting maximum velocity on dirt, and then the wind hitting dirt somewhere underground to be sucked into other breezeblocks, "effectively" making multiple outputs out of one input.
My reason being "LITERALLY A JOKE" seems perfectly fine with me. In Minecraft, the object of the game is to start with punching trees for wood so you can make torches and live in a hobbit hole, because at night (Or anywhere dark) giant spiders, skeletons, zombies, and weird little green quadrupeds come out. The giant spiders drop string, zombies drop feathers, and the creepers, if they don't go kamikaze on you using their own inborn explosive bodies, will drop gunpowder, when mixed with sand comes out with TNT, which can be set off (from a distance) with red powder you find deep underground, if the red powder is nearby a torch made of the powder, or some sort of stone/wood switch.
Why does the plumber get the princess, by traveling through pipes and killing mushrooms and turtles? Because he CAN.
Why do creepers stalk you and go boom!? Because they are sad, and lonely, and probably play too much minecraft (And also, because they can. And probably, because Notch is weird).
Why are there pipes in the Aether? Because they suck (And because we can).
If you want a real reason, it's because air manipulating blocks should probably occur in the windy floating islands of the Aether, and a pipe happens to be a REAL object that DOES manipulate air, and so it is the basis for these blocks.
Also, I'm now boycotting INAPPROPRIATE use of CAPSLOCK. AND. PERIODS.
TRY. ITALICS.
That is all.

4) Trees generate recursively, why not breezeblock? Or if trees don't why can't breezeblock use the same method for generation?
5) You have yet to come up with anything that my breezeblocks actually can't do. You've made the assertions that they can't, but I've debunked all of them.
They're intended to be a pain in the ass to mine from the Aether, basically you'd have to leave the bottom-most darkwood block and mine everything above it. Of course, I've also considered skipping darkwood's appearance in the Aether.

Not so. I've already considered what something like;
[>][v]
[^][<]
would do, and really, the most that would happen is that it would cycle itself up to max power and then stop.

You're ignoring my posts.
I want you to make, with current materials and your breezeblock, a system that can simply make it so that with a flip of a switch, you can fill or drain a 1-block wide river. Then, I might agree with....
...
You ARE ignoring my posts. IT'S A PIPE, STUFF GOES IN, STUFF GOES OUT. ITS AS COMPLICATED AS LEGOS.
One dirt block? Well, that depends on the physics of wind...
<-- <-- ^ --> -->
I'm pretty sure this is in the OP...
Someone tweet Notch about this. If someone's already tweeted him, do it again.
Glad I didn't.
+1 for this idea, awesome.

I've proven that with
@Kamil
I'm curious what you think you can do with Grey's that you couldn't with mine. (serious question)
@TS
Yeah I'm ignoring you, but that's because Grey's really the one I'm after here.
Also, you're advocating PIPE, not Breezeblock. Go ahead and suggest a Pipe 3x3 construction pattern, but NOT. IN. THE. AETHER.
Hell your only reason for having this Pipe in the Aether was LITERALLY A JOKE.
As for the "physics of air", either you're saying it would forcefully push the dirt out of the way (something never suggested for BB) or the "breeze" would still hit the player before they could place the block to stop the flow.
Both of which would apply just as much to my block :sleep.gif:
We've been arguing based on the assumption BB can only blow movable blocks (floatsand), and the flow only occurs in one direction until it's power is out.

I put a link to here just before the chat on livestream stopped, and apparently it was seen!

GENERATION 20: The first time you see this, copy it into your sig on any forum and add 1 to the generation.
EDIT: MasterZero, you've outdone yourself.
