Daey- ultra bright, maybe injures you when trapped without shade?
Day-normally bright
maybe wind added, just so when the zephyrs take effect they have code for their effect already there, also it would add hazard to daey if wind is stronger and more frequent then.
blocks:
aetherrock. original idea: takes on whatever block it was placed against.
my idea: just like regular stone, but has some yet-to-be-determined special property, like netherrack, which can burn forever.
songstone. original idea: emits wind and generates sound.
my idea: emits a tone when wind blows over it, which varies with the length of the vein. can also be activated with redstone.
floatsand. original idea: when stricken/powered by redstone moves away from perturbation.
my idea: can be blown by wind to some degree, moves away faster the stronger the tool used to strike it was.
quicksand: accelerates the player faster the longer he is on it. oxygen starts being used once player accelerates to mine cart speed.
cold cloud: original idea: dematerializes after being stood on for too long, reappears soon after.
My idea: if triggered by redstone, reusable water/lava outputs could be used, instead of the glitch.
crystal: focuses and redirects light, grows on aether trees.
my idea: forms veins. drops must be refined by furnace. collects light from all available facets, and redirects through darkest facet. if crafted with one shard on each side ( crystal ore in crafting table yields 9 crystal shards) will take light from lightest facet, and redirect through all open facets. NOTE: the light reflected out will be emitted in a beam, not in a spread, like a torch. for spread light you must craft a plus-shaped design out of crystal shards. if any of the following end results are crafted with redstone dust surrounding the item, a redstone controlled item is produced.
my ideas for blocks.
thundercloud: electrocutes you if you step on it, akin to lava in the aether, but does not destroy items immediately, you have 2 minutes to reclaim. on contact with water, disintegrates resulting in a flash of electricity, similar to TNT or a creeper, except with a much larger radius of effect.
brigecloud: forms bridges from island to island, bends according to wind.
floatcloud: if touched by player starts to float, going higher and higher.will suffocate the player and crush items if runs into the map top or another block. stops only once player has been removed from block through death, or otherwise.
raincloud: generates rain, another liquid, like water and lava but only flows three blocks it is exactly the same as water in other aspects except for if it comes in contact with any water block turns that block into a spawn block. also will not harden lava, but instead empties all blocks in which rain would be in if there was no lava of lava. it is also unclimbable, and exerts very little resistance on walking. also, can be placed in nether, but will shrivel up if not replaced after a few minecraft days, or touching a fluffcloud block.
fluffcloud- is in the core of clouds: if you clear a cloud of this material, the cloud withers. will disintegrate in nether unless touching another cloud, and even then you only have ten seconds to place another cloud block in contact with this block, then the timer restarts, until the entire flufflcloud block is covered in other cloud blocks. then you would have a cloud in the nether. this block is also immaterial to mobs or the player, and no redstone, or minecart rails can be placed on normal fluffcloud. it must be collected by bucket. if 9 are crafted together, they will result in a immaterial block on which both redstone and minecart rails can be placed.
cirrus cloud. travel in the direction of the wind very fast. on collision of the player, they lose speed, and the player is sent flying and damaged. on colision of blocks, they reshuffle and flow around it, reforming as soon as possible.

Holy ****. Looks awesome. some of the blocks seem to be overly complex, though. like the songstone. most blocks (even Nether) follow the same rulesets. Sand/Gravel falling, and Ice/Soulsand making the player slide seem to be the most complex blocks made. Now Darkwood growing upside down, Darkshard torches emitting -5 light makes sense, even Aether-rock changing properties of itself to an adjacent material (maybe based on cursor highlight like torch placement?) seems plausible. but Songstone stretches the envelope a bit...
perhaps with a bit more tweaking, this could be OMG amazing, but now it is still a fledgling thread. I recommend songstone is cut in favor of a simpler design... unless you could make the implementation less complex. eg, pushes all mobs and players away in all directions.
actually, I like that...

maybe wind added, just so when the zephyrs take effect they have code for their effect already there, also it would add hazard to daey if wind is stronger and more frequent then.
Critique: If there is already wind there, that takes away from the emphasis of the zephyrs. Notch probably would only add one or the other, if he does add this. Plus, constant wind might get irritating.
blocks:
aetherrock. original idea: takes on whatever block it was placed against.
my idea: just like regular stone, but has some yet-to-be-determined special property, like netherrack, which can burn forever.
Critique: Isn't the like whatever-it-is-placed-next-to the special property?
songstone. original idea: emits wind and generates sound.
my idea: emits a tone when wind blows over it, which varies with the length of the vein. can also be activated with redstone.
Critique: Notch already confirmed adding music blocks. I think the point is less of the tone than of the wind-harnessing capabilities.
floatsand. original idea: when stricken/powered by redstone moves away from perturbation.
my idea: can be blown by wind to some degree, moves away faster the stronger the tool used to strike it was.
Critique: Wind-blown: I approve, it makes sense. Stronger Tools: I disagree. While physics are at a wonderful balance between realistic and non realistic (Minecarts and Water), in this case, I op for physics.
quicksand: accelerates the player faster the longer he is on it. oxygen starts being used once player accelerates to mine cart speed.
cold cloud: original idea: dematerializes after being stood on for too long, reappears soon after.
My idea: if triggered by redstone, reusable water/lava outputs could be used, instead of the glitch.
Critique: I approve, we need some way to let water pass. But the problem is, how do we get it to reappear after water passed through, since water replaces the cold cloud block?
crystal: focuses and redirects light, grows on aether trees.
my idea: forms veins. drops must be refined by furnace. collects light from all available facets, and redirects through darkest facet. if crafted with one shard on each side ( crystal ore in crafting table yields 9 crystal shards) will take light from lightest facet, and redirect through all open facets. NOTE: the light reflected out will be emitted in a beam, not in a spread, like a torch. for spread light you must craft a plus-shaped design out of crystal shards. if any of the following end results are crafted with redstone dust surrounding the item, a redstone controlled item is produced.
Rephrase please, I am confused.
my ideas for blocks.
thundercloud: electrocutes you if you step on it, akin to lava in the aether, but does not destroy items immediately, you have 2 minutes to reclaim. on contact with water, disintegrates resulting in a flash of electricity, similar to TNT or a creeper, except with a much larger radius of effect.
Critique: TNT has a larger radius than Creeper, and already that's big enough. If the Aether, in which water should be easily accessible, has stuff like this, it'll be too much like the Nether's ghasts. [/color
brigecloud]Critique: Approved, but I'd like it if isolated islands weren't uncommon, with exponentially increasing rarity of more connected islands.
I.E: 50% of islands isolated, 30% of 2 islands connected, 15% 3 islands, 5% more, etc (something like that)
floatcloud: if touched by player starts to float, going higher and higher.will suffocate the player and crush items if runs into the map top or another block. stops only once player has been removed from block through death, or otherwise.
Critique:This seems like a one-missstep = certain death. Which is fine when you are a thousand feet off the ground and you fall, but stepping on seemingly harmless clouds seems just irritating.
raincloud: generates rain, another liquid, like water and lava but only flows three blocks it is exactly the same as water in other aspects except for if it comes in contact with any water block turns that block into a spawn block. also will not harden lava, but instead empties all blocks in which rain would be in if there was no lava of lava. it is also unclimbable, and exerts very little resistance on walking. also, can be placed in nether, but will shrivel up if not replaced after a few minecraft days, or touching a fluffcloud block.
Critique:
Water + lava = hardened lava, water gone
Water vapor + lava = water vapor, lava gone?
And placing it in the nether seems kind of against the point.
fluffcloud- is in the core of clouds: if you clear a cloud of this material, the cloud withers. will disintegrate in nether unless touching another cloud, and even then you only have ten seconds to place another cloud block in contact with this block, then the timer restarts, until the entire flufflcloud block is covered in other cloud blocks. then you would have a cloud in the nether. this block is also immaterial to mobs or the player, and no redstone, or minecart rails can be placed on normal fluffcloud. it must be collected by bucket. if 9 are crafted together, they will result in a immaterial block on which both redstone and minecart rails can be placed.
Critique:Added transparency? it could work, added transparency would make walking through it less irritating. Except the part in the nether. I still don't like that.
cirrus cloud. travel in the direction of the wind very fast. on collision of the player, they lose speed, and the player is sent flying and damaged. on colision of blocks, they reshuffle and flow around it, reforming as soon as possible.
Critique:his would be hard if, like I said earlier, there was no natural wind. Might a light wind would be less problematic. However, flying death-clouds that you can dodge are a lot better than the float clouds.
Also, as a note, not everything in a floating island needs be a cloud.
i probably sound like i own this thread, which is not what i intended. please excuse my authoritarian demeanor.

I apologize in kind, but don't be too worried. If the discussion wasn't a little heated, how could we refine these ideas enough for Notch to accept?
Although, it would help if we focused more on refining and less on new ideas. It would be easier if this thread was more structured, but mostly people are just suggesting at a whim. If there was a way to focus on individual pieces at a time, we could probably get more done.
My Ideas:
- How about some restraint on the Aetherrack so that the player isn't constantly falling off, like sneaking actually won't let player fall?
-How about the more input a songstone system has, the stronger the wind, until it caps at something. Also, degradation of wind with distance, or not (I might suggest not, since the songstones generate wind, but still it is something to consider).
Apologies if I sounded... abrasive. While I don't actually know much about the coding of minecraft, or of this particular thread (read only the main post and a few pages.), I was more confused on the way the game would determine which direction to "blow or suck" and if it blew in one direction and pulled from another, how it would decide. So, if I misunderstood the proposed mechanics of the block, my bad.
Also, I really like this Aether plan. But I kind of feel like maybe Notch hesitates on the big, wonderful, well-backed ideas because they are either daunting or were "too little his(?)." but maybe my overeagerness didn't let me think enough. now that you mentioned water, I can see maybe more complex inner workings... but I ask anyone who would know better than I, do the calculations to decide the physics of water or the push and pull of air tax the CPU? I mean in a noticable amount.

the original idea actually had it being immaterial, along with undetectable. there were several critiques about you walking merrily along and suddenly you had fallen through a random block, also the aether lacked a basic block, like netherrack. so i made this block, and re purposed the immaterial feature to fluffcloud, and i imagined chamelia ore to fill the chameleon effect. chamelia ore is always pulsing slowly, with an effect turning on and off, to make it detectable. sorry i didn't include this in the earlier post, but i ran out of time.

An interesting way for it to be detectable would be if it glowed (much like redstone ore does when you hit it, but continually). Because the Aether is lit almost everywhere, you would need the dark-making materials to search for it effectively. This also makes a challenge for using it in traps or such in places that are dark.

I once saw a chicken push a creeper off of a cliff. I never looked at chickens the same way ever again. That is of course until I needed feathers.
I was bored at school and had an idea, it's not fleshed out in any way but it's still an idea. I was thinking, what if there was a kind of block that manipulated gravity? It could be used for lower gravity, higher gravity, zero gravity, reversed gravity, etc. Just an idea, so Grey, if you find it's interesting I hope that a suitable, balanced version can be thought of.

No, that's what would happen if they were planted in quicksoil. If anything Daey would be more likely to make them grow into Crystal formations.
