I think this is an awesome idea, although some of the specifics are a little weird. Personally, I think the gate should be made from gold blocks. Try getting THAT faster than you can get to the Nether. I don't like the super-bright day/daylight night or darkwood (maybe eternal day instead of the Nether's eternal night), and some of the minerals and mobs have mechanical issues. I think most wind/knockback attacks can be done with a Ghast-like projectile that does no damage to the player, though.
What I'm curious about is how distance traveled will work relative to the normal world. Sorry if it's already been brought up, but I can't be arsed to read a forty-eight page thread. I'd make it equal or less, because the speed of Nether travel is balanced by the danger of traveling there, and the Aether sounds a lot safer than a shadowy hellhole full of lava and flying artillery mobs.
It might be interesting to have that as an ability for Firehazurd's Dragon and have it so that in the Aether, since the Dragon is territorial, that it would fire a "teleport ball" at you that would move you to a random point on the map in order to move you out of its territory. This could end up being only a single map chunk away, or dozens of map chunks away.
I don't know, being transported far distances away in a land of flying islands could get really annoying, as you could get lost, not knowing what direction to go to get back, and thus going in the wrong direction, getting lost forever in the expanse of the Aether... yah. I think for a Dragon in the Aether it should be that Ice Dragon suggested a long time ago.

Just use the compass. I'm pretty sure I specifically stated that the compass would still be useable in the Aether. For that matter, you just find a spot with water and jump down out of the Aether into the overworld and use your compass from there.

True. How are you thinking it should work? Like it fires out a ball the size of a Ghast bomb with the teleportation ability? If so would it have a similar area of effect to a Ghast bomb? If so would the blocks in the area be teleported with you? Sorry to say but I still think the old Ice Dragon is the best Dragon idea for the Aether. Made a new mob should have the ability?

Effectively, yes.

Not certain, but it is a thought.

The ice dragon basically got merged into the cold cloud idea, and I was actually having issues with the dragon having an ice effect to begin with, because it didn't make sense from a "territorial" perspective. If something is territorial, it either wants to kill you for being in the area, or force you out of the area. Since philosophy of the aether is against direct harm, that leaves forcing the player out of the Dragon's territory, but the ice effects were something that make it HARDER for the player to get way, not easier.
The teleportation is a much more sensible ability for a "territorial" creature because it instantly removes whatever unwanted object it is from their territory, and the teleportaton ability makes more sense to be possessed by a mystical creature like a dragon.

Makes sense, but with this ability it would need a very desirable drop. Do you think if we PMed FireHazurd the Teleportation idea do you think he'd incorporate it into an Aether variant of his Dragon suggestion? Also, I think that instead of teleporting blocks it should just be able to destroy them.

Well, I think the obvious drop would be something that gives you the ability to set up and connect 2 portals that attach directly to each other instead of needing to work through the Nether.

Yah I guess that would be good, as it would allow for Fast travel even in Nether and Aether. What should this dragon be called, and what kind of dragon should it be?

Well, I don't think Firehazurd has confirmed a dragon variant for the Aether, although I suggested it to him and he was talking about how he was thinking how epic it would be for a Dragon vs. Aerwhale fight. In turn, I made a very crappy drawing in Gimp depicting such a battle. I would show it to you, but it would probably hurt your eyes.

go look at the opening post. I've already added it as a placeholder. Obviously it wont look right as JUST a face, but as soon as I thought of that, I couldn't think of any other face for the sentry to have.
whatever the dragon will be,it hink it could be a somewhat rare spawn and if u get near it it spawns u back to ure span point. it would make acceditly falling to ure death when trying to get back a less of a threat.it would also allow the player tyo use this mob as a form of fast travel to get out of nether fast.

Eh, I'm pretty sure that the dragon is going to be made by Firehazurd if anyone, he seemed to like the idea of Dragons vs. Aerwhales, and also said he may make a variant for his Luck Dragon.
It's attack is a blue ball (Ghast bomb sized) with a rippling effect, and produces light. When it hits something, it causes a blue wave to come from the point of impact, and move out for about 2 blocks and disappears once it reaches that size (about 1 second). When you are hit with the ball, you teleport a random distance in any direction, but you have to materialize on a block, not in midair. However, the closer you where to the actually point of impact, you have a higher chance of going further away (Example: You are hit by the ball itself, your face is the point of impact, you get teleported 10 blocks away. It hits the ground and you just touch the ripple, you get teleported 3 blocks away).
To perform it's attack, it opens it's mouth, while a smaller version of the ball forms in it's mouth, growing bigger and then firing (takes about 2 seconds) 3 balls, one after the other, with about .5 seconds between each ball is fired. Not all of them are fired at the same spot, as the dragon is still aiming at you while firing, and if you are moving, the balls would keep hitting close to you.
An idea I had, was if you were hit by multiple balls at the same time, it would have a different effect, like say, one hits you and you get teleported, two hit you and you get teleported to one place, and your armour gets teleported to another, three and you, your armour and your inventory get teleported to all different places. This would encourage you to get out of the way as soon as possible.
The Dragon would drop 1-2 Teeth, which would be able to make (all names and recipes are a work in progress):
Dragon Ring:
[] [>>-i>] [] []
[] []
[>>-i>] = Tooth
The Dragon Ring would allow you to teleport to the linked "Waypoint". You simply take out the Ring, right click and you are teleported to a Waypoint. To link a ring and a Waypoint, take out the ring and left click the desired Waypoint. Before it is linked to a Waypoint, it is linked to spawn.
Waypoint:
[] [] []
[] [] [] [>>-i>]
The Waypoint is used as a receiver for the Dragon Ring. Once placed, it is assigned a number (the first one you put down would be 1, the second one would be 2, etc). The Ring assigned to a Waypoint would have the corresponding number in the bottom right corner of the picture for it. When a waypoint is placed and broken, it will have a chance of either drop the Tooth, or nothing.
Now, these two together would act as on the go, one-way teleporters, for if you want to go to a specific place quickly, or get out of somewhere as fast as possible (you're near death in a cave with Creepers come towards you, so you teleport away to your home where you set up a Waypoint, saving your life and your stuff). Now for some two-way teleportation:
Dragon Gate:
The Gate is not crafted, but made like an Aether or Nether portal, but made out of Quick Soil, and is activated using a Tooth, destroying the Tooth in the process. When this is done, you will be asked to name the Gate. To link two gates together, give them the same name. If a third one is attempted to be linked to the same system, it will not allow it.
These good ideas?

How to not die in a cave
That stops being inhibitive and becomes prohibitive. The idea is simply to create staging, not to make it impossible to get to the Aether.
