the Nether is an alternate dimension, not underground the Minecraft earth.
You clearly read the title and posted your uninformed opinion. So, kudos to that.

While some might argue that Nether is not physically located below the Overworld, and therefor Aether should not be physically above the Overworld, this issue can rendered moot simply by not assuming a physical connection is needed for the player to drop into the Overworld when falling from Aether.
OP mentioned (quoted above) that the Aether doesn't necessarily have to be "over" the Overworld as everyone already knows the Nether is not "below" the Overworld. But the concept of looking down and seeing Earth and possibly falling and reloading Earth is an awesome concept which you clearly did not get far enough to read.
Hey Grey? For the Sentries, what design were you thinking they would look like, those Beamos (the Zelda things) or the Lion statues? As another Sentry thing, do you think a good ability, (instead of destroying blocks) that they could teleport things with their beams? If you were hit it'd teleport you, if it hits a block, it teleports that block? The rules would be like, it would teleport the things a certain distance away, but within a certain radius, so that it isn't teleported one block away, or teleport you onto another island. It would also not be able to be teleported to an area too close to the temple, and would not be able to teleport something into mid air, only onto any side of a visible block to the Sentry, because to teleport you, it'd hit you with the beam and then fire the beam to were it teleports you, which would be a random block within the needed area (meaning not too close to the original spot, not too far from the original spot, or too close to the temple).
I honestly can't decide yet. I may have to see if Firehazurd or Soul Duck Cake have any designs that might inspire something. I definitely don't want to go with the LoZ Sentries, and while I'm leaning a little towards the Lion shaped ones, I'm just not sure they'll be practical as an immobile enemy that can track your position.
yes, that was discussed already, except then all you'd need to do is walk behind the thing. It would be weird for the thing to be able to turn to face you. More likely, if we went with the Lion, it would be a beam that comes from the mouth, and effectively the base of the lion would have no specific direction, and the head would be able to rotate freely around the base.

I would find it weird for the head to be able to rotate the entire way around. I would think the entire statue turning would be better. Also, what do you think about my teleportation beam thing? Is it good, bad, too complicated?
EDIT: Hmmm, Andrew's idea isn't bad, but they'd need to be made really good at keeping you back so you can't get the back easily.
the left one cant see you but the top right one can so long as it is facing either East, South or West
also you might have it that sentries can see through glass and they could break glass with every shot they make out of their gun or blaster or whatever they have
so ideally in a temple that looks like this the safe routes would be on the left or right sides, after taking out the sentries you can open the treasures
ehhh I was also thinking (yeah, might be suggested so dont rip my head off all you trolls >>) about a mob called a jack-in-a-box. i know there are mimics but a jack (short name for it) would have a clown giggle when you activate it then it would explode, a shorter radius then a creeper but it would do more damage
this enemy however can be caught out.
the default chest has a silver latch on it: (as you can see in this icon)
so the jack has a gold latch which will help you decide on its true identity
these die when mined, they mine just like a normal chest but they explode only when opened. mining them drops a sentry maybe, your own personal sentry, or maybe a just some gold or whatever you would like
the gaps behind them is where you can get to, the way to get there is to block there beams with your own blocks, place them down to block their atacks
walk around the back of it and bam, btw sentries shouldnt be able to see through other sentries and also they should be the height of a human
That would be too simple though, which is why I pointed out that their beams would be able to disintegrate blocks that you place. I'm thinking that it should be more like mazelike trenches that you have to work your way through and use as cover.
What might be reasonable though, is since Temples would be made from mossy cobblestone that placeing mossy cobblestone blocks wouldn't set off their beams, but if you tried breaking the mossy cobblestone you just placed, they'd start zapping you again.
On top of this, crystal blocks would be resistant to disintegration, though the sentries would still try to disintegrate the crystal when you place it, but if you managed to get a set of two crystal blocks it would redirect the beam, at which point it could end up redirecting the beam and disintegrate mossy cobblestone, at which point any other nearby sentries would turn on the one that had been firing the beam that disintegrated the mossy cobblestone resulting in it being temporarily disabled.

I was actually thinking that, I mean the whole disintegrate blocks and redirecting lazors
I was also thinking, well hey, why not make sentries drop fragments that can be used to make a sentry?
to do so you might have to redirect a beam into the back of a sentry
then make the head and boy like so:
- fragment -diamond or life gem which is the weak spot of a sentry
head:
body:
taking into consideration that these are powerful defense systems, they would kill mobs but the drops would burn so meh

But prehaps there should be Aether Biomes?
Say, a Forest Type, and Plain Type and a Tundra Type? Just an Idea.

maybe the only way to kill one it to hit its back, and their might be some sort of life gem on the back or a heart or something

From what i've read through skimming however is impressive, hopefully this is implemented.
yeah, just wanted to explain this a little better, sentries shouldnt be able to see you if you hide behind one

the left sentry cant sense you when you hide behind another sentry, however if this were to occur...
