...Secondly, hover glass can only connect to hover glass? Or can it connect to other blocks? Maybe make it have a slight purple or blue tinge to it.
but then how would you make it float if you cant connect it to anything else?
He said CONNECT, not PLACE. You would still be able to place hoverglass on other blocks, but it would only CONNECT to other hoverglass IF hoverglass gets used.
Also, floatsand has absolutely no connection to how airships function or anything to do with light, so there really aren't any issues with moving lightsources.
I think he meant if there's a torch, lantern or whatever light source ends up being most used is on the block, what would happen.
I think maybe torches could be placed on them, but the moving light issue might be a problem however some one made a mod that allows moving light which is awesome, I am using it now in my game and it works fine

well I used this moving light mod that allows light to be sourced from torches when held, its pretty neat because monsters cant spawn near you either when using it
I like the idea of another realm separate from the Nether, and have three quick comments:
1) I don't like making the Aether portal out of something other than obsidian, and think it should just be an obsidian portal with another means of opening it to the Aether (plant a sapling within it, I dunno). I know that everyone who plays Minecraft probably reads a guide or the wiki within the first ten minutes of playing, but at some point I think we want this to be naturally intuitive without one. Plus, I think it's always best to give existing materials new uses before adding new ones. Considering how simple the Nether is I don't think people would get that overwhelmed by being able to access both at the start of the game.
2) Ice forming at night is cool, and I like the idea of the Aether having extreme swings between night and day as a parallel to the Nether's total lack of a day and night cycle. Instead of day and "day-er," night could be like perpetual sunset and mobs would freeze, while the day could be of slightly greater brightness but exposure to direct sunlight would burn you with minor damage (not actual burning, though). To keep players from immediately burning upon entry, the game would generate a giant tree over the first portal entering the Aether.
3) I think it might be a little niche to have darkstone impede melting (I personally wouldn't care since it would turn back to ice normally within a short while anyway), or to have "dark" materials in general--just because the Nether has brightstone doesn't mean there needs to be a direct parallel to it. But there could be some interesting ways of creating darkness. Instead of darktorches, regular torches could create darkness if placed within the Aether (they'd appear dark in the inventory too while there, so players would kind of be prompted to try placing a torch and figure it out upon seeing that). Again night there would be like sunset, so visibility during the night without torches wouldn't be much of an issue.

...the thing with the portal is that to go to the Aether you need to go to the nether first and you will need a diamond pickaxe to mine obsidian so you will have to find diamond first... so to get to The Aether it means you have to get lots and lots of lightsone dust but you need 9 of them to make 1 lightstone but if you break it you only get 1 bit of dust from it and i have experimented and found that 1 stack of lightsone dust (64 pieces) creates under 8 lightstone blocks... so it will take longer to make the portal also wouldn't you think that that a light type realm that is like heaven (if you believe in it or not) that the portal should look sort of like the pearly white gates?... so your saying you should be able to make a portal to The Aether/heaven/a light cloudy place with a dark (almost black) block but putting a sapling in it instead... kind of a stupid idea... but i do like the fact that if the light eventually burns you then there is a tree above your portal... so... i think I've said enough...

You can't plant a sapling on obsidian, you'd end up with a black block on what is otherwise a fairly bright realm, glowstone already is an existing material, and that implies/depends on the idea that nothing will ever change about the Nether.

No. The Aether is supposed to be a Heavenly alternative to the Hellish Nether. You don't even take damage like that while in the Nether, so there's no way in hell it would be appropriate for the Aether.
3) I think it might be a little niche to have darkstone impede melting (I personally wouldn't care since it would turn back to ice normally within a short while anyway), or to have "dark" materials in general--just because the Nether has brightstone doesn't mean there needs to be a direct parallel to it. Darkstone wouldn't just "impede" freezing, it would actively induce it, both in the Aether, as well as in the Overworld. Having torches suddenly become "darkness producing torches" makes no sense at all.
I like the general idea of an Aether realm, but I'd be more prone to let Notch decide what goes in there. Regardless of what mobs/materials he decides on, I liked a few specific ideas an awful lot. I would be very happy if they were implemented into the Aether.
Summarizing GreyAcumen's essential ideas:
Lightstone Dust must be gathered and formed into a portal. Water activates it. The Aether is a world of Light, Air, Ice, and Water that exists "above" the Overworld (contrasting with the "hellish" Nether of Darkness, Rock, Fire, and Lava that exists "below" the Overworld). It is always day. Lava cannot be placed in Aether, just as water cannot be placed in the Nether. Quicksoil. It should acts as an opposite to slowstone, making the player walk faster Crystal. Can redirect light (that would be nice. Not essential, but very nice.) Gliders. These would be nice, in general. I've always wanted a parachute or something to get down from mountains. Phygs. They drop feathers when hit, drop meat when killed, and can even be saddled to be ridden. They are SO cute. I must have them.
The above list is what I consider the cream of the crop. After that, I say Notch comes up with everything else.
I really like Theo's idea. The Nether is supposed to be the interdimensional nexus, not the overworld. So why not?

When I said "I dunno," I meant "I don't know" as in "I'm not really sure that's a good idea." I know putting a sapling within it is stupid. I was just trying to say it would have some kind of activation other than lighting it on fire should the portal still be made of obsidian. If the portal absolutely must be made of brightstone, then I would still vouch for making it activated by flint and steel.

Notch has said he's planning to steer away from Christian mythology and create his own mythos, and I think that's really good. Personally, I think actively trying to pitch the Aether as "heaven" and the Nether as "hell" is rather stale and unoriginal. So if you don't like the burning, fine. But it's lame to say it shouldn't happen because of what the Nether is like. They should be treated as separate entities because should the Aether be added it would not be to draw them as Heaven and Hell.

Oh, so darkness producing blocks make more sense then. The Nether has slightly different rules for the laws of physics, so I figured the Aether could too. The way things are now torches would be totally useless and torches are awesome.
But again, I realize that one's a bit of a stretch. As with the obsidian portal, it's just a suggestion to give an existing material a little more use before resorting to something else. Darkstone seems far too close to obsidian.
Did I seriously say darkstone? That's supposed to be darkwood, and I don't see why you think darkwood would have anything to do with obsidian, they don't have even a single property in common except for having a dark texture.

And Fire. Don't forget that fire wouldn't work either.

Sorry, I admit I glossed over a few things and somewhere I decided darkwood was darkstone. But that was the property I was talking about, them both being dark rock. But since I realize now that it's not darkstone, that's irrelevant now. Still don't like darkwood, though. Has no practical use outside the Aether.

Water evaporates because the Nether is extremely hot. Lava may solidify, but fire can exist despite a cold environment. Disallowing it seems arbitrary.
Also after rereading the part about darkwood, I'm concerned about where it says "overbright" lighting. You say it doesn't make sense for the Aether's environment to be able to harm your character, but I think that should extend to the player, too. Having my eyes burned out (or just having anything being highly unpleasant to look at) definitely fits into the category of "un-fun."
Has anyone ever read the book "Airborne" by Kenneth Opel? In his book there was this new kind of animal called a Cloud Cat, that was baisically a white panther with hollow bones like a bird and it's fore legs were more like wings. They fly their entire lives and are very hard to spot in the clouds because of their fluffy white coats. They might not make bad mobs for this Aether, however there may be legal complications...
As a mob I would imagine them as hostile, ustilizing pack hunting and ambush tactics on players.
He said CONNECT, not PLACE. You would still be able to place hoverglass on other blocks, but it would only CONNECT to other hoverglass IF hoverglass gets used.
