i voted an option that asked me to comment on this. so uh, i guess i'll just go down the compendium in the OP commenting on stuff.
accessing the aether: the only thing i would suggest here is that the portal be constructed from something other than lightstone.. mainly because the dust it drops feels like something that should be used in crafting, rather than the block being the end in itself. i think it should be made from a block type found only in the nether that pops as a whole block - a sort of nether version of obsidian. maybe marble could be found at the very high and/or very low levels of the nether? or some other block type if that's not nether-ish enough. i don't really like the idea of using an airship. not that airships shouldn't be in the game but that using them to get to the aether would be kinda like building a ladder to heaven.
crystal: the whole percentage drop system for this with glass as an alternate drop and being different for specific high end tools seems overcomplicated and frustrating to me. i'd just say you need one of these tools (diamond, gold or enchanted depending on which 'tech path' you want this material to encourage) and leave it at that. i mean diamond itself is one of the most useful materials in the game and even that has a 100% drop rate if you use a good enough tool. also i'm not sure what its use is supposed to be - is this natural lighting just extending the range of an already existing light source? that'd be a pretty cool way to light a room. also as for the 'light/motion sensor' crafting purpose, i imagine it being something that activates a redstone circuit, but in response to movement within a certain range? which can be directed by blocking some sides of it with dirt or whatever? that's sort of how i'm imagining it.
darkwood: love the idea, the nether definitely needs more block types. not too keen on the crafting uses suggested here though. i guess if the brightness in the aether is that much of a problem then it's useful, but it's really, i dunno, stylized? i'd kinda like something more intuitive even if it is from an alternate dimension. this stuff would theoretically be available by the ton in the nether, so it'd be kind of weird if it served such a niche purpose. can't imagine it having much use in the overworld either, so unless you planned to spend massive amounts of time in the aether, it'd go to waste. but maybe you're onto something by trying to design alternate dimensions that actually encourage you to stay there awhile. i dunno. my first thought on what to use it for would be as a more efficient fuel source than coal... not as exciting as it should be when you finally get to the nether after all your hours of digging and building. ideally these new materials should sort of strike a balance between the excitement/exotic-ness of the dark torch idea and something more useful in the overworld.
um so yeah... i liked most of the ideas. these were the only ones i can think of comments for right now. my main complaint in general is that a lot of this stuff put together sounds like a different game. nothing about the nether feels un-minecraft - just kinda bare, and hopefully it'll get filled out over time. i would like that and any additional dimensions to be cool and somewhere you could spend a lot of time if you wanted, but it should still feel like minecraft.
anyway i know i'm not exactly brimming with creativity in these comments so take them with a pinch of salt.
Ok I really love the idea and all, but I think it has gone a little over the top. In my opinion the regular world should be the main source of blocks and building, etc. If the Nether and the Aether have as many new blocks and mobs as proposed it kind of takes away from the original minecraft world. Notch's current version of the Nether having only two new mob types and three new block types is a good balance and I think the Aether should have a similar balance. Definitely a needed addition however.

I looked out upon this fledgling world, a land of opportunity, and I conquered it.
I modified Soul Duck Cake's mockups for the Sheepuff to bring it closer in line to my vision. I altered the skin tone to be more pink (instead of the yellow that makes it look jaundiced) and I made the "puffed" version a bit more extreme (though it doesn't look totally right, since I slapped it together in photoshop and didn't do it in an actual 3d modeling program. Click on the images to see the original mockups by Soul Duck Cake that I modified them from.

Keep in mind. Aether is supposed to be opposite Nether, so it stands to reason that the portal to get to teh Aether would be an "opposite" block to Obsidian. Consider the features of Obsidian vs Glowstone:
Obsidian: Dark material, Hard to break, mineable only with diamond pickaxe, once mined is easy to gather
vs
Glowstone: Light material, Easy to break, mineable using anything, once mined must be crafted at a 9:1 gather build ratio.
i don't really like the idea of using an airship. not that airships shouldn't be in the game but that using them to get to the aether would be kinda like building a ladder to heaven.
I don't like the idea of airships traveling between Aether and Overworld either. That's why it's in italics and only mentioned as a proposed method.

I think you're right that it should be a straight "this tool can, this tool can't" but don't think if it like mining ores, think of it like mining flint from gravel, or saplings from leaf blocks, those don't have a 100% drop rate.
also i'm not sure what its use is supposed to be - is this natural lighting just extending the range of an already existing light source? that'd be a pretty cool way to light a room. also as for the 'light/motion sensor' crafting purpose, i imagine it being something that activates a redstone circuit, but in response to movement within a certain range? which can be directed by blocking some sides of it with dirt or whatever? that's sort of how i'm imagining it.
I need to polish the description for Crystal. What it does is focus light into beams, redirect those beams and magnify the intensity. Once light has been magnified to a certain level, the light will then begin to have heat properties that can do burning damage to the player (though they wont catch on fire in the Aether)

Darkwood doesn't only have light absorption properties, but also has HEAT absorption properties, so it can freeze water into ice as well as freezing cold cloud into its solid form even in the Overworld.

If you treat Crystal as a variant of glass, and you treat cold cloud as a variant of cloud, and keep in mind that Darkwood is proposed primarily as a Nether block, with Sticky sand and Rubber also being suggested for the Nether, then that's only 4 blocks that are specifically introduced by the Aether vs the Netherrack, Glowstone(also rarely in Aether), Sticky sand (replacing soul sand), Darkwood(also rarely in Aether), and Rubber.
The Nether was introduced to add a new element to gameplay: fast travel via portals. Granted, it didn't work out too well, but the concept remains. What new element or dimension does the Aether add? I'm not counting new blocks in here, unless you want to make the case that the block itself makes a new dimension.

Manly blood is both highly acidic AND highly basic, but I'm glad to see you're paying attention.
Personally, I can see it being used for structures that seem larger on the inside than the outside. Sure, it requires loading the new dimension, but it allows for a larger area to build in, as well as a great place for that massive castle//tower construction project, while only having a small 'footprint' (namely the portals to the entrances and walls around them, possibly a mockup of the area) in the 'Overworld'.
Just a use I see for it.

Very probably insane, so don't mind me too much when I ramble.
You can pretty much do that just as effectively with a Nether Portal, provided you don't mind the view (or not alternately not having windows)

Personally I think the "fast travel" idea was just a conceptual excuse to justify the question of; "Okay, so we can make a portal to hell, but who in their right minds would WANT to do that?" bu if that's not good enough, you could instead focus on how Aether brings the ability to grow crystal trees, which can't be done in the overworld since it lacks daeylight, it also brings the ability to not catch on fire.
to be totally honest i'm really not too fussed about the inclusion of an anti nether. I've not really been too interested in the nether either... has a lot of fans though so I think it would be ok as a mod...
if it is created I don't think it should be titled the aether either ,if you want to know about the true "aether" check out the research done by the russian scientist dr. n.a. kozyrev.
maybe just call it "upper world" or "the light realm".
It is a NAME.
And the term itself goes back a LOT further than some russian scientist. It refers to "the personification of the "upper sky", space and heaven, in Greek mythology" which is COMPLETELY applicable to the theme of this realm, and brings a parallel to the spelling of the two realms: Same number of letters, only one letter difference, and "A"(first letter in "All") and "N"(first letter in "Nil"{None/Nothing}) are even both letters that are "sharp" (lacking curves) and are comprised of the same number of lines. There is no name that is more perfectly suited for this realm, nor is it likely that a term even could be INVENTED that could be better suited.
I know my reaction is a little over the top, but my god, the number of layered reasons supporting the name just run so deep that I'm starting to wonder if this is some sort of fated destiny of minecraft.
Being a "stickler" that usually implies that you are insisting on something that isn't severely important, but STILL MAKES SENSE. The game itself doesn't NEED to have connections to greek philosophy for the term to still be applicable. The "logic" you are using here makes as much sense as telling NASA that they shouldn't have named the space shuttle missions "Apollo" since Apollo is the greek god of light and sun, and not the moon. Or saying that you can't ford a river because you're driving a Toyota instead of a Ford. It's completely absurd and arbitrary, you don't just remove parts of the english/human language and claim them as invalid just because they aren't relevant to your personal field of interest.
The key points of the term "Aether" is not "Greek Philosphy" it is "Upper Sky" and "space/heaven" and guess what? this realm is a place that exists in the sky that is "above" the sky already existing in the Overworld, which makes it "upper" sky, and it's meant to be an opposite of the "hellish" Nether, making it "heavenly" you can't get more accurate than exact 1:1 wording of the definition.
Your entire arguments essentially consists of "I like this scientist that no one else has heard of, so I'm going to claim that he has a copywrite on the term 'Aether' and any other way the term is used doesn't count." Sorry, doesn't work that way.
Also, an anagram is a rearrangement of letters from one word to form another, going from Aether to Nether involves absolutely no rearrangement of any parts of either word, unless you want to switch the two "e"s with each other. So they aren't nearly anagrams at all.
lol good point. If you aren't going to mess with it anyway, why talk about it at all?
I still want it to be an actual physical area that is in the normal world, just REALLY far above it, mostly because it opens up a lot of possibilities. It it easier to make it so your character will end up in the normal world if you fall out of the aether, and allows for the possibility of creatures from the aether making their way down to the normal world from time to time.
It also make it possible for it ot be reachable by airships, if they are implemented.
(quick question: was I the first to mention it being reachable by airship? I can't remember. I don't think it was me though.)
But wouldnt that mean you wouldnt need a portal to get back into the Aether.
I dont that that would be so great, I think that overworld sky level should block everything from entering the Aether however when in the Aether the floor level should allow everything out of the Aether. (When saying that I remembered that bible story about the Tower to Heaven, that is exactly what we dont want in the form of air ship or tower alike)
Also, on that note I think that every mob that travels into the portal (Either the Nether or the Aether) should actually teleport to the portal that is connected to it.
Mobs that teleport shouldnt wander too far however and I believe that they should all turn neutral, curious (Maybe follow the player?) and clueless when wandering but aggressive when provoked.
And last thing I will say is that when you crash into the floor level with a glider you should fall to earth without being attached to the actual glider, so you dont really get a safe trip down. However when you land you can still retrieve your glider from where ever it landed.
Good idea, but I don't see any good reason to have rubber and sticky sand.
Sticky sand is just a matter of giving "soul/slow sand" more features, and i think those features would give the player more ways to use it, (some of which would be beneficial for use in the Aether) while at the same time being more of a detriment when the player was walking over it and such.
I think I may just cut rubber out. Sticky sand and rubber had been suggested together, so I just sorta added one while I added the other.

Nah, I dont care for natural rubber, I would rather gather the materials and make it
I was just more so wanting the materials to be found in the aether, not a natural block and such
however if you keep the rubber material idea you should at least keep a small description on it
