This is an amazing idea and I call tell you put a lot of work into the original post. The design is perfect as well are most of the ideas, I can already imagine what it would look like and it's amazing. The only thing that I don't like is the name, "Aether" is too much of a Nether spin-off, I feel like this should be it's own independent thing.
as the title says, it is a "Anti-Nether Realm", thus it is the opposite of the Nether, and so has to be a spin-off of the Nether. This is something you can not deny.
Since, basicly, there are like NO stable blocks in the Aether how would you stand in the Aether?Would you stand on your frickin' portal?!I seriously don't get the concept of making a "Heavenly" realm so....deadly!

Grats, you took a very useful concept and made it stupid and pointless.

The Nether (Also referred to as "The Nexus" in Notch's Blog and was previously known as Hell and The Slip)
Not quite, the Nether is somewhat like a "Hell". Therefor the Anti-Nether would be some type of a "Heaven".
I love this idea.
Full support!
Maybe, this is for both Aether and Nether, maybe there could be a center, so to speak, and at the center, there was a ball. In the Nether it would be black, or a black/red changing color, and had black or red beams going up, down, left, right, side and side. And it is the heart of then the Nether. (A white/blue ball in the Aether, with white or blue lights shooting out the saem as the Nethers) You can mine it with a diamond pick, takes twice as long as and when it is mined, it can be take down to earth and be placed. It makes a radius twenty blocks out oof thast area. So, if it was the Aethers, that part of the world would grow things from there, but it also spawns the Aethers monsters there and like, not a little, but a lot. It gives the chance for the world to have new mobs, and you have some area of that place. That block is timed though, only lasts a minecraft day. Then that peice vanishes literally, and leaves a hole in the ground.
This could be edited though
Dude... just gather the Aether blocks you want and add them in yourself.

So is the siltt still floating around or has it faded to a mere memory?
It seemed to be going pretty well when first mentioned....../
I still remember it, just that it's on the backburners right now. It's not terribly complex, nor is there much that can really be added to it. So it'll just sit for now.

Please do a google search for the term Aether. It can stand on its own, but compliments the Nether as well. The best solution is generally the one that works no matter which criteria you are judging it by.
Actually, now that I think about it, I'm fairly certain the Nether was a term that was originally created by morphing the term of "Aether" so that is sounded more dastardly.
It's been suggested, and I personally think that the idea is rather dumb, no offense intended. I can understand the logic to it, but there's just no reasonable way to balance something like that. Clouds are currently serving the purpose of "Aether liquid" and can even freeze to create clouds that can be walked on (tenuously, since they'll "melt" into regular cloud that you can fall through after a couple seconds of touching it before re"freezing" a bit later)
You really should add the "failed" suggestions and "back-burner" suggestions to the op (with a note saying what they are) so that people don't keep adding the same idea over and over again.

I once saw a chicken push a creeper off of a cliff. I never looked at chickens the same way ever again. That is of course until I needed feathers.

That doesn't seem like a bad idea, but I need to get the "official" stuff finished off first, so I'm going to shelve that idea for now and come back to it later.

Jusat an idea how about parachutes so that deadly fall isn't so deadly.
I had actually been planning on adding that to the opening post. I've just been working out what disadvantages it should have to keep from being overpowered. Probably something where it has 50% chance of failure, or if you're going too fast when you use it, it'll halt your fall, but will then break so you resume falling. Something like that. Either that or Ghast & Aerwhale bladders can be used directly as a balloon to slow your descent, or perhaps Empty Air Envelopes from my Airships idea could be used directly that way.
Either way, I have a number of options to consider for this.
Of course, the current alternative is getting a boat out and riding it as you fall so you don't take damage no matter how far you fall from.
Meh. I would rather have the aether be a separate area that resides above the normal world that would be reachable by airship, or by building up to it ( which isn't recommended, since the islands move around), but I DO think that if it IS reached by portal, it should only be 1 material.
First, songstone would be havested in songstone dust (2 per block), and filling a crafting bench with those, and a hollow center (like a furnace) would give you the block.
Second, if you make sticks from darkwood, and use them to make a torch, it would produce a light-reducing torch, which would be helpful during the Daey, and also add challenge if you use it in the normal world.
Third, ice in the Aether should be more clear than ice in the normal world.
Finally, I have a question. If you planted a sapling from the normal world into the Aether, would it still have a chance of growing crystals. (Oh, in my opinion, those should be not solid blocks, but have the texture of blue leaves

did you mean a sapling from the Aether in the normal world having a chance of growing crystals?
As a relatively new Minecrafter, here is my take on all this:
The Aether: I love the concept. i picture it similar to that part in Avatar with the floating mountains. I like the aerwhales and phigs and the windstone thing and the sentries. dont like the spets guys (the ones that swallow you). if there is no floor then we definitely need gliders. the idea of night being bright and day being super bright i think has potential but i would have to see it in action before deciding yay or nay. I like the idea of a glowstone portal with water (opposite of an obsidian portal with fire for the Nether) and the properties of not being able to light a fire in Aether (just like not being able to pour water in the Nether)
HOWEVER. Before we can have an Aetherland, the Netherland needs to be changed/improved. It needs to be more useful. Because right now here is how the portal system works: You start in the world, find diamond and obsidian (time consuming and full of danger), make a portal to the Nether. You go to the Nether and use a stone pick to gather easily available Glowstone to make a portal to the Aether? See what i mean by the Nether needs work? you pretty much only go there to kill gouls and get glowstone. If the only reason for going to Nether is to get Lightstone for a portal to Aether...you get my point (i hope).
So yes, i want an Aetherland. But first i want a more useful Netherland.

No, islands don't move around. Only the floatsand moves around, and that's only when it's hit.

the aether sounds like an awesome idea, but pretty hard for notch to make. I hope he does, though. I would love to see it.
Also, for the aether portals, how about lightstone & marble, in an alternating patern?
Why should the Aether portal be so much more complicated than a Nether Portal?

I have a few ideas for the Aether.
First, songstone would be havested in songstone dust (2 per block), and filling a crafting bench with those, and a hollow center (like a furnace) would give you the block.
At LEAST 4 dust per block. That way it's a 2:1 ratio between blocks broken to blocks gathered. I wouldn't go any less than that
Second, if you make sticks from darkwood, and use them to make a torch, it would produce a light-reducing torch, which would be helpful during the Daey, and also add challenge if you use it in the normal world.
Did you honestly think that DARKwood torches were going to make light?
Third, ice in the Aether should be more clear than ice in the normal world.
Why? I see no reason to make an extra block for that.
Finally, I have a question. If you planted a sapling from the normal world into the Aether, would it still have a chance of growing crystals.
Aether saplings are no different than normal saplings. It's only when they grow into trees during Daeylight that they become crystal trees.
(Oh, in my opinion, those should be not solid blocks, but have the texture of blue leaves
Crystals don't grow exclusively as leaf blocks (though they do act similarly for determining withering) More likely, they'd look similar to glass blocks with the center of each block clear, but with the edges frosted or something.

Time consuming, certainly, but not that much more dangerous than any exploration of the overworld.
You go to the Nether and use a stone pick to gather easily available Glowstone to make a portal to the Aether?
1) you don't need a pick to gather Glowstone, you can gather it by hand. 2) Gathering 12-40 glowstone dust might not be too challenging, but gathering enough to make an Aether Portal (10 blocks x 9 dust = 90 glowstone blocks that must be broken) isn't terribly easy with a bunch of Ghasts firing at you.
See what i mean by the Nether needs work? you pretty much only go there to kill gouls and get glowstone. If the only reason for going to Nether is to get Lightstone for a portal to Aether...you get my point (i hope).
There's also Netherrack to gather for making continual lightsources (even more useful once torches are made limited) Soul Sand is also there, though it's functional uses are limited.
So yes, i want an Aetherland. But first i want a more useful Netherland.
P.S. I'm addicted to minecraft and i love it.
If you noticed, the Aether block ideas actually includes a few blocks proposed for addition to the Nether as well.
the nether does need more going on in it, but i'm sure that will come. at least i hope so. i figured the nether was put in the game in its current state to test it before adding more stuff. new mob types should be easy enough...
