just because I said whoops ass doesnt mean it has to attack you directly, I mean this is not even my idea, its my brothers and so I dont know what he wants for it, but I promised I would work on it :/
anyway, this guy is the guardian of the aether, it does have some rights to whack at you a few times, besides the aether is peaceful and neutral mobs, the Goliath is just another neutral mob
It would be cool if we had a different kind of portal to the heavens with floating islands and stuff. That is, if there's no practical way to implement them [floating islands] into the existing infinite world.
Also, falling from those hypothetical floating islands would cause you to "warp" back to the normal world, to an altitude way above buildable height (so you can't literally build to the heavens). That means you'd survive if you land in the ocean. If you hit the ground and die, you or someone else will be able to collect your inventory. It would also allow you to make a really fancy transportation method of falling into your base.
Also, this:

First is simply to reach this place via cannon. Hop in a cannon, light it up, and get blasted into the sky. Okay, maybe not as simple as one TNT, but in that kind of way. Portals seems like a very dark and mysterious thing, while Aether/floating island world should be very light and lighthearted. It also fits in with the dropping out of the sky to appear in your corresponding space on earth (alive in all cases, mind you.
Of course, the best option is to use a portal, but blasting yourself into the sky should be another option, since we expect to be able to do the opposite of falling from the sky. It'd be silly and dangerous (you'll probably die), but really awesome at the same time. If Notch ever implements the Aether, coding this in would simply be the reverse of falling from the Aether, with momentum conserved of course.
It's a similar feature to wearing a pumpkin on your head :|

The Goliath idea made me think. What about a worm that is a very rare spawn that will "eat" the island it spawns on?
Interesting.... Are you thinking giant worm, or something else? Because, while they don't necessaraly eat clouds, Skyfish would be interesting: http://www.xenophilia.com/zb0001.htm
Well something like that, except that it would eat blocks, possibly only the "softer" ones. It could spawn during daytime and slowly eat its way through the islands. possibly fly from island to island and burn up during the Daeytime.
The Goliath idea made me think. What about a worm that is a very rare spawn that will "eat" the island it spawns on?
I think a worm like that would really be something better for the Nether. As amusing as it might be to eat the island out from under it, the consistent "hellstone" in the Nether would give a simple environment for the "nether worm" to prefer to habituate, and it would be in ready supply.
I'm imagining a big floating eyeball with squarish magnifying lens floating above it like a halo, but that's just a description I cobbled together just now.
Actually I rather like the Chinese Lion Guardians. You could have one beam that comes from whatever their paw is resting on, and one beam from their mouth, one of which handles disintegrating blocks the player places, and one that handles knocking the player back and blinding them. Or it could just be that the one is responsible for disintegrating blocks and the other is responsible for blinding&knocking the player back when they try to break blocks or go into "off-limits" areas.
And the two new ones from the Nether:
Zombie Pig-men
Ghasts
With the Aether we have proposed:
Swets
Zephyr
Aerwhale
Phyg
Sheepuff
and tons of others I've forgotten that have been suggested
Point being, I think you guys are getting WAY to creative with the names.
We don't call the Creeper the "ssssssSSSPLODER", we call it the Creeper.
We don't need to have really weird names that are incredibly out there to title new enemies.
With the exception of the Zephyr (which actually fits since it's just a puff of air), if you were told just the name of the enemy, you'd know what everything in the Overworld was (atleast that the Creepers are silent), you'd know what everything in the Nether was (atleast "Ghasts were probably ghastly"), but you'd know next to nothing about any Aether mob.
Aerwhale maybe because it's blunt and pretty damn close to just a "prefix mob", but "What's a Phyg? It sounds like the fruit.", "What's a sheepuff? those giant elephants like in FF10?", "What's a swet? That sounds like something your body naturally does, not something that has a mind of it's own."
I could almost guarantee you that should the Aether be released to the masses, nicknames would take over "your names" as the norm.
Phygs would quickly become "Flying Pigs"
Swets would quickly become "Blue Slimes"
and Sheepuffs would probably become something like "Aether Sheep" or "Floaty Sheep" ("Sheep that puff up" wouldn't be far behind but that'd probably become "Puffy Sheep" instead of "sheepuff")
Not only do I have time on my hands, but I have absolutely no idea on how to work google sketchup
I screwed up a lot on this model buut this is what goliath is planning to look like, I only like pixel art or sketching not 3D models, so sorry if it looks like crap :/
the black stickman is to show you the size of the player, and he is carrying a tree btw, google sketchup didnt like me trying to make leaves, and it wouldnt let me import images such as the tree texture etc :/
but yeah, goliath, enjoy, someone make it better please
Ok, when I saw it done in sketchup, I almost cried...
So I made it in blender. Still a work in progress, the tree is just a placeholder.
Improvements on anything but the tree?
So? Ultimately the standard-use names end up being whatever is established by the minepedia page. When Notch implements this stuff, he doesn't include any name for it, so people come up with their own. Since we've come up with names, it's more likely for those pre-existing names to be picked up by whatever wiki page (or more likely, is just left to this very forum post to describe) lists it as. If people want to nickname it other stuff, no biggie, but I still notice that most of the nicknames you're listing as likely are actually longer than the names we've given them.
But very well, I will simply set down ground rules now: Every mob that gets implemented in the Aether will have to meet 3 conditions:
1) No direct damage to players
2) Add spirals to their texture
3) At least one "E" or "Y" must be included in the name, and no more than one other vowel my be used in the name (though that vowel may be used multiple times)
(Note: the second half of this post was not being serious)

I just noticed that the lion on the left is clawing that baby, weird.
It's not clawing the baby, it's just holding it still. the one with it's paw on the ball is the Male and represents Fortune in the worldly matters (material wealth) and the one with it's paw on the baby is the Female and represents Fortune in family/emotional matters (spiritual wealth)
DID THE LEGEND OF ZELDA CALL THE BOSS IN THE DEKU TREE "THAT BIG SPIDER OVER THERE"?HMM?!DID IT!?! NO! BECAUSE CREATIVITY IS AWESOME! LBAUHGOSNG(*HIAONVIMF)(AGSHGOUSNIVUSN(UGWH)IANIOVNBVNBNOS-seizure-

I would prefer the creatures to have more original names. We also need more original creatures as well.

A thought just came to me: If Swets are able to freeze, then wouldn't they freeze when it's daytime (as opposed to daeytime)?

I said it sounded like a cool idea for its own thing, but not necessarily for the Aether.

They vary greatly in size, and fly really fast!!

Certainly! Ill post it tomorrow, but I need some sleep now.
Only the Aether has funky names for it's monsters.
Zombie
Skeleton
Spider
Slimes
Cow
Pig
Chicken
and everyone's favorite
Creeper

Zombie Pig-men
Ghasts
