quote Notch`s blog Minecraft Beta: December 20, 2010
The next epoch is upon us! The skies are trembling, pigs are growing wings, and the nether is turning awfully cold, as Minecraft slowly crawls out of Alpha..
Minecraft will reach Beta status on December 20th, 2010.
With Beta comes a larger focus on polish and content, and we’ll start early on with adding proper modding support with a stable API, and we’d love all input we can get on this from the modders out there. We’ll also add some kind of non-intrusive narrative to the game to help drive the game experience early on, and to provide some kind of late game goal. There will be a bigger focus on testing and stability as well, with more time between updates.
When the game enters beta, the price will rise to 14.95 Euro.
We will also change the license to remove the line that promises all future versions of the game for free. Please note that this change only affects people who buy the game after December 20, so if you got the game for during alpha, you will still get all future updates for free, despite this change. A promise is a promise.
Buying the game during beta will include all updates up until release, of course, and bug patches will be free.
Soon, you will be able to buy gift codes for Minecraft, perfectly timed for the holidays! Even better, if you buy those before December 20, accounts created from these codes will count as alpha accounts, and will receive all future updates for free.
And the next game update (with server-side inventory) is coming next week, before Beta
Merry holidays happy! :biggrin.gif: unquote
that's not thinking that a yes
yeah, but it wont be added when the beta comes out. It will probably be added right before the beta testing ends and the full game is released. Or months after the beta comes out, partway through its lifetime.
ON TOPIC: I was thinking about the Aether, and I realized that the Airship concept should not be an airship at all; but a boat with heavenly wings! Well, time to make it!
On a contributory note, I think Jesus Pig should be a rarespawn phyg (Like Rider Skeletons). Complete with Golden Apple and Yellow Aura.
Jesus Pig WILL rise again, and his second coming will be the day you enter the Aether.
No. I really hope you were joking about that.
Nope. I like wacky stuff every now and then too you know :tongue.gif:

How about a mob that looks like a jumble of regular blocks that lands on the islands and if you try to mine any blockes that are part of it then it would fly away.

When I read this, I immediately thought of a giant blocky blob monster with dozens of wings, eyes and mouths covering its oozing flesh.
Huh.

"Minecraft? Realistic? Really? This is a game where you punch trees to get wood, you can make the wood into wooden planks in less than five seconds, and trees don't fall even if you remove a piece of the trunk from the middle. This is a game where animate corpses, giant spiders and exploding green terrorists emerge at night to hunt you down, farm animals run rampant across the countryside, and you can stop the flow of molten lava with a block of snow."
I was thinking it'd just burrow and look like a regular patch of blocks. Maybe have a very rare block on its back. If you try to mine it flies away with you.

I had an idea similar to this, it was a flying platform mob that tries to go underneath you, fly upwards with you on it and then drop you, delivering near-fatal damage. Come to think of it, that wouldn't be too out of place in the Aether.

Thinking about what grey said about creatures not hurting you directly, and came up with this:
It is called the Mongroo and during the aether Daeytime (not daytime mind you) it becomes hostile and grabs you, pulls you up, and drops you. During the daytime is will act passive, and spawn like any other passive mob. It flies using gas sacks that can be harvested.
I like the flying boat...... kind of.....
But I think a glider, airship, and mount are enough for transport. BTW, the Aether Yeti thread has been updated with concept images, check it out at the link below!

I kinda like that. While it's lifting you, you could control where the horizontal direction, but once it reached a specific altitude it would simply drop you, and of course hitting it would also make it drop you earlier. This would give a much different approach to the flight abilities, since it wouldn't be a mount (which we have 2 solid candidates for already, but an exploitable hostile action.
Not only do I have time on my hands, but I have absolutely no idea on how to work google sketchup
I screwed up a lot on this model buut this is what goliath is planning to look like, I only like pixel art or sketching not 3D models, so sorry if it looks like crap :/
the black stickman is to show you the size of the player, and he is carrying a tree btw, google sketchup didnt like me trying to make leaves, and it wouldnt let me import images such as the tree texture etc :/
but yeah, goliath, enjoy, someone make it better please
the goliath mob wanders the aether isles and whoops ass when it sees the player hurt mobs, try to mine the landscape or place blocks from other dimensions
originally named god it is the guardian mob of the aether, ghasts being the nether mob which kills you if you are near
My issue is not about the Yeti (which was strikingly similar to your Goliath, which I didn't know existed at the time, sorry), it is about the fact that Aether mobs cannot cause direct damage to the player.
(It should also be noted that I've gone into detail about how you can be near it as long as you don't threaten it, and that you can take treasure when it's not looking in a recent update to the thread.)
Um, you have stated that it "whoops a**" on several occasions, which usually translates to "crush you to molecular atoms" or "knock you really hard into oblivion", rather than "erase the ground below you". Which seems to be a contridiction; it prevents you from mining by destroying even more blocks where you are mining.

Perhaps the boat?
EDIT: Changed the wings.

Yeah, grey said that it was a "Requirement". (kindof)
c'mon :biggrin.gif:

these ones at least let you get out of its way

grey liked the idea before (or at least it sounded that way) so the way it attacks can be compromised
