I would love no limitation but to be fair around 15 x 15 is probably the max you could have on any one platform :/
anything placed on top or below doesnt count however, just horizontal limitations, not vertical
also that is one SEXY GLIDER!
now I wanna make an airport full of these babies
Sweet! That means an entire Flying Island complete with Castle could be made and flown with a Redstone, Songstone, Floatsand and Glue mechanism. I'd **** my self if I saw a flying Castle fly over my head and land in front of my house.
You could use the gliders from the floating fortress, so you could be mid flight in SMP, and one of your brave men sees some flying creepers, so he grabs a glider and pulls out his bow then nails them after they make the SSSS trigger sound

Cloud Blocks
So for starters cloud block are only counted as a stable platform if there is another cloud block beneath or above them if another cloud is not beneath them then then the player falls through them.
Between the aetherock and cold clouds, most of the functionality is already covered, for the speedchanging stuff, it's covered between quicksoil and stickysand. Also, trying to make a block placeable in midair would be ridiculous to make sense of.
]" title="-<->" /> [] ]" title="-<->" /> = Hermes' Treads (No Armor Bonus but +20% to run speed)
= Light Loaf (Works the same as bread but stackable up to 3)
]" title="-<->" /> Saddle ]" title="-<->" /> = Pigs Fly (Works like a Normal Saddle but the pig will now jump twice as high)
I guess you basically have the Flying Pigs already, but oh well.
So feel free to use any of that or just ignore it, either way.
I'd prefer the enchanted leggings in my Magic Furnace thread if we're going to do items that increase the player's speed or something involving quicksoil, and yeah, with Phygs, the winged saddle isn't really necessary.

On a contributory note, I think Jesus Pig should be a rarespawn phyg (Like Rider Skeletons). Complete with Golden Apple and Yellow Aura.
Jesus Pig WILL rise again, and his second coming will be the day you enter the Aether.
No. I really hope you were joking about that.

Sooo, those vines, those are cool things they are, naturally growing ladders
You make a vine farm and you get infinite ladders :biggrin.gif:
You can already get infinite ladders by growing trees.
however they will pop off when shot with an arrow and they cannot be placed every second block (like many do with normal ladders)
maybe they require a certain block to be placed on
man, these natural ladders have gotten me all excited
I had been considering the idea that sticky sand would automatically be climbable without needing to attach a ladder to it. It doesn't seem to have much advantage over just placing a ladder on the block though.

I could agree with that implementation for the Venus Flytrap mob.

Again, a double post
Here is a new rendition of the Venus Flytrap like mob:
As you can tell, the alpha on its leaves (which are now feather-leaves. Whatevah.) isn't working in Blender 2.5. Anyone here know how to render with alpha?
On another note, does this better suite the Aether?
The problem isn't how it looks, it's how it functions. Just by design, this pretty much has to directly attack you.
Quote from zophah »
As a matter of attack, have it spit seeds that so no damage but have a massive knockback at long range. In the Aether 1 Venus Spitter could turn an entire small island into a no-mine zone. You could also make them highly territorial and hit other mobs.
At this point, they're doing the same thing that sentries already do, except sentries also can destroy blocks placed by the player. Either way, that would have to be one heck of a huge seed to make any sense doing knockback.

Didn't read it all so this may've been suggested. Why don't you make "flying boots" use the boots that already exist and add a feather or floating block to it and make it increase your jump height and distance. It'll lose durability every time you jump. It would be a simple alternative to airships, and not nearly as effective if they are ever added.
Check the out my magic furnace idea, the leggings and boots specifically, between that, the quicksoil, songstone, and floatstone crafting possibilities, and the Phygs and Aerwhales, potential gliders and airships, I think we have transportation covered. Also, keep in mind that Cold Cloud is meant to form segmented bridges between islands so that players have a path (albeit perilous) to get from island to island normally.
Quote from athdaraxen »
Hey Grey, about how far apart/how close can islands be from one another? If the norm is just a few blocks of space I could see this idea not working... but if there are large spaces between islands I could see this working wonderfully! (I still prefer Moa though...)
Some islands might be close enough together to jump to normally, others might require a combination of songstone and a quicksoil runway to make the jump, but the majority should be fair distances apart and on different altitudes so that there isn't any sense of "ground" level. However all islands should have small chunks of cold cloud near to each other that can form broken up bridges between far apart islands.

It would also be fun using this in the nether or the regular world. Would aether creepers be a good idea? I myself happen to love creepers, and don't you want the joy of dieing in an explosions to follow you to "heaven"? They could be given aether like designs.
Ugh sticking some spirals on a mob is not the qualifier for it to fit in with the Aether. Aether Mobs should not directly harm the player. Though... You have pretty much given me a perfect idea for an Aether Creeper mob; Bluffer. Looks like a flying creeper, hisses and blows up when it gets near you, but the explosion is purely knockback and no damage, maybe skip the knockback too.

that was the original idea, latex from trees would make rubber
i wanted latex system more than the naturally spawning but hey so long as it is in game, right
Part of the problem is that there are only so many specifically functional uses for rubber that don't involve high level technology like cars, or rubber gloves, or con- um... other things that minecraft just shouldn't have in it, Either way, for the really functional rubber stuff, you want VULCANIZED rubber, which often uses sulfer in the vulcanization process, hence why it makes more sense in the Nether.

anyway make grey put that in the OP since this is a banner for his thread
I know, he has the banner there, just no code for people to grab, that's why I re-posted it. I also uploaded it to FileSmelt in case Soul_Cake_Duck's Photobucket hits its bandwidth limit... (Happened to me remember? It was annoying.)
I want to wait to pass out the code for the Banner until I can get the FULL thread up on Get Satisfaction so that people are voting for the Authoritative version. I can't edit the main thread post over at get satisfaction, so before I do that I want to clean up the descriptions for how crystal, songstone, and cold cloud work, get visual diagrams for how the islands and the Aether blocks are generated, fix the wings for the Phygs, and also clean up the coloring on the Sheepuffs, and also see if Firehazurd can get the redesign for the Zephyr that he's been talking about. After everything is cleaned up, then I still need to convert all the formatting to use HTML coding instead of the Forum BB code. It's not just a matter of copying and pasting.

Sorry for the delayed response. If the creepers kept blowing holes in the floating islands that would make it so you have to move. it would prevent people from making permanent bases, unless they could avoid the creepers. If all the monsters that were in the aether were friendly and you could have access to all of the minerals you find in the normal world wouldn't that encourage people to just stay up in the aether? If you are having big holes being blown out of your island you'll want to move.
That's pretty much the OPPOSITE of what I'm trying t push the Aether towards. The Nether already is a place where you'll die if you just stand around in one place. I want the Aether to be a place where you're generally pretty safe staying in one place, but if you want to explore and gather up the cool blocks, then you're putting yourself at risk.

yea, the glue would connect nearly anything to anything, might refrain from glue on glass though
float sand and normal sand seem to be similar, and since the glue is made for sand / gravel then yes
Floatsand isn't affected by gravity, so no. It might be reasonable to make it so that putting sticky sand next to float sand will keep it from moving when you try to mine it, but there's no way that sticky sand should let a block of floatsand make other non-floatsand blocks also float with it. I've already specified that if you get floatsand wet, it will stick to other wet floatsand blocks, so that when you hit one, all of the stuck together floatsand blocks will act as if struck inthe same direction

So would that mean only Gravity Effected blocks? Also, what would be the limitation, because I think if there are enough blocks connected to the block, the glue should wear off, causing the blocks of fall off if on the sides or bottom, and push it down if on top.
Sticky sand blocks would only stick the blocks that are placed directly against a stick sand block, or against a block that has been "stickied" using some crafted material that uses sticky sand as the base. Once placed, sand and gravel still CAN fall, it's just that they wont do so unless a cascade occurs.
I am wondering because if so, you could make an entire controllable flying island, fort, or even a hovercraft using a mechanism using FloatStone, SongStone, Glue, Sand and Redstone, but to make the larger ones work with the limit, you'd need to add spaced out layers of Floatstone meaning needing a lot more material for them to work.
See my above reply to AJ, that wouldn't happen.
EDIT: Also, could glue, when placed on a block, have a stronger effect than Sticky Sand, and being the opposite of the rubber block, making you stick to it instead of rebound?
Again, in an above post, I mentioned the possibility of Sticky Sand blocks automatically functioning as if they had ladders on them. This might give you something similar to the effect you are talking about.

Ok, heres a new creature. It is a flying neutral mob that can be ridden. They are the 'Cows' of the Aether, and drop a kind of leather that can be used to make Weightless Armor. The armor can be used as an alternative to the boots, and will carry you a farther distance. Note that that model is a WIP, and if it is not liked I will try another mob:
It's cute, but we already have Floatsand as a possible material for creating floaty armor, as well as all the other things like magic furnace, quicksoil songstone, etc.
Also, Here is a better render of the Aether Flytrap:
Cheers!
Like I said, it's cute, but it either doesn't fit if it does direct damage, or is already covered by one of the other mobs if it doesn't, most likely the Sentry.
Man, this is a great idea! But, one thing is missing... A mob similar to the Swet, but doesn't try to kill you. It does the same thing, but can't be killed by anything, and while inside it, you don't take damage, and you have infinite air. You can't control these things, and cannot escape them, but they will let you out when near something important like a temple.

I have an idea for a Aether Mob: The Bird of Paradise. These legless guys fly around the islands, and killing them results in getting some valuable substance. The catch is, just like in the original myths they don't have feet, therefore they can't land. It'll take arrows or some blocks, a sword and a lucky jump to hit them.
The glider is kinda cool, but damn you guys. I'm not even gone an entire day and the craziest suggestions are getting tossed out left and right. I feel like I'm herding jello cats.

I can understand the Flytrap not being in the Aether, but this guy can be a mountable creature! I can see why you wouldn't want it though. Are there any mobs that the Aether needs?
Ok Grey, but I think I know how the whole controllable floating island thing would work, but it'd take a whole crap load of Floatsand, and it'd all have to be wet.
About the Flytrap and the other thing (can't remember the name):
They are both good mobs, but they have to be worked out, don't say no before the idea is complete. The Flytrap would have an ice breath that slows you down when you get towards it, or spit poison, or a kind of slippery substance that it spits onto blocks and you slide away on it. The little tadpole thing could drop something else other than skin for armour, the idea just needs work.
EDIT: It's called a Scootwing, how could I forget that?

Just keep in mind that your "floating island" will ONLY be able to consist of floatsand and nothing else. Plus I'm thinking that it should move too fast for you to be able to keep on top of it while it's moving sideways.

I'm not saying no. I'm just trying to direct ideas towards something more viable. The scootwing could work as a bird of paradise thing that never actually lands. It might not even need to drop anything, maybe just a feather or something (though Phygs already should drop those) Maybeit could drop a diamond, but it immediately flies away as soon as you attack it the first time, and since it never lands, it's almost impossible to kill it, and still be close enough to get the diamond it drops.
As for the Flytrap, I just think it would be better to just stick it in the Nether (Nether could use some more mobs too) than to try to shoehorn it into fitting into the Aether.

The Scootwing could be a rare spawn that would be mountable; you have to ride it when its close to the ground or when you're gliding off of an island. It would be faster then the Phyg would be (if the Phyg was mountable of course)
Oh, and what about the Moop? I know its kinda badly done (it still is work in progress after all) but could there be potential for it in the Aether?
I don't think that we should try to find aether type replacements for regular world animals. Why have an aether chicken when you could come up with a unique mob. Except for creepers because creepers are awesome.
I don't know if this has been suggested due to the 34 pages and stuff that i did not want to read, but i have a good idea or two.
1. Along with the air balloons (which i actualy don't like) you could have wings and glide and fly to place to place. I think this is a fantastic idea, but i am sure you guys have discussed this wing thing before.
2. I don't want to steal ideas from other people, but if anyone saw the movie avatar with the blue people? If you did, if you remember the hallelujah mountains, they had waterfalls coming down, beautfiful scenery and fog(kinda), vines and ropes connecting few of the islands.
I personally like both of them and i think the The Aether is a completely original and BEATIFUL Idea. I think these two things would make the aether a beautiful and funtastic place EVER! PLEASE NOTCH PLEASE! ADD THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
