I am now making Darkstone a very useful tool to avoid the over saturated light, it will protect you from the rays and it will be over abundant in the safe zone areas (to such an extent that you have enough to mine but still not enough to over spawn heaps of monsters) and you mine it when you want the ability to place it. Overhanging structures and islands will also protect you from direct sun damage, thus the value of a house increases (the house that features a roof).
A while ago, I had an idea for light sponges. Darkstone could be a similar object.
>3>
Darkstone, that is not a sponge, its a block of pure darkness that naturally spawns in the Nether, it summons over world monster mobs into the Nether that feature Prefixes that increase their stats considerably. When mined it returns light to the darkened area, and then the block can be used to numb the light in the Aether.
And I'm confused as to what that first part is about entirely.
I was objecting to your assertion that Aether is not distinct enough from the Overworld and should merely be implemented as a Biome, rather than a full Realm, and that Nether has these large differences that qualify is as a distinct realm. If you had read the opening post a bit more carefully, specifically "Primary Features of the Aether" you might have understood it better, but I will sum up:
- In Aether, Daylight is bright to the point of being blinding, and the visibility is as bad due to brightness as it is in the overworld during night due to darkness.
- Fire cannot be started in the Aether.
- Lots of new blocks built around floating, falling, and wind.(I'm still working on adding these to the opening post)
Really, if that's all that's to be added, then I'd definitely say it'd work best just as a new landform to be generated. The Daylight brightness sounds interesting, but it also sounds like a gimmick; something that sounds cool but just doesn't hold the thing up on it's own. It'd basically make daytime the new night and nighttime the new day, nothing really revolutionary about that. Same with fire not being startable.
New blocks is the only thing that may actually have a good point to it, but then I'd wonder if you couldn't just add some of the more interesting blocks to the Nether and the less special ones to the regular overworld. I just don't see it as something that'd necessitate an entirely new world to get to and explore.

So to sum this smiliepocalypse up, the red is Nether, the glass is the layer(maybe multiple, 5-10, or rough and random like bedrock)and the notch with the portals is the surface.
OK! My neck is hurting, my back is aching and my shoulders are bust from that useless smilie-picture-diagram-pocalypse-thing above, but I'll keep going on. Bear with me now, things are going to get interesting.(as if they aren't already) Mobs
From what I see it, there should be no dangerous mobs, so this could be the 'peaceful peaceful' that my wuss friend asked me to suggest(I never did, he can do it himself). What I think should be added are the things that you kill, minus the enemy mobs, should appear here. They will have a glowing Halo above their heads, and when killed, drop the halo and/or whatever they dropped in Minecraftia, and the halo can be disassembled to become gold bars, and crafted back like
[] [] []
[] []
and it can be worn as a headgear, useless, or until someone suggests a use for it(please do).
So aside from the sheep and cow and chicken and pig angels, we should also have human angels. These will be special. When you die, one appears in Ether and doesn't despawn, thus haunting you for the rest of your Minecraftian life on how you got pwned by some pig who pushed you off a cliff. These are also attackable, and can drop a halo and/or anything that you can hold in your hand(of course not including INVedit-ed items like fire blocks or lava blocks or mob spawners), thus encouraging the player to do risky exploring trips, so they can find rare items AND if they die they get an angel spawned in heaven for them to kill.
The Supreme God of Divine Judgement
There should be a god(let's just replace the word 'god' with Notch's face ). One will spawn, in a little house made of adminium re-textured to look like something valuable, but indestructible. The Supreme God of Divine Judgement( :iapprove:) will decide on your kill count(see below) whether you are good, or BAD. Good gets a reward, perhaps a halo or a diamond block or something, and a bad is locked up in an adminium 50x50 box where ghasts spawn like crazy, and only equipped with a bow and 2 stacks of arrows. if you win, you get good and if you lose, well...idk you guys suggest.
Kill Count Judgement
There should also be 2 kill count bars, one red and one green. The red one represents how many denizens of the Nether and how many enemy mobs you have killed in your lifetime(meaning the period in between your deaths) and vice versa vice versa. When you die, you see the (see above) and blah blah blah. But, maybe instead of getting one flimsy puny useless diamond block, you can open up the :iapprove:store and buy anything considered valuable at a set price!(the number of good kills -- the number of bad kills = the amount of money you have for spending on the :iapprove:store.
Thanks so much for sticking with me till here, my shoulders are on the verge of decomposing, and I'm off to see my masseuse. Bai!
Oh and by the way, I was just reading the first post and had a flash of inspiration and wrote it all down above, so I didn't see the sentinels part, please synchronize my ideas with yours.
I always love the idea of more dimensions.
One thing I would change is that day-time light shouldn't be blindingly bright. That would be a bit annoying. Permanent daytime with frequent sunrises and sunsets (only for effect, no actual day-night transition) sounds better to me.

OKay, so the dimensions aren't corresponding, but that's what it'd look like.
God, I just go to sleep for a couple of hours and I already have the craziest unbalanced suggestions here, and then other people saying that it still isn't enough.
@ChromE - Honestly, I figured just linking back to the old thread would have already covered what credit you needed. As you said before, there's really very little about the current idea that actually connects with your original conception other than "opposite of Nether" And until Firehazurd and I hopped into the thread, it was still only 1 page, from there it blew up into 6 pages.
I'm going to work on adding the Block ideas first. Once we see how they function and all work together, I think it'll be easier to see how their abilities are going to affect things, and how well they fit in with Minecraft rather than turning it into something completely different. I also have an idea for glass that may make for a much more interesting dynamic than just "New block" so stay tuned. Hopefully I can finish before I wind up with 6 more pages consisting mainly of unbalanced ideas.
well, hell, of course you people are allowed. What am I going to do? make you take them back down? kick you out of the thread?
Nah, I'm just going to take what seems viable and add that to the topic. If it's not viable, I'll leave it, people can still kick the ideas around and try to convince me, eventually the dialog will move from "this idea is so cool!" to "this idea can make sense and isn't impractical" and I'll take a bit more thorough notice.
So far I think I have the main blocks I want to focus on in place, I just need to get their descriptions in. People may have noticed that I altered the names of the blocks quite a bit. Mainly for variety, not only in the names, but also in the block types. Nether has a balance of a Stone type block, a Dirt type block, and a Glass type block, and then whatever Darkrock ends up being (probably a stone block, but maybe an ore, where you need a specific level of pickaxe to mine it)
So songstone and Etherblocks are both stone type, floatsand is a dirt type, and quicksoil is a dirt type as well. and I'm planning on making it so glass has special properties that draw on the crystal ideas that have been suggested, but those properties only function while in the Aether, and will help address issues with the "no fire in Aether" concept and allow that to extend to furnaces without killing off other ideas.
First of all, The Supreme God of Divine Judgement
There should be a god(let's just replace the word 'god' with Notch's face ). One will spawn, in a little house made of adminium re-textured to look like something valuable, but indestructible. Goliath mob - Triple player height, kills when player attacks any mob or mines any resource, can run through every type of block except adminium (adminium isn't in the aether anyway), holds a tree which does 2 hearts damage when it hits player. That there is probably the closest thing to a "god" mob in the game, and it doesn't attack when you don't ruin the Aether. See, win win :>
EDIT: I originally stated this mob back in the old thread, so yeahhhhhhhhh, mein
Cloud - a soft, semitransparent block. You would sink into it a tiny bit while walking on it. Whenever you land on it from a high enough height, it slows you down but doesn't cause fall damage, you can fall through if you're going too fast. When you do, the cloud block fades out and becomes intangible for a time, and you keep falling, or going through other cloud blocks. You can walk through them slowly, but will suffocate if they weren't just fallen through. These will act as platforms to jump from island to island in the nether.
Darkstone - I named it the same as the others cause it fits, I had the idea before, and whether it's nether or aether doesn't matter. It basically spreads out a negative light value, just like lights do. It cools them down, to the point that if fire gets dark enough, it will go out, and water close to this can freeze.

BBCode Render failed due to reaching MaxNestingDepth(80) for Tag: spoiler
I'm fairly sure that Notch confirmed that the Nether is on a completely separate realm of space from the Main world so they are only connected through portals. So, I think the Aether would have the same case, so you can't have water falling from the Aether into the normal world, or a 2D replica of the normal world. In any case, I'm fairly sure that would be hard to program. I also think that there should be a way to get into space, but definitely not through the Aether or the Nether. Maybe introducing new blocks in both the Aether and the Nether in a space update that allow you to build a launch-pad in a sense to get to the moon. But that's not the point.
I'd rather have there be only one way to get to the Aether, and only 2 ways to get out of it. One is by dying and respawning, and the other is to go through the portal you came in. I'd also make it so that the portal is made out of a material found in the Normal World, that is attributed to light. I like the original idea of a marble gate, that would be cool. In my opinion, using lightstone is a bad decision. I'd rather have the Aether be just of hard a place to live in as the Nether, and have blocks there that are useful to have a good reason to go there. It would also make those who really don't want to go to the Nether happier. I say that because I doubt the number of realms to expand to would go farther than the Nether, Aether, Normal World, Ocean, and POSSIBLY (just possibly) space.
I support the idea of introducing a new block that is abundant in areas near water (preferably 1-2 blocks below sand), such as the chalk introduced earlier. You could get chalk to turn into marble by collecting it (which would take 1 second to mine with diamond) and then putting it in a furnace with only a bucket of lava as the heat source (yes, it is possible to do that now) and it taking 15 seconds to turn into one marble so it is around the same time to get as obsidian is.
You would then make the portal in the same way as your saying and the portal color would be a bright yellow that glows more than the Nether portal at night.
I really think this idea makes more sense than using Lightstone as the portal maker, so it would make the player happier about it, and the Aether would be just as difficult to get stuff in as the Nether, it just has a lighter environment.

I like this idea. I always wondered what you would do with a "heaven" type map and of course since the "hell" map became official as the Nether, I'd have to think it's bound to happen some day. I figured Lightstone would be used to make a portal, and it just makes the idea of having to go through Hell in order to get to Heaven much better. It's practically biblical! Although, I'd have to imagine a world above the normal world would be rather Cold, seeing as it is up closer to space. So really, It should be like the Winter levels rather than the Overworld. You know. Make both new worlds one extreme or the other.
Heck! Perhaps instead of making Flying monsters in the Overworld, put them in the Aether. Ones you can put a saddle on and take anywhere. That way, you can go to the Aether, tame a dragon or whatever and then go anywhere. I would also like to think that a Heavenly area would have an abundance of ores. That way, a lot of precious ores would be within the floating continents you'll encounter, but mining them would be dangerous, as you can possibly fall through. Falling should really be an instant death... I mean, Have you ever fallen into the lava in the Nether? You do, and you're pretty much screwed.
So where water may flow over the edge, there would be ice covering it... and if you're careless, you'll slip and fall to your doom!

The Nether isn't actually connected to the normal world in any way, it's on a separate place on existence. I'd suspect the Aether would be the same if implemented.

I didn't mean to imply that, if you took it that way. No. You'd only be able to access it from a portal, but if you were on a flying mount, you'd be able to take that with you through the portal, is all I'm saying. Falling from the Aether would be like falling through Bedrock. You die.

It basically spreads out a negative light value, just like lights do. It cools them down, to the point that if fire gets dark enough, it will go out, and water close to this can freeze.

I want to see Aewhale :ohmy.gif:
Beside I linked this thread in a sugestion I made about long term goal
You die.
