Dragons usually represent destruction. But the Aether is suppose to be a heavenly place (if I interpreted it the way GreyAcumen had in mind).
Besides, I think we could be a little more original than dragons. I'm sure Firehazurd could think of something cool and new if there were guardians to be added.

Not in all cases, maybe a nice feather winged Oriental dragon?
I was like I got to download it! Then I was like OH SNAP!!! And threw my keyboard across the room*.

We haven't even really had time to think of music, everything is pretty much conceptual except for specific aspects that are being developed by people mucking around with things.

It has been discussed that if dragons were implemented in Minecraft in general, that an oriental style dragon would be appropriate for the Aether. It would be territorial and would have some sort of ice breath to keep the player out of its territory.
Overworld would have something more wyvern-like, as well as sea serpents or pleaseosaur style dragons in the ocean, and the nether would have a large firebreathing land dragon of some sort.

My apologies Grey, I must have missed that part... (and here I thought I read most everything on the thread)...I like the dragon concepts for all the worlds though, they seem appropriate. :smile.gif:
I get most of this stuff, but while reading the section on the minerals, I've gotta ask: What are the Aether Islands going to mainly be composed of? Overworld materials? I saw nothing on a "Main Rock" type thing like Bloodstone is for the Nether.
It's already hard enough to gather the necessary amount of lighstone blocks, don't further complicate this. I've NEVER been able to kill a ghast in any place that I could reasonably obtain a drop from it, killing them at all has been maybe 2 or 3 times successfully. Also, needing to kill a ghast to reach the nether would mean that those playing on peaceful would only be able to reach the Nether and not the Aether, which is ridiculous.

I think it'll actually be going the other direction; where Nether is uniform and consistent, Aether will be varied and have a high "mix" of blocks within each island.

It consists primarily of open area of sky, clouds and floating islands, some small, some massive. These consist primarily of sand, gravel, water, and ice towards their surface, stone or mossy cobblestone towards their base, and a number of specialty blocks that are only found in the Aether spread throughout(these will be discussed further down)
I think gravel will actually be skipped since it can apparently be found in the Nether (though i never have seen it myself)
So basically, Islands would consist primarily of sand and stone, with pools of water on top, but would have veins of Aetherock and Songstone running through them, sections of quicksoil near the pools of water and edges of the islands on the surface, floatsand along any upper peaks and the underside of the edges of islands, occasional Darkwood growths on the base peaks, and Crystals that grow in single and double block formations scattered along the surface and inside of any caves or temples as well as in place of leaves of trees. Lightstone (and possibly cloudclay, solid cloud blocks that will disappear after a few seconds after being touched, and will reappear 5-10 seconds after) will be scattered between the various sky islands to form segmented bridges that can allow some small degree of travel by foot between each island. Temples will be comprised of Marble if it is ever implemented in the Overworld, but otherwise it will be made out of mossy cobblestone.
I actually have a pretty good picture in my head for a cross sectional diagram to help show the where things would fall
Grey, out of curiosity, what if an island has a large amount of sand, do the sand physics still apply in the Aether? I only ask as this might destroy islands if enough sand is in one place right? I'm going off of the whole, you hit one, every sand block next to it will fall as well. I fear this might destroy a lot of the Aether... If I'm wrong then that's awesome. :biggrin.gif:

Sand will generally be more towards the tops and sides of any particular island. The cores of most islands will usually be stone and specialty blocks. Yes, normal sand physics DOES apply, but remember that it takes more than just hitting a sand block to cause a cascade of any unsupported sand, you have to actually BREAK a sand block. This is intentional, as if you're stupid and go mining an unsupported sand block you could have the whole cluster fall out from under you.
Sand does have a limit to how far it will cascade, so larger islands wont lose all sand, and I've reworked slow sand from nether into sticky sand, which the player can use to rebuild unsupported sand formations, and limit how sand falls.
Oh, and if sand or gravel (or any other block affected by gravity) falls to the bottom of the Aether it will be broken as if fallen onto a torch/fire/lava.

Ok thank you for clearing that up Grey. (I meant to say hit...)
*applause* Another epic victory for the wonderful Firehazurd!
This would be a nice mob for flight between islands, for those against the flying pigs I'm sure this will be most welcome. I especially like that it is a carnivorous bird, much more fun than a chicken! I'm not sure on how close the islands are or if there will be smaller ones (like 5 blocks of just random floating stuff) in between the larger islands but I would imagine it would be fun hopping around on one of your Sky Moa!
I don't really see the need to have a sky moa variant. Just use the regular one. It wouldn't be a bad contrast if the pigs flew better, but couldn't be controlled (so you could only go to whichever island they decided to go to) and the Moa could fly in short bursts, but if you had reigns it could be controlled.
So, uhh...Kind of a repost. I think you guys should team up with the modders in the mods forum. Like, theres one person you has put new functional mobs in, like, they do new things. That means they had to do something themselves, right? That means with some time and effort, this could easily be done. I sure hope you guys can do it.
Erm, I know it's probably a bit late for this, but I think that rather than using a lighter version and use the particles, you should go for something more unique, like a non-seethrough gate of light, or just completely white blocks that give off a high light level.
two things have you thought about an Aetherwatch so you could tell when daey time is ?
also if you have never heard there is an amazing map called skylands witch is a near perfect representation of the aether onlyy it is more of an adventure with different places, 6-10 story dungeons, safe houses and spawn points but it is floating islands of amazement check it out if any one really wants a taste of what the Aether could be...

The regular watch still works in the Aether. Day on the watch = Daey, Night on the Watch = Night. It makes sense that it can still work because Nether doesn't have night OR day, so of course the watch wouldn't work there, but the Aether does have a Daey-day light cycle, so watch still works.

Sorry, about this but I tl;dr'ed some of the OP 'cus it's kinda massive.
I like the idea. FACT. But I don't like some of the things about the idea, e.g. Make the portal out of lightstone? That's kinda easy.
No it's not. Remember, lightstone doesn't gather on a 1:1 ratio, you have to gather NINE TIMES the amount of lightstone that you actually need for making the portal. Even on Peaceful mode it takes some serious work.
I do like the mobs, or at least the whale mob :ohmy.gif: they are really cool.
I really cba to go through all the things I don't like, but the main thing is that most of it seems redundant - what would we gain from having an anti-nether?
I'll make an index in a little bit. Right now I'm busy with Christmas decorations and stuff.
I would prefer if the sky limit was doubled (Or tripled even) and there were 'sky-islands' up there that you could see. You would be able to fly up there with some sort of mechanism (Or just pile hundreds of blocks on top of each other >.>), but it would require finding something quite rare from the Nether (Obsidian level rare, see what I'm getting at?)
Aether would consist entirely of Sky, and falling to the bottom of it would transport you to the top of the sky of the Overworld, so you would kinda be getting what you want.
Anyway, the point is moot because Notch will not add a realm that is essentially 'Heaven', it would basically make the game a Christian game :\
Footnote: I think the Sky-islands thing is a better one to endorse as it does not have any religious connotations if done right.
Sky Islands ARE what the Aether consists of. You've pretty much sabotaged yourself by going "tl;dr"
