This is just my opinion on the Aether topic in general.
I like the overall concept, but there are certain aspects and details which I don't think would work.
First of all, I don't really like the idea of flying, as an alternative to using a portal to access it, primarily because I think that it shouldn't be located above the main world. When traveling in the Nether your compass and watch spin randomly, suggesting that the Nether isn't located below the bedrock but in an entirely different realm of existence (My opinion on this is split however, for the fast travel aspect of the Nether suggests that it is located closer toward the centre of the Earth, meaning that the circumference is significantly shorter than on the surface). As a parallel to nether, I don't think the Aether should be located above the earth. This would also mean abandoning the idea of having a 2d render below you, and being able to fall all the way down to earth. This means that there needs to be something on the bottom of the Aether to land on, creating the danger of falling.
There are two ways I can imagine this being done in. A) At the very bottom of the Aether there is an ocean of ice and water, which you would potentially land on when bumped off from an Island. Compared to an ordinary chunk, the sea level in the Aether would occur much lower. Then again, an ocean at the bottom probably wouldn't work, and differs from your original Idea. :cool.gif: As a much more radical alternative, chunks in the aether could be stacked vertically, rather than horizontally. This would mean that the Aether could be made entirely out of floating Islands. When falling off an Island, at some point during your decent, you will inevitably land on an Island at some point. Whether this happens fairly soon or later, your chances of survival are varied. The only problem with this is if the space between islands is quite large, very long falls will result in a gratuitous amount of Aether chunks being generated before dying. This could be problematic, as a nasty fall can potentially increase the size of a save, greatly. This could be prevented by having Islands very close together, but it would still be probably, and may not look very nice. Also, if the chunks were stacked this way, there would have to be a barrier around the walls of the chunks, probably consisting of covered bedrock. If you like this idea, then it is still open for discussion. It would be a bit of a long shot to do it in this way.
Apart from that, I don't have much to say. I love the idea of another realm, I love the mob concepts and I love the block suggestions, but in the end, it's up to Notch whether to implement this.
Back in page 5, I did some calculations to see how far away the Aether is from the Overworld and from the Overworld to the Nether. In the vertical direction.
Quote from Elmach »
Some calculations for the distance from the Aether to the Overworld to the Nether.
Aether distance/Overworld Distance: 8/1.
Overworld Distance/Nether Distance: 8/1.
Cloud Level Distance / Sea Level Distance: 1/1.
Assuming that the cloud level is 64 meters above sea level, this means that by the similar triangles property...
The Aether is infinitely above the overworld, and the Nether is infinitely below the netherworld.
It also means that the overworld is (approximately, at far distances) a plane.
But it is.
Still, I think it would be possible to have a blurry picture of the overworld (top view) at the bottom of the Aether.
Tmm;dr (Too much math, didn't read)
Since the distances in the Overworld don't change no matter where you are, ditto with Nether and Aether, but there is a different distance in the Nether and Aether, the Nether has to be infinitely far below and the Aether infinitely far above. Also, the Overworld, Nether, and Aether are planes.
Yeah. So the distance is infinitely far, unless we take in account some weird space-bending mechanism.
Now, you could have a blurry picture of the overworld at the bottom of the Aether... but it should look extremely far away, and never seem to get closer. And you shouldn't be able to drop into there... you should rather die, and your items end up scattered around the overworld in the chunk you were landing on. Or attempting to.

You, like many others, still are getting caught in this idea that you can't "fall back into the overworld" unless the Aether is physically above the Overworld. Being able to do this doesn't require the Aether be above the Overworld, it could just be chalked up to a giant portal in the bottom of the Aether. Which is essentially how it WOULD function, even if we DID state that the Aether is above the overworld.

Which is pretty much exactly what portals ARE.

Why? no matter how far you fall in Minecraft, if you land in water 2 blocks deep, you'll still survive. Why should your chances be any worse in the Aether?
Notch, prepare your Java, because now you have a work for Minecraft Easter Update! [lol]
How can I support you? Tweet Notch?
Vote for it on getSatisfaction. I was planing on linking you directly to the relevant post on getSatisfaction but the Aether suggestion doesn't really link back here, nor does it mention or even acknowledge it.
Perhaps if Grey Acumen added his own post there?
Oh please do this Grey! You could really get this noticed if you did!!
Is this the thing you'e talking about? Because if so this is completely different from the real idea. If you're going to have this idea anywhere, have the ACTUAL idea there.

That is horridly off from the actual idea.... I get the feeling that wasn't Grey who put that there.
I've added a thread over there and put the link in the main page, I've also updated the main post with some of the most recent ideas that have come up in the last few pages. They're pretty rough as it is, but I'll clean things up over the next few weeks.

Just had an idea for a mob that incorporates my old "Trickster" idea.
Baffle Bee:
A Baffle Bee is the same size and shape as a bumble bee, however it is black and purple in colour. The Baffle Bee has a venom that is produced in it's stinger (read the Trickster post I made a while ago for the effects). Along with producing the venom, their stingers have a Dark wood like effect, but obviously no where near as powerful, but still enough to notice it during Daey. The Baffle Bee live in hives that resemble the top of a pie, but wrinkly and with holes in it of various sizes. The hives can appear on any side of a block (top, bottom, sides) and appears areas that Sheepuffs and Flying pigs would spawn.
When the player gets to close to the hive, a swarm of Baffle Bees will surround the player trying to sting them and inject them with the venom and once you are stung, they will continue to fly around and stinging you (note that stinging causes no damage), keeping you disorientated until you can get away from them. To escape a swarm of Baffle Bees, you can dive into water (they'll stay at the surface for a second or two and then leave if you don't come up), get close to another mob (they'll all fly to that one and forget about you), go through a portal, go into an inclosed area, or run. Running away isn't very effective, but when running, a blocks worth of distance is made between you and the Baffle Bees, and you can take the opportunity to build a wall in between you and them. They will try to fly around it, but will quickly lose you if it is Daey. However, the Baffle Bees will leave you normally if they are around you for 3 times the amount of time the venom takes to wear off (basically, if getting stung once makes the venom last 3 seconds, they'd leave in 9. Obviously this is hypothetical because that is way to short of time). Breaking open a Baffle Bee hive will drop the venom which can be used on your weapons to poison enemies.
A little backstory on them:
Although the Baffle Bees produce the venom, it effects them in the same way it effects others, but after a long evolutionary process, they have learned to tell what is real and what is not far easier. To be able to think and maintain the hive, they must sting animals regularly to lower the venom in them, which is why they make their hives where animals usually are. The venom is produced as a byproduct from their only consumable food in the Aether. The light absorbing factor of their stinger is an evolutionary trait so as to lure animals towards possible shade from the Daey time sun.
also, get satisfaction is a ruthless site if you dont advertise your topic properly :/
so have you actually posted it up there? I will happily give it a star
anyway, I think that the aether has enough mob suggestions now, maybe some tweaking for a few of them, but if you keep suggesting we will get more aether mobs than the overworld and the nether put together
I wonder if it is possible to get some one to create some sort of texture pack for this, just to see what it would look like in game :ohmy.gif:
A common "does no damage but disorients you" effect for the poison would be to:
flip the screen (try playing upside down in the world's most unfriendly enviroment!)
reverse Y/X axis,
reverse player movement (a great idea for the potential to walk off an island!)
makes the screen wave (much like it does right before teleporting in a portal)
switches around block and mob textures (try walking across dirt only to find that it is actually quicksoil!)
These and more will make it the most lethal of non-damaging mobs!
Rollback Post to RevisionRollBack
I once saw a chicken push a creeper off of a cliff. I never looked at chickens the same way ever again. That is of course until I needed feathers.
op post of all reasonable ideas would give us something to work from, and just make it clear that the aether has a lot of suggestions for mobs and blocks

I already have what the venom does from my Trickster post on page 18:
Quote from Flubbedpig »
A new mob:
Trickster (name pending):
A Trickster is a mob that has a similar ability to Aetherrock, as in it looks like the block next to it. The Trickster is a mob that does not move or attack, it hides like Aetherrock, but with a slightly paler colour than the block it is mimicking. Although it doesn't attack, when it is touched, it poisons whatever touched it. Not in the way of damaging you, but in disorientating you (or the mob). It blurs your vision, and makes things appear to be there, or not be there.
The way it works, is when it makes things seem like they are there, the thing looks slightly see through, but this is hard to notice because everything is blurred. It can make things seem like they aren't there, you can still see the thing, but barely. It can also make Mobs not be there, or be there in the same way as blocks and objects. If you walk into another Trickster, you will slightly lose control of your legs, having to fight them so they don't walk you off islands.
If you kill a Trickster, they drop their poison, which allows you to place it on your weapons so that you can poison enemies, possibly making them attack other mobs or kill them selves.
EDIT: However, I think the screen swirling slightly might be a good addition.
