Could you please explain and elaborate on this? I fear that if you keep your post just like that, people will think you are a troll. And we don't want that to happen, do you?
I still don't see what would be good about Flying Pigs. They wouldn't fit in the aesthetic style of the Aether and would look ridiculous. As you may have guessed, what I am against is the look of it. If it were to be a large pig-sized bird or a whole new minecraft specific creature, I would be fine with it. I might even feel better if it wasn't just the pink pig we have now with wings, but actually looked more like it would live in the Aether.
Could you please explain and elaborate on this? I fear that if you keep your post just like that, people will think you are a troll. And we don't want that to happen, do you?
Why do you believe Anti-Nether is fail?
Notch would never put it in, it's just two cheasy... I have to admit he might add another alternate dimention, But if anything he would NOT call it the Anti-Nether. He would call it something clever pertaining to what it looks like, not Aether (Nether looks like Hell). I like the idea of Ruins much more than this.

Reference to my edit.....
Plus Aether isn't clever enough. Nether actualy soundy like and underworldly realm. For instance, something more creative like Vallhala, the Heaven of the Pagan Vikings.(just example)
What i'm saying is that anything sounding like Nether is cheasy.
Dude, seriously. This got discussed around 5 pages INTO this thread. Aether is descriptive, non-religious, and brings continuity between the two realms. You may not like it, but that hardly qualifies as failure.
Plus Aether isn't clever enough. Nether actualy soundy like and underworldly realm.
Do you seriously not understand what Aether means?

So Aether is cheesy, but Valhalla isn't? You are just NOT defending your opinion well here.

That being a religious reference that implies that the realm is "Heaven" or the like. Aether is much more fitting. Also, besides the name what is it about the Aether you are against?
Honestly, that type of thing sounds great if you're absolutely supporting the specific concept that Nether and Aether really are Hell and Heaven of minecraft, but I think it's better to follow that theme, but still leave the actual realm itself open to interpretation as just simply a different realm that has no religious context. So no taint.
If Notch were to add Aether to compliment Nether, he wouldn't be the first to create "heaven-ish" and "hellish" realms. The Elder Scrolls has Oblivion (some realms of which could be considered Hell) and Aetherius ("Heaven").
I'm not Christian, but I have no problem with Notch's Nether, and I think Aether is a fantastic suggestion. If Notch added the Devil and demons and Jesus and angels, and somehow implied that people who prefer the Nether are worse than people who prefer Aether, THEN I would be concerned.
Disclaimer: This is my opinion, not an attempt to troll.
Fair enough. But If you're going to the effort of posting here, and you're not trolling, then you obviously feel your opinion has a certain amount of validity. So how about clarifying your stance? It's one thing to say that "this stuff is useless/pointless" but if so, then what WOULD qualify as having a point and being useful?
My opinion is that the Nether was a waste of time.
It adds very little to actual gameplay, and all I see it as is just a gimmick to keep people quiet.
Or, perhaps more truthfully, a way to get the Single Players occupied while Notch begins SMP bugfixing.
The amount of things you can do in the nether absolutely pales in comparison to the things you can do in the normal world.
The one thing it does do, is to give a place where you'll never feel safe. That said, it could be done a lot better (more aggro enemies that enjoy ****ing your **** up).
The Aether as it's being marketed, an 'Anti-Nether' should be the opposite, correct? It should be a place that you always feel safe, a relaxing place to do... Whatever.
But what exactly is the use of that? It adds little to gameplay, and seems in an identical fashion the the Nether... A Gimmick.
All of this completely ignores the fact that Notch is trying to get away from the religious view of the Nether, and incorporating an Anti-Nether completely destroys that distance from Religion.
You do realize that the second you said you disliked the Nether and thought it was a waste of time you just ostracized yourself from a majority of the posters in this thread right?
And basically set yourself up as a troll, even if you aren't, right?
That'd be like if I went into an "Obsidian tools" thread and said the idea was pointless, because I didn't like the fact that there were tiers on tools to begin with.
You're doing the idea no good.
You're setting yourself up for a flame war if you make a wrong move.
And it'd just be a better idea over all for you to leave this thread with what you've said last.
You aren't going to contribute anything, and nearly everyone in this thread is going to be against you.
Just save everyone the grief and go.
I'm sorry, I didn't realise that a majority of the people in this thread are ignorant and immature morons who can't take any sort of opposition to their ideas.
Or so you seem to assume.
The OP was mature enough to take my original post at face value, why aren't you?
If a flame war starts, I hardly see that as my own fault, rather that of the people who've taken offense to my perfectly legitimate opinion to the thread's subject.
In case you didn't realise, the only way things get better is critism. And some things simply aren't meant to happen.
It's my opinion that this idea falls into the latter.
It's like Microsofts Vista.
'Oh yeah. Cool. But why?'
As for you posting in the first place, what good did it do?
If you're going to say that to everyone that has a problem with the idea...
Just save everyone the grief and stop talking.
Just you, like nearly everyone else against this idea, lacks any decent reason to defend your opinion.
We already HAVE the Nether. It isn't going away. And because we have the Nether ideas to add more realms aren't too far fetched.
Just because you dislike the Nether doesn't mean the Aether or anything else isn't a good idea. It just means you don't like it.
And how would that improve the thread, or thought processes of anyone supporting the idea if you consistently state "I dislike this idea because I dislike an already implemented similar idea!"? Protip: it doesn't.
Also, since you're so keen on "Lol if you reply like this to everyone...", How about you actually read through the entirety of the damn thread first?
Ive left people alone who dislike this idea. Because EVERY time someone ELSE from this thread comes up and says "Why?" to their objection. To which they have no answer.
Your answer was "Because I don't like the Nether." And guess what, the response to that from ANYONE who doesn't share your disdain is "Tough."
The difference between you and them, was you stuck around acting as if that was enough justification. I posted to point out that it wasn't.
If you want to say it's a bad idea, and truly show how it is one and that it shouldn't even be THOUGHT of any longer... Go find a better reason.
Until then you're just clogging up this thread with useless "THIS SUCKS" posts with a reason that no one will ever agree with.
So, I say again, save us all the grief and go.
tl;dr
You staying here is quite simply "I don't like this idea and no one likes my reason so I'm just going to stick around and annoy the **** out of everyone here."
Which is why I said "And basically set yourself up as a troll, even if you aren't, right?" Because that's exactly troll behavior.
I asked that question earlier to know if you knew exactly what you were setting yourself up for.
Name ONE thing that "added to gameplay" that isn't:
1) An enemy
2) A method of travel
3) A method of destroying
4) A method of creating
Because congratulations, those 4 things are the core components of "gameplay" of Minecraft.
NOTHING in the game does ANYTHING besides those 4 things.
NO SUGGESTION has gone outside of those 4 gameplay components.
Your request for "Significant changes to gameplay" will never actually be satisfied because it'll always fall into those two categories.
If you're trying to find something that "Adds to gameplay" but is actually outside those bounds, AND you're saying the Nether was a bad idea (Which I'm pretty sure no one on the forums suggested prior to it's announcement), you're searching for something that doesn't exist.
*edit*
Actually, looking at it, the Aether qualifies as something outside those bounds. It doesn't fit #2 like the Nether because it slows down progression. But if used in a building project...
Well, ever heard of "It's bigger on the inside"?
My opinion is that the Nether was a waste of time.
It adds very little to actual gameplay, and all I see it as is just a gimmick to keep people quiet.
Or, perhaps more truthfully, a way to get the Single Players occupied while Notch begins SMP bugfixing.

So it pales in comparison, so what? You're expecting notch to make an entirely new game that is accessible from within minecraft? As it is, you're still being pretty dumb about forming this initial opinion. It's like hating Minecraft because it doesn't have redstone dust back before it had redstone dust. There's plenty more that can be done with it, and even if nothing is ever done by notch, the coding still provides the base for other people to add onto it from there with mods.
The Aether as it's being marketed, an 'Anti-Nether' should be the opposite, correct? It should be a place that you always feel safe, a relaxing place to do... Whatever.
Well, here's the first point on which your opinion fails horribly; you apparently didn't read the opening post. It's hard to form an opinion that isn't completely baseless and erroneous when you arrived at your opinion using 2 words out of the 2000+ that are being used to describe it.
Anti-Nether does not mean that danger doesn't exist, but that danger has a completely different source. If you had so much as even GLANCED at the opening post, you would have run across this:
The main thing to understand is that, yes, The Aether is a "Heavenly" wide open dimension of Light, Air, and Water that exists above the Overworld, and functions as an opposite of the Nether that is a "Hellish" enclosed dimension of Darkness, Rock, and Fire that exists below the Overworld. BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN IT IS SAFE
Which is the very FIRST paragraph in the entire THREAD.
But what exactly is the use of that? It adds little to gameplay, and seems in an identical fashion the the Nether... A Gimmick.
Aside from the fact that you don't even know what it is you're calling a gimmick, I don't think you actually have a grasp of what the term "gimmick" actually means, certainly not in the context of minecraft.
1. an ingenious or novel device, scheme, or stratagem, esp. one designed to attract attention or increase appeal. There are other definitions listed, but they don't really apply, so I didn't bother listing them, the link is there so you can go check if you're curious.
Going purely by the standalone definition EVERYTHING in minecraft is a gimmick, and you referring to the Nether and Aether as a gimmick is actually a compliment. However I also recognize that in common use, gimmick also tacks on "with little or no functional value that would benefit those being attracted" to the end of that definition. This part of your opinion is also erroneous, and if you had bothered reading about Aetherock, Floatsand, Quicksoil, Songstone, and Aerwhales(as well as flying pigs) you would have easily been able to find out about what useful additions and functional benefits the Aether would contain. If you read about Darkwood you would be able to see what useful additions the Nether could get. (and that's not even including Rubber, and Rubblegum/Stickysand)
If you still feel that these are "gimmicks" then you need to start coming up with some specific examples of things that COULD be added to minecraft that WOULDN'T be gimmicks.
All of this completely ignores the fact that Notch is trying to get away from the religious view of the Nether, and incorporating an Anti-Nether completely destroys that distance from Religion.
Even in a non-religious context, themed "realms" commonly have Opposites. Lightman invariably battled Darkman, Hotman invariably battles Coldman, Natureman invariably battles Machineman, etc. Again, if you had actually read, you would have been able to see that while there are some things that are evocative of Heaven, it doesn't have anything more concretely religious than Nether does.
That's actually an interesting concept, but has no place in the Aether.
Could you please explain and elaborate on this? I fear that if you keep your post just like that, people will think you are a troll. And we don't want that to happen, do you?
Why do you believe Anti-Nether is fail?
I find myself agreeing with this opinion.

Aether means sky in mythology.
