Actually the Swets are hostile, but they don't do direct damage to you, they put you in a position to be killed, just as the Zephyr does. I still think that the winged animal thing shouldn't happen, just my opinion. Although, I am more inclined towards Bird men than winged pig men.
EDIT: I don't like them because I find they don't seem to fit into Aether properly. Maybe the mob could be almost like a human version of a Zephyr.
I still say no, it doesn't seem natural to me. Random flying pigs just don't feel right when there could be many better choices for neutral/passive mobs.
EDIT:I'm going to edit this in to this post so as not to double post:
What I meant by a human Zephyr, is that they'd be bipedal with traits similar to that of the Zephyr (more on that in a sec). I have not come up with a name, so I'll call them Zepyph.
The Zepyph will have skin the same colour as a Zephyr, the same mouth and the same pattern on their skin. They will not have eyes like the Zephyr, but rather the pattern on the Zephyrs cheeks will be where it's eyes should be. They are about a half block taller than the player, but they slouch, so they are the same height. They have long arms that reach to slightly above their knees, with clawed hands. They wear a fur chest piece and shoulder pads to help with the cold of the Day.
They carry no weapons, as their hands and Zephyr like ability are all they really need for attack. They do far less damage than a Zombie Pigman, but are far faster (in both running and attack cool down time), and their attacks will push the player further back than normal attacks (possibly falling to their doom). If you are out of their reach, or close to a ledge, they will inhale and blast a gust of wind at you in an attempt to push you off. They do not travel in large groups like the Pigmen, but in smaller groups. The Zephyph have a movement speed that is nearly double the players, and can jump up to three blocks high, and 3 blocks far for a standing position (2 blocks high and 5 blocks far when running). They also have little health. (not as much as the Pigmen, but more than Overworld mobs)
The Zepyph believe that the Zephyrs are the incarnation of their god, meaning that they will attack you if you attack one, or if one attacks you (believing it to be an act of their god). They will also attack if attacked. The Zepyph are nomadic, and will travel to other islands using they're incredible speed and strong legs to jump to near by island (when doing so, they're physical boundaries stated above to not apply, so that they don't constantly commit suicide, but when they land from their super jumps, they are paralyzed for a few seconds).
They drop their armor, which has similar durability to a leather chest piece, but increases the players speed and jump height to 150% that of it's normal amount, along them to easily escape mobs and jump 1.5 blocks. If the player wears heavy armour along with the Chest piece, it will negate both effects of the armour (the Zepyph speed and jump height, and the other armours weight) making it best to wear leather with it, but doing so makes you more vulnerable.
Cool idea, and really well thought out. And quite detailed.
My only potential problem with it is that the behavior is pretty advanced (or at least a little advanced) compared to other mobs we have now, which Notch may not want to program, or he may feel that having one would require others (why not have human tribes on large islands? etc), which he might not want to program.
Some suggestions...
In complete contradiction of my only problem, zepyphs should talk, since they seem fairly intelligent. Not English, but they should have at least have a varied set of sound effects, a basic grammar for putting them together, and a set of 'phrases' for various situations, or when idle.
Or they speak Swedish.
Notch's choice.
Zepyph: *Insert insulting swedish here!*
Player who knows Swedish: WHAAAA- *murders zepyphs in fit of rage*
At least, I think that was Swedish in his blog... I don't remember what he said, to be exact.
(EDIT: And just as I go to check, the blog's.. server, provider, whatever is down.)
Also, where do they get their fur chestpieces from?
There is like, nothing furry in this thread right now (or in Minecraft, for that matter).

This can be easily done. And since no one knows their grammar... who would know if they did it wrong?
Construct a lot of phrases in the zephyph language (Fwee Squibble Quii, Azza, Fwee Squibble Oozi, Squibble Quii Ezz, etc.) then you can make a markov chain thingy (can't remember what it is called) to decide what to say. And-- despite markov chain thingy's usually have bad grammar, no one would notice.
Mob Idea: Angels
Behave the same as Zombie Pigmen but can fly and have bows.
Look like Main Character but with white clothes (robes?) and golden wings. Possibility of drop gold ingots on death?

isnt the abundance of winged things reminding everyone of heaven? everyone knows that notch rejects the idea of religious affiliated items in game
remember the fuss over the nether being called hell? yeah well I wouldn't go around saying angels, however renaming them as cupids (?) might deter rejection
look, not my problem, anyway my block ideas are out there, and my ghost idea is still standing so have fun guys
in a way cupids might work, a shorter humanoid mob which fires arrows at any mob which attacks it, however it wouldnt be that special and would be the neutral equivalent of a skeleton, as in it might drop arrows when killed
and grey, I know this is your thread and all but do not base the whole dimension on gold tools, I mean sure killing a mob with a gold sword may kill it faster or do more damage, but dont make it only killable with a gold sword
Thinking it through, I do think flying pigs would be a good addition for the Aether. It has no religious affiliation and is a nice surprise for players that get that far. It doesn't really have to be dangerous in any way, though they could swoop down and push the player around randomly. (like some neutral mobs on the surface sometimes push players around)

I once saw a chicken push a creeper off of a cliff. I never looked at chickens the same way ever again. That is of course until I needed feathers.

It's not really intended to be based around gold tools, but the idea has been around for a while that gold would be able to hit things that are intangible. Zephyrs = intangible, Aetherock = intangible, If Ghosts were put in they'd be intangible too so for consistency they should also be hittable with gold tools, even if they run away too fast for you to catch them to finish them off. Floatsand is a case where you don't need gold tools at all, they were just an alternate for convenience, but all you need to do is just put a block on the opposite side that you're going to hit it from and that'll keep it from moving no matter what tool you use.
Refer to this thread please. I'd prefer to cut out the middleman, and rather than gold being needed to gather material that can create enchanted items, just make gold enchantable.

Gum stone
also, glue would happen when sticky gravel is put into a furnace
Nope, sorry, I just came up with the perfect term for it: Rubblegum.
Smelting it gets you glue(or alternately, Tar) but it's a non-placeable item, it's only useful for crafting.
you place it on the side of a block like a normal block but it would be a thin layer, then you stick any block onto the glue side and it would stick
it would fall when you break it or attack it.
yeah, if you walked on top of it, your jumping would be disabled, if you put a block of sand or gravel on the side of it, the sand or gravel block wouldn't fall, even if not supported. Breaking the Rubblegum block wouldn't make the sand fall, but if the rubblegum is gone, the sand will fall if a cascade effect occurs. Rubblegum will fall if unsupported and not touching another block that is supported.

How in nether would you pronounce that? Zep- pif?
Whatever, I like the idea.
I thought of it as either Zep-if or Zep-eef.

ummm, no killing ghosts with gold, they are pointless mobs and they drop nothing
also golems may be put into the nether, they look like a pile of stone or cobblestone or whatever then they would come to life when in range
idk, work on them, in english atm and I have a headache x.x

Forum ate my post. I had a long diatribe on why angels aren't going to be added.
About winged creatures: Flying pigs is an old meme, and how else are you supposed to get them to fly?
