Blargh. I guess I should have posted a video instead.
The fact is, that IS floatsand. When you right click on it, it moves. Not accurately, but it moves. And it doesn't replace the original sand.
Can you get it so it moves when you left click on it too? And since you didn't have any normal sand in the picture, it was hard to tell.
Do you also have the limits on it stopping at the edges of a map chunk?
I can get it so that it moves when you left click on it, but then you wouldn't be able to mine it :|
Also, I'm planning on setting a timer of sorts to moderate how far it goes in any direction. How far should it go?
I can get it so that it moves when you left click on it, but then you wouldn't be able to mine it :|
The idea is that it wouldn't move if it was blocked by a solid wall, so you could mine it that way, and otherwise you'd need a gold shovel to be able to mine it without it moving.
Also, I'm planning on setting a timer of sorts to moderate how far it goes in any direction. How far should it go?
Basically, it should stop right before it reaches the edge of a map chunk, or when it hits the ceiling, so I suppose however far that takes.
I guess I should stick to my guns before I post any new ideas:
> Sticky Gravel: Allows you to stick sand / gravel blocks on the sides of a sticky gravel block without the sand / gravel falling down, however the sand would fall once attacked / mined. You cannot stick a sand / gravel block on another sand / gravel block. It also does not let any mob jump when on the block (exceptions being flying mobs), however you may still descend blocks.
> Bounce Stone / Rubber: Naturally occurring block in the Aether that would repel objects that collide with it, it would also allow you to jump much higher when you jump from a rubber block or you would bounce high if you jump onto a rubber block. You would be able to jump around 5 - 6 blocks using rubber. Minecarts or boats that ram into it would not break, and they would bounce off in the opposite direction without a loss in speed or velocity.
New idea:
> [NEW MOB IDEA] Spirit / Soul / Ghost: These are going to be one of the many pointless mobs that would end up in the final versions of Minecraft. These ghosts would be a pale transparent version of the human character model, and they would walk around the Aether like the old human mobs did. They cannot be attacked and they can be walked through, however they can't walk through blocks. They have a slight glow to them at night but they are not a light source (like spiders eyes). When they fall into lava or they drown in water or die from any natural cause (they can die from lava, water and falling) they would just respawn eventually (like a pig would after you kill one).
I have a new idea of a new ore that could only exist in the Aether. I will call it 'Peak Ore'. It will look like this:
Hence it being called 'Peak Ore', it is found in peaks of mountains in the Aether, in quantities of 3-5. This will be used to make Enchanted tools. Gold Pickaxes will be used to mine this. It is like redstone, and will glow when touched or hit. When it is mined, it will look like that of a Diamond, except it will be purple.

Actually, I rather like the general concept for all of these ideas, but I think the blocks would actually be better suited for the Nether, particularly when you consider the similar nature of Slowsand and the Stickygravel.

You cannot stick a sand / gravel block on another sand / gravel block. It also does not let any mob jump when on the block (exceptions being flying mobs), however you may still descend blocks.
So is sticky gravel itself affected by gravity? Either way, I'm wondering a little how useful this would actually be, it does seem to have a very narrow scope. I suppose for crafting purposes, it could be smelted into glue or something. If you have floating sand or gravel blacks that spawned in a map, they wont fall unless you actually break one of the block in the cluster, so perhaps the sand that is placed next to sticky gravel should work the same way. This would give you an option for creating collapsable bridges out of sand and stuff.
Either way, there are two things I do feel strongly about this:
1) This block would be much better suited for the Nether than the Aether.
2) This needs a new name. Sticky Shale? Glue Gravel? Gum Gravel? Glue Rubble? For some reason it just really feels tedious to say the name at 4 syllables.
> Bounce Stone / Rubber: Naturally occurring block in the Aether that would repel objects that collide with it, it would also allow you to jump much higher when you jump from a rubber block or you would bounce high if you jump onto a rubber block. Again, I feel like this would be better suited for the Nether, though I can understand why the function would be useful for the Aether. Probably because I am more inclined to think of Vulcanized Rubber, which is more functional than regular rubber, and with sulfer as the primary curative for this process, really does seem like it fits better as a natural occurrence in the Nether. (sulfer and brimstone, etc)

I actually kinda like the idea for the Aether, though I feel like they should be able to get hurt from gold weapons/tools. If this were the case, I think that they should probably actively run away when you attack them, but they aren't affected by any of the block hazards of Aether, so they can run over Aetherock without falling into it, run over ice without sliding, not get burned by crystal heat beams, not get blown by songstone, etc. and if you get too close to them, they'll actively jump off of a ledge to get away from you, so if you're stupid and follow them, you'll likely just die.
I say the best way to make an aether portal would definitely be marble, as it would be the opposite color of obsidian and I see no reason why you would be required to go to the Nether before the Aether.
Marble could be made by placing limestone in a furnace. Limestone can be found randomly or could be made by crafting seashells or something.
So no opinions on my Trickster mob idea (it could be a block too)?
I like the idea of an attack that messes up your vision, which might work well for applying it to the sentry things or the sky dragon thing I had been discussing with Razre earlier. The rest just seems like it would be better as a block hazard, but it would end up as a block that would be competing with Aetherock for the "camouflaged hazard" niche.
And of course, there was also the Siltt mob that someone suggested too which was another enemy that disguised itself and did something when you hit it instead of a real block.

I'm up to changing the idea, the main part was it's Poisonous properties. I also don't care if it's a mob, block, liquid or plant. It could be a mob that acts like a creeper mixed with poison and a porcupine, firing poison tipped quills when you get to close.
You know, it seems to me that the Aether is all about environmental danger.
Just saying. The mobs that are currently in the OP aren't that interesting. Some of the new ones are cooler (notably the siltt/crystal crawler, and the Sentinels, if they count).
However, I'm really surprised that no one thought of having birdmen or some such in the Aether.
I mean, I feel like the Aether needs a parallel to zombie pigmen, and short of something that looks like an angel (or not?), birdmen make a lot of sense in a sky realm.
Birdmen would be much less creepy and a little smarter, though. For example, they wouldn't bump into you if they can help it.
Being birds, they would congregate around 'nests', which appear on top of tall pillars, or in whatever trees may happen to exist.
Oh, and you can feed them. :biggrin.gif:
Nests would have a random chance of naturally appearing in appropriate locations (on top of tall pillars or in trees), so you could create a little birdman aerie at the top of your skyfort. Each nest contains around 10 birdmen.
---
On a different note, the Aether should have some interesting terrain features.
Hollow Islands:
Some islands look normal, but when dug into a few layers (varying from 1 to 5 blocks), are completely hollow, like an enormous geode. Large amounts of gems and crystals line the walls.
Crystal Overgrowth:
One kind of dungeon would be large, castle-like buildings covered in crystal. One false step, one wrong block, and the light will BURN. These castles are inhabited by crystal-based mobs.
---
Comments on already posted ideas:
Crystals:
Normal crystal should simply amplify light and bend it in unpredictable directions. You can achieve a more controlled redirection by putting crystals inside iron 'pipes', like so:
Straight pipe.
90-degree turn.
T-bend. Either two beams from the sides merge into one going out of the bottom, or one from the bottom splits into two weaker (somehow) coming from the sides. It depends on where the brighter lights are.
4-way splits stuff into THREE DIRECTIONS.
The orientation is probably determined by how you place it. Pipes will generally want to line up with as many other pipes as possible. Or it might be possible to rotate it somehow (right click it after placing it?)
Replace the crystals with glass for pipes that only direct light, without amplifying it.
Also, a 'gasket' block: where = straight pipe of your choice
This would make the pipes, you know, seal with the walls, which is kinda good.
I also wouldn't mind a way to transmit redstone signals through crystal light, as previously talked about.
------
Marble: Should be a rare-ish rock found in layers in stone. Often found in caverns. Should be used for portals, also for atheistic, but shouldn't be as hard to mine as obsidian. An iron pick can get the item from it, but to do it fast you need to use diamond.
--------
Temples and Sentinels: I really like these two ideas, but have little to say about them.
However, if Scrolls offer hints, Books should too...
-----------------
The block types are all good.

Just because it's an obvious gag doesn't mean there wasn't thought put into it. IT parallels not only the pigs from the overworld, but also parallels the zombie pigmen to a degree.
It would also allow the player to draw the conclusion that saddles, which work on regular pigs, could also work on flying pigs for a simple flying mount.
B: While I certainly wouldn't mind flying pigs for the comedic value, they'd be a completely different mob anyways. See above.
I did see above, there's nothing in your description of birdmen that wouldn't also make sense if you substituted flying pigs in their place.

I did think of that, though not of the saddles.
As for the latter:
The nests.
Also, they should probably have weapons (out of crystal?), though I didn't actually say that.
Wait.
Weapons made out of crystal?
That...might not actually be a horrible idea, now that I think about it.
Mostly, though, I was disappointed by the lack of serious content. My post was about much more than birdmen.
Although I disagree with the Birdmen/Winged Pigmen idea (as I think the Aether should be a realm of it's own and not just a parallel to the Nether), it does bring up the fact that the Aether needs passive/neutral mobs, at the moment, all there is for passive mobs are Aerwhales.

Seriously, my post wasn't just about birdmen.
But yes, the Aether needs passive mobs. Not just pigs (unless flying pigs count) and cows and sheep.
Maybe birds, I dunno.
The birdmen is just the only idea I'm interested in discussing right now. The crystals have been done to death and there's a pretty decent and flexible system for them that works through both natural and manual placement, I just haven't gotten around to updating the main post to reflect it.
I'm not really interested in the marble. I've already mentioned it in the main post, but there's not much point in getting into it, it's a matter of personal opinion and whether Notch ever actually decides to IMPLEMENT it or not. As for the turret/sentry, like you said, not much to say about that.
Why wouldn't flying pigs make nests? and why would the flying pigs need to be parallel to Nether?I was saying they drew continuity between all aspects of Minecraft.
Why should they have weapons? The Aether is supposed to NOT be directly hostile. You're up in the air, they could just push you off as their attack, or fly away and simply avoid you. I think they'd be the perfect passive mob for the Aether.

Meh, we've already discussed different blocks of Crystal, and we've come to the conclusion that normal Crystal can do all that it needs to, making the "pipe" ideas useless.
Also, I think an island filled with crystal would make it too easy to get them.

Yes, but you would have no idea until you dug into them a bit, and they're generally fairly small and relatively rare, so it's not like you can find minerals all over the place. And they wouldn't be full of crystals, they'd mostly be full of empty space. The crystals line the walls, creating awesome (but deadly?) visual effects.
There's still the structures overgrown with dangerous crystals...
