While I like the general idea of the currently explored map of the Normal Earth being rendered as a background below the Aether, the only problem I find with this is falling off of an island over a point of the normal map that is unrendered.
I'm supposing a new portion of the normal earth would have to be generated for you to land there and probably die, and you'd probably never go to that chunk of land again; thus taking up space on the player's computer. If that isn't the case, the whole loading screen between falling from the aether to the real world just to die, loading, and respawning seems to dull things down with that redundancy of the loading screen.
It seems much more reasonable to have some cloud cover like cloud blocks or just die when you fall past the clouds and respawn like normal.
Dude, this was already covered. If that section of the overworld map hasn't been generated at all, then it just shows up as "foggy" and you can't see anything. You still would fall to the overworld in these cases, it's just that section of the map would generate during the "loading screen" thing, the same as if you took a portal from the nether up to a section of the overworld that hadn't yet generated.
Anoher thing to consider is that if the Aether has a distance ratio to the Overworld that is opposite of the Nether,(even if it's 1:2, or 1:4 instead of the full 1:8) then it's going to take a LOT of travel to even GET to a section of the Aether that is above a section of the overworld that hasn't generated yet.

Don't kid yourself Grey, you know that somewhere, somehow, some asshole WILL do said action. Its like some law of the universe that if it is a glitch, some idiot will find it.
Anyway, even if you do get yourself killed falling out of the aether, it's either your own damn fault, or you made the proper mistakes to land yourself in the situation. its like the minute you step through the portal you have to be ready to accept the consequences that, should your portal occur at the top of a sheer cliff that drops you over a solid rock field, you knew what risky situation you were getting into when you mined that first block of lightstone in the bowels of the Nether. Maybe even when you mined that first block of Obsidian in the overworld! Or possibly even the moment you hit the goddamn new world button. Sitting through two sets of loading screens is in the disclaimer. and If it isn't, it should be.
Its like some law of the universe that if it is a glitch, some idiot will find it.
True that, you know in super smash brothers melee after 8 years some kid found a way to play as master hand as a glitch? 8 YEARS and found the last glitch of the game.
ON TOPIC ALERT:
still, even if there is a glitch, we never know where it is, how you get it to work, or how to abuse it for usually months-years and by then notch will have posted so many updates people probably won't even look at the Aether compared to all the other cool stuff there is.

...So your saying I can make my own slimes? Out of dead slimes?
*Digs up pet slimes grave* Don't worry my little pet...You will be back soon...
I suddenly had a reoccurring nightmare of reading Pet Semetary again.
like the nether, the aether should and will have safe areas of at least 10 x 10 blocks in which no aggressive enemies spawn, and there are no major drops or holes in the floor (to fall through)
also, with all these spawn point suggestions floating around I wanna make sure one thing is said, there are no spawn points in the aether thus meaning you cannot change your spawn to the aether (with the aid of a bed [not implemented])
I am pretty sure that one of you might have said that but I don't have time to read all the pages

dangit, why did you focus on the one section of what I said that DOESN'T MATTER? I'm not relying on that in order to avoid some sort of retarded glitch, I'm just pointing out that it will take a hell of a long time to GET to a point in the Aether in which the overworld 2d map overlay thing would stop covering, but even if they DO get there, it doesn't matter, because of the part of what I said in the beginning that I just now marked in BOLD
yeah, fog would probably prevent people walking too far from their portal
i mean, if it wasn't foggy people would go really far and find a nice place to start a new house or something then jump into the nearest sea, but I doubt anyone would make a shot in the dark (especially when carrying diamond tools)
besides, if a glitcher decides to glitch in single player it doesn't affect us, in multiplayer however ...
The AETHER is not what is getting foggy, it is only the 2D overlay that shows where you are above the overworld that gets foggy over sections of the overworld that haven't yet been generated.
also, you have to have the fog available in the aether anyway, I wasn't suggesting that before, because the rendering for some people would lag like hell (lol irony)
but only when you use the first fog setting would you be able to see the 2D picture of your world (underneath) as the other three fog settings would cover it in haze
Okay, I wasn't entirely certain since you were saying that it would keep people from wandering too far in the Aether. It might make people hyper cautious while moving over those areas where they can't see the overworld below them, but I don't see it actually stopping anyone from wandering over them provided they had an airship or something.
Everybody knows that Nether exists inside the sun
what we really need is a dimension which is inside the moon! One that is very cold, icy, and low gravity.

Why didn't you take at least partial notice of the point in my previous post that DID?

Well you can't ignore the fact that despite the 'direct damage' it would still make a great mob type. Anyway, if it's really an issue then we could have the blocks it razes the laser across burst into flame (the aether would rapidly extinguish the flames however) but if the player got caught in the path of the beam then the player would be hit by the flames for the second they existed and rather than actually taking direct beam damage would be taking fire damage. However, perhaps there could be three types of sentinels (going back to Notch's Prefixes) Where theres the red Broken Sentinel which has degraded over time and become lethally hostile, the Ancient Sentinel which is green in color and uses the non-lethal knockback, and the Guardian Sentinel which is the blue player made version that attacks hostile mobs (perhaps each type could have a uniquely colored laser according to their coloration?). Note that they do not attack neutral mobs, so you could not lure an angry ice dragon into a laser trap. We could even expand on the sentinels with the prefix thing, but three is kind of pushing it.
Besides that, I was mostly posting for comedic effect.
yeah, you might have intended it that way, but it felt like everyone was just following you right along into the "missing the point" category. And I did take notice. I just didn't have anything to say about it, other than the fact that fire doesn't work at all in the Aether, same as how Water doesn't work at all in the Nether. It would be completely inconsistent to have a mob that set things on fire up there anyway. Even when the crystals are aligned to cause heat damage, they never actually set anything on fire.

This needs to be added to Minecraft.
so.... the Aether needs to be added to minecraft? or do you mean the picture of teal and yellow blocks?

GreyAcumen has already posted a Moon Realm. Or maybe it was someone else... just search.
A good idea all in all, but a few things don't seem to fit the minecraft themes going on... mostly the over use of gold tools. Trust notch to come up with uses for gold, he has them planed when he made them from what he said.
And the idea of falling to the real world? I don't like it. you should fall to your death this place, to make the danger far more real.
Also your foes call for more AI then notch likes, remember he likes fairly "stupid" foes, or at least he said that.
Also bonus points on a good name
Honestly I would take ideas here and post them on the new place for sugestons, that will get notch to see the idea. remember that he wants something to work with himself, not something to just program into the game blindly.
although it's likely (almost definitely) been said, parachutes could make a great addition. If wind (however possibly implemented) came into effect in the aether, you could ride on the updrafts and be on your way, exploring. and were you to fall with one, you could land safely in the overworld. It could have four types: a slow, reliable one that doesn't break, a faster one that does break after hitting too many things, and a really fast one that breaks when you land, or when it bumps into only a few obstructions, and a powered one (incorporating the hot air balloon idea), offering fast, reliable speed, but at a slightly pricey cost.
the first one can be relatively easy to build, the second can be slightly more difficult, and the last one is the easiest.
@ [] @ <--(string)
[] @ [] = the first one, made of cloth. looks like a normal parachute. easy to use. it may also get equal high:distance ratio
[] = second one, kind of like a hang glider, harder to go up or down, goes further forward than up
[]
[] [] = a very crude glider that looks like it's covered in peices of leaves at the top, goes realy fast, but steering is very difficult and it breaks easily.
(the obsidian is just to add rarity, a hell block or something better could be added)
this is the powered one that looks like a giant, square hot air balloon. this one is invincible unless destroyed by fire, tnt, or a player.
I could add more, but four is enough.
also, it would be nice for the aether to have an effect of less gravity, due to a constant updraft. This could make you fall slower, thus avoiding death. and this could make for stepping stones in mid-air, or excellent traps.
it would ALSO be nice if the terrain is also more vertical, getting more dangerous the higher you go, before reaching a safe level at the highest layer. I'm not sure exactly how one would CODE this, but it seems possible to have certain mobs only active above certain ones.
I can just imagine falling lucky into a deep pit of water :biggrin.gif:

also, I seriously think it should just be: mount an Aerwhale, fly around
unless I see a really good thread on flying mechanisms or gliding mechanisms, im not really convinced :/
that being said, I havent bothered to look at grey's flying machine thread :/
