Maybe rubber could be something that occurs in Nether.

But we've already discussed that darkwood could be usable outside of the nether. Anyway, nah, if we want the Aether to be this good, the Nether's gonna have to improve too.
I agree with this, and it's the point I was making, is that with as expansive as the idea for the Aether already is, it can barely be justified by the current implementation of Nether.
I've basically been treating this thread as running on a budget, and the closer the idea of the Aether is to being "on budget" is akin to being more likely to be implemented. The "budget" available is equal to everything that was added by Notch when he implemented the Nether. If Notch adds more ideas to the Nether, then I'd treat the budget as being bigger, but if WE add things to the Nether, it's still cutting into the budget. At the most it's a break-even issue, and not something that adds to the available budget.

I see no reason to focus on weathering when it doesn't exist even in the overworld. Sand doesn't even move anywhere unless you at least break a block in a cluster first. If the Overworld implements a weathering system, then sure, otherwise no.
What I meant was during the erosion (weathering = type of erosion) process of the generation of the map. You don't actively see erosion occurring in minecraft because erosion occurs at a speed which is far too slow to be observed in real time, as well as the fact that even if such effects existed in minecraft, they would be impractical to express visually since minecraft is comprised entirely of cubes, and any observable effect would be miniscule and thus irrelevant, so it was implemented as something that happens before you spawn and doesn't change after that.
It could be safely coded that after crystal bearing trees grow (spawn during map generation) then areas near those may become subject to crystal formations as I suggested in an earlier post. Any further crystal trees growing on the map would not influence crystals to form 'downwind' of them, however if it was feasible, it would be interesting to implement crystals growing in the aether if you leave for a significant period of time and return, causing the map to generate crystal in a radius of whatever new or old trees there may be. This could even mean players structures unexpectedly receiving an additional layer to them, which i would find quite amusing. To prevent players trying to bring that effect into the overworld, the erosion effect on crystal trees could be limited to Aether's map generation. The overall nature of this effect could help one not only locate the trees themselves, but would increase the availability of crystal overall. Why, It could even be considered its own form of Aether specific Biome if you ask me.
Okay, that clears up a little of the confusion that I had over what you meant by weathering. I don't see any reason that this shouldn't occur, provided it was still to a limited extent. Remember I was also talking about crystals effectively taking the place of flowers and mushrooms as well, so they could end up generating in the places that just having the trees and weathering would have caused them to generate anyway. Ultimately it's just a different reason for them to be there.
Also, I don't think I adressed this well enough. Forget my whole refined crystal argument. The real reason I wanted that in was because It was going to be the basis of a player craft/mob I have in the works, but I'm still trying to get blender to work so I can give you a guys a mockup of some marble and marble pillar ideas as well as the mob itself. Anyway, the Sentinel thing I came up with, I have textures for the marble base and the crystal on top, I just need to model the damned thing. So yeah, about the refraction, It wasn't the main goal, so I can let it go. However, the laser projectile/beam I was talking about could occur generated off of each face under daeylight rather than randomly.
I'm not entirely sure that I get where you're going with this. you could just have it so it has 4 crystals on top of it and as it leans to one side or the other it causes more light to focus through one side of the crystal and therefor send a beam of light in that direction.
( I still do not know how you could come up with the laser effect rendering crystal pointless Acumen. Seriously, did I read that right, or did you really think that just because of a laser effect an entire block type would be rendered pointless? or was it that the danger was pointless? or that the laser was pointless?? What is the exact source of the pointlessness so that I may address it?)
I had been saying that just one type of crystal block could handle focusing, redirection, amplification and extension of light, in a beam form, simply by being arranged in specific ways, so a regular controlled laser of sorts could already be obtained through this method. So the only thing I was seeing to the "raw" crystal was generating RANDOM lasers, and having them random was the part i saw as pointless. (and if they weren't random, then there wouldn't have been any difference at all, so again its still pointless to have a second crystal block type)
If you want to create actual classic RED lasers, then those should be actual devices that use redstone and/or diamond along with the crystal, and not just simply be another type of crystal.

be careful, I might come back to comment more.
And unfortunately for you, you're a little late to the party. Most of the stuff you've come up with has already been at least touched on, and much of it has already been specifically addressed through the crystals natural function and without even needing any crafting at all, but merely needing to be placed right.
i am just wondering could you focus crystals to form a ''sun''light trap for mobs
so and burn woulden't hurt you when they enter the area that the crystals are focused on

Minecraft is awesome. Real men play Minecraft. Go Minecraft!
That part is still being hashed out. It would be a little overpowered if you could do something like that too easily, but it's still something that SHOULD be covered by the function of the crystals.
well then, I see that as an all clear to explain exactly what it does.
rubber.
it rebounds things that jump onto it with the same force deducted by 1 everytime it bounces on the block.
example: (this should be possible with the rubber block) a player jumps from a 10 block high pillar onto a block of rubber, the player would bounce up 9 blocks, then bounce up 8, then 7 etc.
once it reaches 0, the player would not bounce any longer.
you can walk onto the block without bouncing, but when you jump and land on the block you get boosted.
when minecarts crash into the side of the rubber block, they would be pushed backwards, shunting any carts in their way.
boats that hit the side of the block would be pushed back with the exact amount of force they hit the block with.
also, if you throw a block onto rubber it will rebound it off in the direction you threw it.
rubber could naturally spawn in aether caves, or on the sides of bodies of water.
if not, latex would fall from mined tree trunks, 0-2 per trunk at a rate of 45-55%.
There's only one type of crystal, it would have whatever properties concerning light that you decide. When broken it would have 90% change of dropping glass, 8% chance of dropping nothing, and 2% change of dropping crystal.
As for growing, I'd say yes to hedges or shrubs of crystal along with crystal replacing mushrooms and flowers. Additionally, if a crystal were placed against a wall, the crystal would grow in random patterns(Never going down the wall) up the wall until it ran out of wall. It would have a 0x1-0x15 bit, much like cacti, and when the bit gets to 0x15 it would add another block to crystal growth. Crystals could only grow up stone walls.
If you hate this idea, let me know, I'm not insistent on this being added.

Well here's the thing. I was thinking that in lieu of removing flowers (which are purely aesthetic to begin with) we could to this weathering thing and leave small plants in the aether, so theres more of that 'area of life' feel. even if crystals are supposed to be somehow alive, the idea of a crystal in and of itself is something not alive. The flowers would add something recognizable to the player.
I'm not entirely sure that I get where you're going with this. you could just have it so it has 4 crystals on top of it and as it leans to one side or the other it causes more light to focus through one side of the crystal and therefor send a beam of light in that direction.
No, the mob itself sits on top of the pillar because the mob itself is a red crystal which fires those beams i was on about for the raw crystal. From it's eye. like a Beamos. (think LoZ twilight princess and windwaker beamoses, not the evil cyclops gnome things from Ocarina of Time) the crystal is red because its evil. or corrupted. I was kinda trying to go with some sort of 'broken security construct of the ancients' kind of thing.
The idea was that a player could make a blue version of the mob using crystal and a really rare drop from the Sentinel to make their own which could only be placed on marble and would detect enemies within a certain radius and begin firing on them. This would be used as an area denial system to enemy mobs. the only difficulty would be to make sure it had some form of light hitting it, as it is made of crystal which is related to light manipulation yadda yadda, and they could only be placed once, as breaking them kills the Sentinel and the player made Sentinel doesn't ever drop anything. They would naturally have relatively low health, maybe five to four hearts, but would not run out of durability. These would be good for making mob traps, keeping creepers off your front doorstep, and maybe keeping track of real time, as they could make a pleasant glasslike chime on the hour, but other than that, if placed properly, would add a nice aesthetic to a player's home and provide a trophy to their exploits in the Aether. keep in mind that this mob is fairly balanced, as it only does 1/2 heart of damage with that crystal laser every second, which would give a skeleton plenty of time to fire on them.
I had been saying that just one type of crystal block could handle focusing, redirection, amplification and extension of light, in a beam form, simply by being arranged in specific ways, so a regular controlled laser of sorts could already be obtained through this method. well they could still do that and I'm not on about two block types anymore, I'm just saying that crystals could begin to shoot lasers (after a certain light threshold) which would turn a small crystal structure into a hazardous area, and add to the difficulty of collecting crystal as well as its value. but If you bar none think its pointless then there's not much else I can do.
Okay, I'm going to assume that when you say lasers, you're talking about a beam of light that will damage creatures that touch it.
What I've been saying is that with what has been discussed for the crystals, they would already generate beams of light, and if close enough together would amplify that light, and then once the light was amplified to its brightness limit, it would then amplify the heat of the beam to the point at which it would cause damage and function as the type of laser you seem to be talking about.
yes it would require multiple crystals to get a laser working, but it just makes sense that something like a laser shouldn't be easy to build. If you're looking for something that can be generate a laser from a single block, there can still be crafting recipes involving diamonds, redstone and crystal to accomplish that.

Except for the exact numbers on the drop rate, and whether Crystal would actively grow, what you're suggesting here is pretty much where the discussion on the crystals has been going. The one problem with letting the crystals grow like cacti is that they could be farmed just as easily as cacti at that point, which negates the any rarity or difficulty of growing them. The crystal tree method would men that players would have to obtain saplings, and then specifically work and getting them to grow inside of the Daey lightcycle, so no guarantees at getting a crystal tree instead of a regular tree.
perhaps you could be able to smelt crystals into purer crystals?
and perhaps you could smelt them with diamond to create a crystal whose beam of light doesn't dissipate over time.
You should activate Aether Portals by sprinkling lightstone dust in them (ie. by right clicking with it). Another thing: since, according to the diagram in the OP, distances in the Aether are further than on earth, you should be able to use the overworld to travel longer distances in the Aether; this could also make it easier to get to and from isolated islands. I think this works from a performance standpoint, too, since there's less land and whatnot to render with only floating islands.
Also, since this place is so damn bright, I vote we nickname it the Luminescent Aether. Get it? Like the luminiferous aether?

Okay, I'm going to assume that when you say lasers, you're talking about a beam of light that will damage creatures that touch it.
direct examples of what I want to accomplish with the Sentinel can be seen and . The design incorporates both the floating eye from the Windwaker version to the 360 degree coverage and marble pillar aspect of the Twilight Princess version. The eye would simply be a crystal block turned on its edge with an 'eye' on one side that follows the player constantly when they are in range and fires the beam at them if the Sentinel is a hostile one. The crystal 'eye' on the enemy version would be red and the 'eye' on the player made friendly version would be blue. They place like a block, but behave like a mob that is rooted to the spot. do you get it now? As for the 'heat' values rising for the light rather than the actual lazer, fine, whatever.
Adding Crystal has made me think of a mob disguised as crystal Except there would be black streaks in it. Once struck, said mob would lift from a little pit the size of one block and pounce at you until it's either killed or left the attack range.
Sort of like the zombie pigman of the aether, except it would be a 4 legged spider-ish thing with crystals on its back called a siltt.

Songstone could have many uses if you use your imagination, like, placing a snowball into it could make it fire it at a higher velocity than when you would have thrown it. Or, maybe putting out a fire, or even making a short flamethrower burst with the help of Flint and Steel. I also think it should be able to push gravity obeying blocks, not just knock them down, but be able to push them to the side, possibly letting you have a wall of sand that you can drop incase of emergencies. I think it should also be able to effect Floatsand as if you were hitting it. With imagination, I think Songstone could become an incredibly useful block.
When I think of something that could be a portal to the Aether, I honestly think of a golden staircase. Led Zeppelin reference aside, I think it could be a feasible idea. What I am thinking of is a staircase made of gold (in the same way you can make one made of stone or wood now, but with gold bars) three blocks high, three long, which would effectively require 36 gold bars. As for the portal part, perhaps a flint and steel coated in lightstone dust that makes white flames? I really didn't think this through past the whole stairway to heaven part.
Also, cloud spires are necessities in any landscape like this.
