For falling from the Aether, I'd suggest something like falling off the Overworld map, where you just fall off into an oblivion of :Blue:ish blocks where you die instantly when hitting the ground.
This could also contradict the fact that 'The Aether' is supposed to be heavenly, where there is only happyness and no death, but i'm sure you could use something like lightening where if you fall off a cloud will just completely own you.

I don't like that idea, because if that happens, anything that you have with you is lost forever into the oblivion, if you fall into the Overworld, your stuff just lands where you land.
okay, here is my rough crystal , naturally spawning crystal, when mined it looks shinier (this is an idea on how they look and act, like cobblestone and stone)
yeahhh, I dont like have a noticeable border around my 16 bit square, so I sorta blend it in :s
Most of the art is done by Firehazurd. However I haven't seen him around lately. . .
OH GOD! HE CAUGHT ON FIRE DIDN'T HE!? He's a Firehazurd and therefore hazurdously flamable! DON'T WORRY FIRE! I'LL SPREAD YOUR ASHES IN A FLAME RETARDENT LIQUID!!! *sob*
All original art is done by Firehazurd, all the stuff that is recolored versions of what is already in minecraft is my stuff.

I got a perfect colour, and it looks pretty unique too (pattern wise), this is a quick rough pixel art but I will post it when I make it
I personally was leaning more towards the white, since it's supposed to break into glass when it doesn't drop a crystal block from mining it, but go ahead and show me your take first.

Actually, falling is one of the biggest dangers of the Aether. Aetherock, Songstone, and quicksoil are all blocks that make it easy to fall off of islands, and the Zephyr and Swet also can kill you by making you fall. Falling is such a CONSTANT danger in the Aether that just making it always autokill you seems a bit much. By dropping you up in the top of the Overworld, you still have a pretty solid chance of dying when you hit the ground, but it's not 100% absolute.

the mined crystal would look much clearer, as the natural ones are pretty cloudy in colour, the mined ones would be similar (but not the same) as glass, in the fact that they would be very see through, lemme work on it now

guh, noooo. Don't make a distinction between natural crystal and mined crystal. I just got done explaining why it's pointless to have two versions of crystal when 1 version can do the job just fine.
And you might have missed it, since I had edited to add it to a post I made, but can you do a larger version with an actual transparency instead of a gray background?
here is the small version of the mined crystal, notice it is clearer, can be used as a more coal friendly glassalternative however the edges are still cloudy
and btw, crystal (when cut and cleaned) is far more reflective and can refract light better, these could be used in the laser ideas as well

When it's REAL crystal, yes. but just look at how realistically diamond is handled in minecrft. There's no reason not to say that the crystal that is in the Aether just naturally grows into a polished reflective/refractive/focusing surface.

fine :tongue.gif: I guess you are the maker of the aether (cough, and chromee :biggrin.gif: ) so you can decide, but then should the first or second crystal design be used?
also I am unsure how to retain the same shape while inlarging it, it becomes all fuzzy x.x transparent background I can do tho
Yes it is, and it's the point I've been trying to drive home over and over and over again, that there's no reason to go into the idea of there being a difference between natural and mined crystal in the context of minecraft unless each version is going to serve a specific use. And I've already shown that one version can handle the focusing, the amplification, the extension and the redirection, so there's no need to have 2 different types.
Now that doesn't mean there shouldn't be specific crafting recipes for reflections, or for even BETTER extension, but that should be an actual device, not just "crystal type B"

If anything, I feel I should take the title of "guardian of the Aether"... or maybe just "bouncer"
And I rather like the "foggier" version better, since it draws a much clearer distinction between crystal and regular glass but a lot of that will depend on how the larger image looks.
also I am unsure how to retain the same shape while inlarging it, it becomes all fuzzy x.x transparent background I can do tho
um... depends on what program you're using, I use photoshop, and I pick the "choose nearest neighbor" on the resampling option. But I also start out with larger base images to begin with.
go to minepedia and follow the links to any of the blocks, and they'll show you a large image of the different block that is about 2 - 3 times larger than what it appears as in the game.
Yeah yeah, okay, I get it, I'm coming across a little heavy handed. It's not easy to be diplomatic when between the time i start to reply to someone and the time I'm ready to post, I end up wish 6 more posts that also need replied to.
Meh, even if you didn't say it, still needed to say it to myself. I was just going to credit you with trying to keep my massive raging ego in check.
And yeah, i definitely need a break for today, if I missed a pun like that, no matter how poor taste it was :tongue.gif:
I do feel accomplished though. This natural crystal/refined crystal issue was really bugging me. I couldn't understand why people were getting stuck on the need for both types, and I couldn't seem to convey why the Natural Crystal could BE the Refined Crystal, which was very frustrating, but now I think I have that explanation clarified adequately, even though it probably still has a ways to go before it's completely solid.
Slowsand. What does this replace? Nothing. What special uses does it have? Maybe makes drowning traps work a little better.
Actually, slowsand can be used to replace a stone pressure pad in front of an iron door to make a one-way entrance.
I think it's considered a glitch amoung certain players.
edit: Also, I havn't tested it on mobs yet. I should probably work on that.

Edit: wait, you're right, it does work, it had been listed as not working on mobs before though. Also, it probably doesn't work on spiders.
as you mentioned, it does seem to be more of a glitch, and this particular aspect is still ultimately only useful for making traps.
Another function is making boat docks, to help keep your boat from breaking, but really, cloth should do the same thing. The point you raised is valid; Slowsand does have a small purpose, but still nothing that really affects the gameplay in any majorly exploitable manner. You could just as easily not use the slowsand and just SLOW DOWN as you approach your docking point.
crystal should be able to be crafted into lens and mirrors, like so
[] [] []
(or you could rotate or mirror it) would make a diagonally-cut half block that could reflect and/or refract light,
say, L\ (I'll use that to represent it) could have light hit it from above, which would result in it being reflected at a 90 degree angle
| <--light
|
L\--------->
and it could possibly be semi-reflective, so that you could hit it from the other side and it would go through, and were that ray of light to merge with the one being reflective, it would increase the power of the beam of light.
. |
. |
--L\--->>
but first it would have to be possible to HAVE beams of light in the first place.
perhaps a swiveling lantern (attached to the ground or wall)? []
[glass]=lantern (for when notch releases them) or possibly torches/lightstone.
this could be possibly turned on or off by using a redstone torch instead.
and when right-clicking it, you could be able to control it, and it could have the direction snap to a (hypothetical) grid, so that the angles could always be right, and you would never have to constantly adjust it.
if you could possibly have any means of artificial light fade over time (but go further than they normally would) when made into a beam, you could add power to it and increase the brightness.
after all that, you could use the light sensing implication combined with all this to make an awesome security system that uses tripwires of light to detect things. Or you could the swiveling beams of light to fight zombies and skeletons in the middle of the night!
OR (maybe this is a bit too long of a post?)
you could use certain items combined with the lantern to make lasers, which have a beam of light that goes as far as the eye can see, and can injure mobs from afar (but of course, the laser beam would only be one block wide, making mobs harder to hit)
there are so many possibilities! (rolls on the floor laughing maniacally) I COULD RULE THE WORLD.
that is, if it's even possible to CODE these things.
and if you read that whole post, congratulations. I have a cookie for you if you just break that wall sssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

I am basing my arguments on what "IS", not what "might be" if we're going to go on "might be"s then I'm going to say that the Nether "might be" a place that ends up never getting any new blocks and only gets a few dungeons added to it and more enemy mobs, and only adding a few more blocks like naturally occurring TNT (can't be harvested because hitting it sets it off) and mossy cobblestone for the dungeons, and Darkwood growth (but that's all) and nothing that can be of any real use outside of the Nether.
But we've already discussed that darkwood could be usable outside of the nether. Anyway, nah, if we want the Aether to be this good, the Nether's gonna have to improve too.
LIKE I SAID, FORGET REALITY. I'm saying that this formation pattern you suggest around trees seems uncondusive to a fair representation of the possibilities in the aether.
I don't even get what point you're trying to make here.
me either, I forget really. I probably should've left that bit out.
Okay. You know what? I didn't want to have to throw down like this, but if you're going to cast the gauntlet, I'll ****ing pick it up; Do you see an edit button on the opening post? Does anybody else see it, other than me? I'll give you a hint; unless you're a mod or an admin, the answer is no.
If I felt like being an asshole, and believe me I'm not afraid be one, I wouldn't have to add a goddamn thing I didn't want to. Even NOT being an asshole, I'm still going to use my judgment to decide what should and shouldn't go into this, and unless I have every single person in this thread specifically oppose my idea and specifically support an opposing idea, I wont feel even the slightest need to go back on that. Quite frankly YOU, and maybe one person who kind of agrees with you, doesn't meet that criteria.
Furthermore, lets get one thing out in the open here. I don't take any personal offense to people disagreeing with my concepts. I value other people's ideas provided they have some sense of balance and proportion, and even when they don't, refuting their ideas has often been good inspiration for refining ideas further or coming up with new ideas.
What I do have a problem with is the way you've CONSTANTLY been harping on getting credit for the "use of your ideas", and in pretty much every case none of it has actually come from you. All I'm seeing right now is you trying to claim some sort of prejudice on my part so you can force your idea through and see your name in the opening post for a "credited to" section.
Alright. I'll admit I've sounded selfish and probably didn't mull over what you'd typed as well as I should've. But I'm not after credit. I don't care about that, not anymore. I just want the idea implemented. I'd quite frankly not care at all if you took full credit for the whole thing. After all, nobody but Notch gets credit for this game in the end. That and maybe his 'loyal community'. So yeah, in so many words, **** credit, I want it added.
So your logic is that because there is already enough life, that we can kill off trees without tipping the balance? How about just like Nether is a place of death, Aether is a place of life? I could add that the opening post along with "place of light, air, water, and ice" but I hadn't really thought that was necessary.
nah, its implied enough. Besides, I'm trying to work with the plant concept now, not against it.
Cute, except I've already pointed out that Darkwood grows in the Nether, and only grows on the bottom of the Aether, if at all.
Hey, don't call me cute. And to your statement: Meh.

I see no reason to focus on weathering when it doesn't exist even in the overworld. Sand doesn't even move anywhere unless you at least break a block in a cluster first. If the Overworld implements a weathering system, then sure, otherwise no.
What I meant was during the erosion (weathering = type of erosion) process of the generation of the map. You don't actively see erosion occurring in minecraft because erosion occurs at a speed which is far too slow to be observed in real time, as well as the fact that even if such effects existed in minecraft, they would be impractical to express visually since minecraft is comprised entirely of cubes, and any observable effect would be miniscule and thus irrelevant, so it was implemented as something that happens before you spawn and doesn't change after that.
It could be safely coded that after crystal bearing trees grow (spawn during map generation) then areas near those may become subject to crystal formations as I suggested in an earlier post. Any further crystal trees growing on the map would not influence crystals to form 'downwind' of them, however if it was feasible, it would be interesting to implement crystals growing in the aether if you leave for a significant period of time and return, causing the map to generate crystal in a radius of whatever new or old trees there may be. This could even mean players structures unexpectedly receiving an additional layer to them, which i would find quite amusing. To prevent players trying to bring that effect into the overworld, the erosion effect on crystal trees could be limited to Aether's map generation. The overall nature of this effect could help one not only locate the trees themselves, but would increase the availability of crystal overall. Why, It could even be considered its own form of Aether specific Biome if you ask me.
Take note that, at suggested drop rates, even if you brought a diamond pickaxe you would need to mine through a significant amount of crystal before you ever got anything workable. So yeah.
Also, I don't think I adressed this well enough. Forget my whole refined crystal argument. The real reason I wanted that in was because It was going to be the basis of a player craft/mob I have in the works, but I'm still trying to get blender to work so I can give you a guys a mockup of some marble and marble pillar ideas as well as the mob itself. Anyway, the Sentinel thing I came up with, I have textures for the marble base and the crystal on top, I just need to model the damned thing. So yeah, about the refraction, It wasn't the main goal, so I can let it go. However, the laser projectile/beam I was talking about could occur generated off of each face under daeylight rather than randomly.
( I still do not know how you could come up with the laser effect rendering crystal pointless Acumen. Seriously, did I read that right, or did you really think that just because of a laser effect an entire block type would be rendered pointless? or was it that the danger was pointless? or that the laser was pointless?? What is the exact source of the pointlessness so that I may address it?)
ehhhhhh, I was thinking about this one for awhile but i need some opinions
rubber is a substance that repels anythign that touches it with the force that is applied, I dont expect you to make this block a natural occurance because that would be too far fetched, but I would like the trees to sometimes drop latex upon destruction, thus adding four latex in a grid = 1 block of rubber
I am not going into detail until I get the all clear >>
