A cannon is a creative idea for entry into the Aether. I think it might be a bit too comical. The lightstone gate is the best idea I've heard yet, but I love hearing new ideas.
I really like the idea of making the Aether portal on the ground like a well and pouring water into it. Call it an Aetheric Well. Since you want it to be a bunch of floating islands you will need an easy way of getting from one to another, so why not craft a boat/airship using a unique block type found there, maybe a special type of tree that can only grow in the Aether or a special type of 'levi-stone'. To add danger perhaps a Harpy mob (I don't see any mob examples in here so I'm making my own as I go along) that shoots arrows. A floating puffball that when hit drops wool, non-violent.
Also, I'm not sure what use there would be for such a thing, but the idea of a dark lamp struck me. The opposite of a torch or lantern, it would project darkness instead. *shrugs*
Nothing wrong here, but you stated yoru reasoning as portals being "dark & mysterious" and I'm pointing out that there is nothing dark about a Lightstone portal (I think it SHOULD be mysterious, so I don't really object to that part)
I just suggested that instead of using portals made out of lightstone found in the Nether, you could use a regular cannon to make Aether more accessible and less of a mythical-type realm and more just a fantasy of floating rocks.
All a cannon does is make it silly, and also undermines a lot of how the danger that the Aether has would be perceived by players. Much of the danger is from the ease at which you can fall to your death. If you got blasted up there by a cannon, how do you expect players to take the danger of falling seriously, and how exactly are you going to get back down without deliberately falling off, which is supposed to be something the player is specifically trying to avoid?
And wouldn't using cannons be building on game mechanics that actually exist?
No, not really. Except for exploits in the game code that allow players in minecarts to not be injured by explosions and TNT to not break blocks while in water, there's very little official support for Cannons in Minecraft at all. However Portals were SPECIFICALLY added into Minecraft.
And I'm confused as to what that first part is about entirely.
I was objecting to your assertion that Aether is not distinct enough from the Overworld and should merely be implemented as a Biome, rather than a full Realm, and that Nether has these large differences that qualify is as a distinct realm. If you had read the opening post a bit more carefully, specifically "Primary Features of the Aether" you might have understood it better, but I will sum up:
- In Aether, Daylight is bright to the point of being blinding, and the visibility is as bad due to brightness as it is in the overworld during night due to darkness.
- Fire cannot be started in the Aether.
- Lots of new blocks built around floating, falling, and wind.(I'm still working on adding these to the opening post)
I really like the idea of making the Aether portal on the ground like a well and pouring water into it. Call it an Aetheric Well.
Yes, I'm leaning more towards that everytime it gets mentioned, but I still have issues with only half of the player being covered by the portal. Perhaps a portal "well" should require 4x4 square that is 2 blocks deep with a 2x2 space in the center of it. unfortunately getting out of it would be difficult at that rate. also, I like the visual image of the Lightstone Portal looking like Heavenly Gates to help tie the Hell/Heaven aspect into the theme, even if it doesn't need to REVOLVE around that theme.
Since you want it to be a bunch of floating islands you will need an easy way of getting from one to another, so why not craft a boat/airship using a unique block type found there, maybe a special type of tree that can only grow in the Aether or a special type of 'levi-stone'.
i've already got a thread that is focusing on building ships, and am working on including support for building airships as well. Firehazurd has a mob idea that would provide drops that could supplement this with even easier travel. I'm still working on getting these into the main post.
To add danger perhaps a Harpy mob (I don't see any mob examples in here so I'm making my own as I go along) that shoots arrows. A floating puffball that when hit drops wool, non-violent.
Mobs are being suggested, and Firehazurd came up with another mob similar to your puffball idea, but with hostile-ish abilities. Again, working on getting it added.
Also, I'm not sure what use there would be for such a thing, but the idea of a dark lamp struck me. The opposite of a torch or lantern, it would project darkness instead. *shrugs*
This has been suggested specifically, and while I agree it should exist, I'm thinking it should be something found in the Nether, though perhaps it could also be found on the UNDERSIDE of the floating islands.
I got a question though. Could you build portals from the Nether to Aether? (and vice versa?)
With how he ha this set up and planned, no. Water can't exist in the Nether and fire can't exist in the Aether. Since they can't exist in each other's areas you can't travel directly from the Nether to the Aether or visa versa.
I don't like the idea of it "being responsible for the islands staying afloat" You're trying to retcon the rules of minecraft. I say leave connour's idea as close to what it originally was as possible

Bahaha, with all these ideas it is almost evil of me to suggest more.
Floating Bricks: I was thinking hard about this one, a brick that when pushed, it will keep moving a speed, can float over nearly anything and will keep moving until it hits another block, the energy can also be transferred to another floating brick so that the first one stops and the second one starts flying away. They can be pushed from any of the brick's four sides and they can be mounted mid flight by jumping on them.
These are like a floating platform, not sure if they are mineable since they will move when you hit it, however if you corner it then maybe you could :>
Uses: create an escallator to different parts of your base, a floating brick bridge that will help you avoid mobs and other players in SMP :>
Whatcha think?
I'll be honest, I usually find your ideas to be a little too "SO COOL!" and not enough "makes sense and is balanced" but I really LIKE this one. If you hit it (or activate it using redstone dust/switches), it will travel continuously in the opposite direction from the side you struck. If it hits ladders, minecarts, torches, etc, it will break them and continue moving. If it runs into a solid block, it will come to a stop and "strike" that block once, which will cause unsupported sand/gravel to cascade, set off TNT, and also cause a chain reaction when it strikes another Floating Brick. Mining it requires that you trap it against a wall so it is blocked from moving away from you when you hit it.
That's really good, it can be used a bunch of different ways, but requires creativity to use it in any way that is useful.
Oh, one additional note is that if this thing travels beyond the point at which any map chunks have been generated, it will be destroyed. It will not break if you leave it in a map chunk that has already been generated though.
To make them useful and reconizable for what they are (and also make them harder to mine when you first find them) they should be more towards teh tips and edges of islands.
Awesome idea to create a new thread, I love it and I hope this idea is put in Minecraft eventually.
Can I quickly credit the ideas which I already suggested in the Ether thread? Well, I noticed a few of them being thrown around a bit without them listing names, so these ones I (Connour) suggested (as known, I am competitive about suggesting blocks and mobs, also I haven't found any of these ideas posted before I posted thus I credit them to me):
Darkstone - Creates a dark glow around an area so enemies can spawn, and can be protection against the rays of light from the daytime in the Aether
Floating Bricks - Pushed on one side it will fly in the opposite direction, it flies for an infinite distance but can be stopped by solid blocks, can activate tnt or break non blocks like torches
Cloud - Once stepped on it will evaporate after 3 seconds, does not reform after evaporating
Echo Stone - Amplifies footsteps by 3x, if a player walks on it nearby enemy mobs will be notified of presence, and it can be used to determine whether enemies are close
Lightning Brick - Damages player or mob for 2 heart points + 1 heart point (leather chest plate), 2 (gold chest plate), 3 (diamond chest plate) or 5 (iron chest plate). Mined with a wooden pickaxe (rare block spawn)
Chaos Rune - Lightstone + Darkstone = Chaos rune, when placed it creates a holy area that heals the player, and also damages any enemy mobs which enter the holy area (limitation, one working rune block per map)
Goliath (mob) - Guard mob in the Aether, it will only attacked when it sees the player mining the lands in the Aether or attacking the mobs, it is around three times the size of a human and can crumble through every type of block while it chases the player, his melee does 2 hearts per attack but it is slow and not always accurate.
Oooh! I think I just figured out the Portal to the Aether thing. So it begins with a new stone in the Nether, I haven't figured out a good name for it yet, so I'm sticking with Gravstone. So Gravstone is a mineral you'd have to search for, it would be pretty rare and would be an environmental hazard for the Nether. Once you're within a certain range, the Gravstone would become your primary gravity source, flipping your world literally. Gravstone could be used to make paths on the ceiling to gain access to hard to reach Lightstone.
As far as the Portal. You would have to make a 1x2 deep pit in a 3x3x3 block of gravstone, drop a water source in the bottom which would then start flowing upwards (this could be the only time liquids react to the gravstone to preserve our code friends' minds) and flow all the way to the Aether. We could make it so the flowing water becomes a glowing shaft of light graphic. Follow the magical water to a new world! Nailed it!
Excellent job (I feel bad now cause I thought you meant GRAVESTONE and then I was like, so you basically revolve the portal around death, then float up to heaven)
Also, new mob idea:
Golden Grove Sprite (super rare spawn) - Fire's grove sprite idea, totally and exactly the same yet its a gold one, still mixes with the other ones, very rare spawn and drops a golden apple when killed (not always however)
This means there will be trees in the Aether, but these trees will be more special, I will think about it after i finished my Graphics assignment @[email protected] have to hand it in tomorrow :<
Now I'm just confused as to what you're talking about. Aether. The Greek word, no?
I have one suggestions here.
First is simply to reach this place via cannon. Hop in a cannon, light it up, and get blasted into the sky. Okay, maybe not as simple as one TNT, but in that kind of way. Portals seems like a very dark and mysterious thing, while Aether/floating island world should be very light and lighthearted. It also fits in with the dropping out of the sky to appear in your corresponding space on earth (alive in all cases, mind you.)
I would suggest the method of doing this as making a powerful (3 TNT required,) cannon, placing a stone over the TNT (possibly a special or specially crafted material,) and letting yourself fly into the sky. Upon arriving at aether, you'd be on top of a cloud block (more on that below,) where you could start moving around the world (possibly requiring you to stack some blocks up to reach an island.)
Also, a findable block should be a "skystone" which is similar to lightstone in it's light-giving properties, but casts a straight pillar of sunlight vertically down (similar to the real sky,) and is sky-coloured. This would only be found on the bottom of islands though, making it a bit of a danger to get.
The only thing I dislike about this big suggestion is how it could easily blur with simply another biome. Why have an entirely new world that's up in the sky when you can just have a biome or just a generated landform feature that has the same feel? Have the terrain generator generate big basins with floating islands above them, along with hills, valleys, plains and mountains. I'd much prefer to be able to have such a world fully interact with the world on the ground, rather than an entirely new place that I have to go through a complicated procedure to get to, only to have it separated from the rest of the world.
If you ask me, the Nether makes sense. It's a radically different world in it's clear danger and completely different landscape. In comparison, this sounds like it'd be a lot better simply as a new landform to be generated (along with mountains when the height limit gets bumped up to allow for real mountains.)
Quite frankly, the "Aether Daytime = overworld night level of visibility (but due to brightness, not darkness), and Aether Nighttime = Overworld day level of visbility" should by itself be enough to clearly distinguish it as a separate realm, if you're still not convinced, go check out some of the mobs and dangers of the place that were discussed in the old thread.
Second, it's a Portal made out of LIGHTSTONE, which means it's going to be brightly glowing even in the middle of the night, are you seriously trying to tell me that you don't see a brightly glowing golden doorway as something that should lead to a "heavenly area of light"? Also, you offer a CANNON as an alternate method of accessing it? Cannons don't even properly exist in Minecraft, Portals DO. Lets build on game mechanics that actually exist and/or fill niches, not just use this as en excuse to petition for new weapons. (heck, airships at least build on "ships")
Also, there are already a ton and a half of Light-centric blocks; torches, lanters(coming) jackolanterns, redstone torches, lightstone blocks and hellstone, we really don't need more, and there are plenty of really DIFFERENT blocks that have already been suggested for this place. Just give me a bit and I'll have them in the main post.
Oh snap! I didn't even know about that Greek mythos stuff whan I suggested the name change! Holy crap I feel special!!
Wow...
Reading the title alone, I thought it was going to be a pretty silly idea, but after having read it over, it actually sounds REALLY cool.
I like the portal idea, honestly. [] [] [] []
= Lightstone, in this case.
[] [] [] []
So like that?
I personally prefer that idea over getting to it via airship, seeing as it seems like it'd be too convenient, in a way. Not to mention it really does create the yin/yang feel in both aesthetics and logic with materials. I really like the glowy-stone-for-a-portal-doorway idea since you know... 'heavenly' type place. Aether is also a very good name, both in meaning and relation to Nether.
I'm not sure an over-saturation of light would be a good thing, however. Maybe have it look like fog? Sort of like the lower settings on the render distance (unless that's what you were getting at and I just took things too literally).
kk, Fire has just perfected another route, place 8 grav blocks on the ground, leave a hole in the middle, and place water into the middle then it creates this upwards light portal. Then again, another obsidian-like portal does seem fair, since Lightstone is just as rare as Obsidian in my opinion.
I am now making Darkstone a very useful tool to avoid the over saturated light, it will protect you from the rays and it will be over abundant in the safe zone areas (to such an extent that you have enough to mine but still not enough to over spawn heaps of monsters) and you mine it when you want the ability to place it. Overhanging structures and islands will also protect you from direct sun damage, thus the value of a house increases (the house that features a roof).
Also, maybe spot fires when you place certain materials, like wood, so the trees that naturally spawn in the Aether have to be made from some sort of unburnable wood (this will be like the eternal fire bricks, see, opposites ftw)
We could make it so the flowing water becomes a glowing shaft of light graphic. Follow the magical water to a new world! Nailed it!
I'll be honest. I think we're getting a little too heavy on the number of specialty blocks that are coming up here, and also getting a little too complex for the rules for implementation. Gravstone also sounds like something that should be found in Aether, and not in Nether, and once you've been "flipped" how the heck do you get off of it again?
Right now, I'm behind Connour's Floatstone idea, and the Aetherstone(previously Etherstone) and Songstone that Firehazurd came up with, Quickstone(which was mentioned in another thread intended originally as a Netherblock, but I think has far more potential as an Aetherblock), as well as the Darkstone(I forget who mentioned it first) but that the Darkstone should be naturally occurring in Nether (even fairly common in some places), or maybe the underside of Aether Islands.
Nether only has 3 special "Nether only" blocks, and none of them are complex (one burns, one lights, the last slows the player down) if we add darkstone to be another Netherblock, then that's still only 4 Nether only blocks. I don't want to go over that number too far, and we already have 4 Aetherstone blocks just from the top picks that I listed, and I still agree that some sort of crystal should be included here too (though maybe this could be covered by actual glass blocks, and just have the superbright level of Aether Daytime cause the glass to exhibit crystalline heating/magnification properties.
The theoretical update to implement Aether should not require adding double the number of blocks that Nether did. At this point, we really need to consider mobs, friendly and hostile. I'm thinking that there could be little flying minicreepers (fleepers? flypers?) that land on sand blocks and blow up just one sand block, but it's enough to set off a cascade, and they'll ALWAYS try to do it when you're standing on unsupported sand.
EDIT: Either way, I NEED to get some sleep tonight. So don't expect any updates for the next 8 hours minimum, and when I do update, it'll probably be on the blocks I just mentioned, and on the Mobs that Firehazurd already has done (Aerwhale and Zephyr)
didnt you read my post, darkstone ish mineeee >:ooooo
but seriously, if spawned in the nether, I still want it to be able to protect the player from sun damage in the aether :>
also, I mentioned quickbricks in the ether post, only to find somebody bumped a quick stone suggestion from like two months ago >< I thought that was my own idea :/ (oh wells)
No, I am not going to have the player damaged simply by being in the light, I don't care how bright it is, unless it's a thing attached to being directly under a glass block AND with the overbright thing going on. All darkstone should do is make it easier to see in "Aetherday" and also limit the Aether mob generation teh same way torches limit enemy mobs at night on the overworld.
Oh good someone else posted. I didn't wanna edit.
ON TO THE IDEA!
Going with trees and crystals in the Aether, why not combine them? CRYSTAL TREES! I am a huge sucker for rock-like trees, sucker for anything that is non-organic that still grows really. Like a robot that evolves and thinks for itself. Or a tree made of CRYSTAL! Yes, and this tree only blah blah blah Aether.
ATTRIBUTES! (I'm a leeeeettle excited by this) IT'S GOT CREEESTAL LEEEVEZ! The leaves are actually what makes this tree valuable to the peoples who seek to conquer the Aether. For every leaf block broken you have the chance for the crystal tree sappling of course, but a slightly larger chance of getting a preserved leaf. And dammitall I lost where I was going with that. ****ing distractions and there shinyness... Blargh. Anyway, shiny = sappling and maybe shiny which may do something incredible other than looking nifty.
glass (if nothing is placed on top) will make a damaging radius around it that will hurt whomever walks into it, darkstone can nullify the damage allowing the player to successfully mine the glass and remove it :>
how about that?
and grey, I will happily make mobs for this thread, it will be an honor ^3^ (you said you want mobs, I will provide mobs, I will >:3 )
Also, I'm not sure what use there would be for such a thing, but the idea of a dark lamp struck me. The opposite of a torch or lantern, it would project darkness instead. *shrugs*
