I don't think that having 8 blocks in the Aether equal 1 in the Overworld is that great of an idea. That's like slow-travel, since most of your stuff is likely in the Overworld. I don't think there's any real need to move great distances in the Aether either.
Having 2 Aether blocks equal 1 Overworld block (as GreyAcumen suggested earlier) is okay, but it still lacks of any real purpose. I think that a 1:1 ratio makes the most sense in conjunction with the Aether's "fall into the Overworld" feature.
I really hope notch doesn't try to replace the aether idea with his dreamworld idea. http://crafthub.net/2011/05/27/4497/
The aether seems far better and more thought out.
that's been brought up before,(SO MANY TIMES) but that still assumes 2 things; A) it assumes that the Aether and Nether are physically connected, which is not at all verified, and it assumes that the Aether is the same amount above the Overworld that the Nether is below it.
Well when you think about it it makes sense, if the minecraft world is round;
You go down and you travel , when you come up because of the rotation you go further than you actually walked, same for the aether but in reverse
This was already discussed a page or so back. It would make sense if the Minecraft world were round and Nether/Aether were in the same world but this is not the case.
2 things- 1 obsidian is very hard to get but glow stone is to easy get. Diamond blocks would be what I would make it out of. Crazy? No which leads to part two. Minecraft survival mode is to survive in shelters overnight. If there is no night, or enemies, we would camp in the Aether forever, that is why it should be out of diamond or not be added or at least add enemies like giant Gahst like pegasaus things
2 things- 1 obsidian is very hardpretty easy to get since you only need a bucket to gather the lava and water needed to make it, but glow stone is to easyactually harder to get than obsidian, but is much easier for players to specifically choose to gather, since they will always be able to tell where to find it, unlike gold and diamond that are scattered randomly around the overworld where they can't be seen until you stumble right onto them or by using strip mining tactics.
Diamond blocks would be what I would make it out of. Crazy? NoAbsolutely crazy, I mean unless you cheat or have no life, have you ever even SEEN the 90-126 diamonds you would need to make enough blocks for a portal? Most people barely gather enough diamond to make 1 or 2 blocks and that goes straight into pickaxes, armor, and swords, which leads to part two. Minecraft survival mode is to survive in shelters overnight. If there is no night, or enemies, we would camp in the Aether foreveruntil we inevitably fell off and killed ourselves, just like how we can stay in any place on the overworld without ever needing to worry about running into hostile mobs once we've placed torches in the area, that is why it should be out of diamondmade from glowstone, or not be added or and at least add enemies like giant Gahst like pegasaus thingsZephyrs and Swets
you had a couple of typos in your post. I corrected them for you.
I love the idea of the Aether, but I like this take on it better.

I had an idea. Firstly, I think that you should be able to plant a gold apple in quicksoil. This will produce a tree that has a possibility of producing any of the three woods. This tree, when its leves are destroyed will produce gold ignots. It can produce between 6-8 peices of gold. So that you can not "hord" no sapplings are dropped. It takes 6 gold to make a gold apple so it is only a minor gain.
My second idea is to do with the swets. I think it would be good if the swets dropped swetballs simularly to the way slimes dropp slimeballs. Although slimeballs urrently have no use, they have been promised one. I have made a forum with possible future uses for slimeballs. The swetballs will have the same uses, except for my second idea, in which you will gain no falling damage with swet mats. Please read my forum for this to make sense. Here is a link:
I've had a reasonable amount of input to that thread, and there are a number of things I'm still not totally behind, particularly all of the tools, and the need for Aether tools to be able to mine any Aether blocks, as well as a handful of mobs/bossmobs that will apparently be able to deal direct damage to the player, but the ideas that they've used from this thread have been really well done from what I've seen.
I'm probably fully supporting about 50-75% of what the mod is doing, I'm waiting to see how well another 10-20% actually functions in practice to form an opinion on, and then the rest are just a few small things that I just don't like at all.
Would it not be a bit too easy to reach the Aether as soon as you have access to the Nether?
I mean the Nether can be a ***** to access due to the time it takes to find and then mine the obsidian, since it also requires you to have found diamond for the pick - maybe there should be some other additional challenge to just mining lightstone before reaching the Aether? Like, instead of water, you've got to use some rare material only found in the Nether that's one-use, like a rare gem or torch you can find in a dungeon chest or from something like Ghasts. Having to kill Ghasts for it would be a challenge!
As well as making it slightly harder to make the portal, you could also make the portal "deactivate" when it's night time? And instead of a portal you combine gold and the rare item in some way as to get a pedestal;
:biggrin.gif: :smile.gif:
...diamond being whatever the rare item is, and the pedestal itself taking the area of a standard block but looking like a little fountain / well. (http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y135/T ... eyFont.png) It depends how "heavenly" the Aether is meant to be if it's aim is to be the diametric opposite to the "hell" of the nether, what with the need to take gold tools and with flying angelic pigs etc, you could almost get away with angelic pigmen to match the zombie pigmen? Or angelic chicken-men with bird heads?
It still acts like a portal, but you're teleported by standing within 1 square of it rather than inside;

...and it'd give off the same light as a torch.
Or just dismiss this entire brainfart - it's still a good idea having an opposite to the Nether and I embrace the idea of having skyworlds to explore. :wink.gif:
you dont need the diamond you can make a mold then obsidian

Bedrock = -60?
Top of map = -60?
(dont know the actual number off the top of my head)
So if as people assume the nether roof is the overworld base, then the overworld roof is the Aether base :tongue.gif:
Just a suggestion, explains the equivalent distances

only the name sucks >.>
Notch has got to add this and the New Nether. I fav'd the thread..
Indeed, i was going to point it out but i would not bother wasting the time with someone who obviously does not play enough minecraft to know.
No, the name is badass.

The mod seems to me like it adds too much pointless stuff. I won't be able to say for sure until it's out, though.

Retired StaffThis is a suggestion :tongue.gif:
very complex and thought out.
My ONLY problem, you aren't just changing and adding a portal to the aether, you are adding like 50 blocks and monsters.
Think of the nether, Simple = good
Ghasts, Pig Zombies
Netherrack, Glowstone, Soulsand (i think that's all the nether stuff)
Aether:
2x Aether mob
3x New blocks
This is less of a possible suggestion the more stuff you add to it.
This is more of a mod
I support the aether mod
