Nothing has been set in stone, but basically the player could stand on them and possibly offer some sort of guidance system for them to vaguely follow, and alternately they could be killed for their gas bladders to make airships with. The other possibility is that if an Aerwhale and a Ghast both happened to spawn in teh overworld at the same time, the Aerwhale could be made capable of reflecting the Ghast Bombs back at the ghast, resulting in an incredibly rare, but utterly epic battle.
Only your ANGULAR velocity is different, which is never perceived while in the Nether/Overworld/Aether. The linear velocity still remains the same, and is the only velocity perceived by the player, so stating that there are differences in velocity is very inaccurate.
Consider this:
Two players are in a race from a starting point to a finish line both located in the Overworld. One player takes a detour through the Nether while the other stays in the Overworld.
We make the assumption that they are both moving at the same velocity (walking speed.) The player traveling through the Nether makes it to the finish line first. Moving at the same velocity as the other player, he has traveled the same Overworld distance in a shorter amount of time. This violates v=d/t, so the assumption that they are both moving at the same velocity is false by contradiction.
The players may have the same velocity relative to their repective environments, but they have different velocities relative to a common fixed point in either dimension. It's all relative.
And if that image doesn't explain it to you enough then QUIT ANYWAYS.
That image proves nothing about the velocities. If the distance is different and the time is the same, then the velocity MUST be different. You can't argue that the distances are different while still arguing that the velocities are somehow the same. Fact. Physics. Story. End of.
How am I retelling what you said? I'd already mentioned two days ago that the circle model was wrong. The velocities thing was a summary of the proof by contradiction I had already written above (also before your post.)
If anything your post is a simplified retelling of one of my earlier ones.
Edit: Let's get back on topic. I believe hovering arrows were being discussed before the distance and velocity can of worms was opened.

You are wrong. Your error lies in measuring d incorrectly. If the racer was going from the US to France, and one racer tunneled through the center of the earth to go directly to France, you wouldn't measure the distance AROUND the earth between those two points to determine his velocity, you would measure along the path that racer took through the center of the earth. similarly you would measure the distance THROUGH the nether that the racer takes. Hence velocity is NOT affected.
Yeah I was writing it for the more relaxed members. And as I posted earlier, why is anyone still discussing this? Notch has already released pictures on a sky dimension he's working on. The Aether will become obsolete.
lol. I saw those shots, as well as notch's comment about how much trouble it is giving him. I also see no aerwhales, no swets, no aetherock, no galestone, no floatsand, etc. No offense to notch, but it's far more likely that the Aether will be making "skylands" obsolete.
Don't get me wrong I love this idea, but if Notch can make a sky dimension without copyright issues he would probably choose to do that over crediting you.
And also, you've come up with brilliant ideas but is it so easy to program all the mobs and blocks you have created? If Notch an experienced games designer is struggling to create just the sky dimension how would he create aerwhales and swets? You seem very confident in the Aether but do you have the experience to create it? And if so why are you not working on it? I'm studying a course in Games Development I don't know about your experience but if I've learned anything I've learnt that building games is very very difficult.

Uhh... there's no copyright on the Aether idea...
He could very easily take EVERYTHING from this thread, pretend he made it all up himself, and there'd be nothing anyone could do about it.
Personally, I don't care if anyone gets credit, so long as the idea (or core concept behind it) is implemented.
Conflict? Averted?
According to a recent live interview. Notch has allegedly stated that his 'skylands' realm will be a 'dreamworld' type place.
The source is here but it is in swedish, and what i know of the interview's content i have heard from other sources. (such as reddit)

You have a point there. Taking the detour means that the person cut a portion of the track, therefore the distances are not equal and the linear velocities can be the same.
Using the circular model (which as I pointed out before is incorrect) my earlier statement is true instead:
I think he's saying that you have a higher angular velocity (same linear velocity, walking speed) in the Nether because you're closer to the center of the world.
They're achieving the same angle with different times, and therefore their angular velocities must differ. The situation can be seen as a matter distance or of velocity when time is present.

Yes, but that comes back to my original argument, where I pointed out that since the player never perceives that angle, nor that it can be proven to be present, using angular velocity, especially since you didn't specify it as angular in your initial statement, would be inaccurate to apply to the situation. Though if you were to assume that the nether and overworld were physically connected in that circular method, then yes, you would be correct.

I did specify it as angular in my original statement (I was attempting to clarify the circular theory even though it was wrong.) Then I went on to trying to prove it as linear in the next post for some reason (I don't know why, it was late at night.)
With the circular theory wrong, the velocities are in fact the same and we have to deal with interdimensional shortcut shenanigans (like a mouse going up and over a 2-D maze or someone traveling through a sci-fi wormhole.)
Heres my idea: I believe that it would be easier, and extremely cool to instead of hunting aerwhales for their flying bladders, be able to ride them. You could just be sitting on a cliff, jump off onto an aerwhale, and steer it like you would a tamed pig. sorry. just a suggestion. (And if you'd like, they could also drop their bladders leading too airships and such)
Edit: I forgot too mention. is it just me or does the Aether look like that floating island place from avatar? o.o
I have 2 problems with this, but I like the idea in general.
1: I think that if you add too many things to the Aether, like airships and a ton of different kinds of blocks and temples and 4 mobs and... etc.... you will overshadow the Nether. Better to just update along with the Nether, so the Aether doesn't seem superior. There's got to be a balance.
2: Why do people think this will ruin Minecraft? Ok, this isn't a complaint. I just think it's funny how people in the vote are like "OMG THIS WILL RUIN MINECRAFT." Let's remind you: it's not like it's required to go into the Aether. If it's in the game and you don't enter the Aether, it's not like it will ruin your game AT ALL.

1: These guys are also working on a total revamp of the Nether that's meant to be added in conjunction with the Aether. You can check it out in the "New Nether: survive this" thread.
2: Exactly. Don't like it? Don't use it. Only question is why not like it?

good point. Well, Control it by moving like you regularly would. you get the point XD
Or like boats.
IMO, saddled pigs should be controllable.

otherwise you should need to put special bait on a fishing rod to guide the pig around as you ride it.

Since when does lack of reins stop horses from being controllable in most other games? Oblivion horses don't have reins, IIRC.
