I like the idea but I think the over use of golden pick axes and shovels are a bit much, we don't use it in the Nether. Maybe make the really important stuff golden or something. Other than that I think it's great and I'm glad Notch is considering it.
are you talking about the Nether, or the New Nether? In the case of the New Nether, the gold tools offer immunity to the blight that usually messes up the durability of other tools, Midas Tears and Zombie Pigmen Dropping their tools occasionally also raises the accessibility of them to make it a bit less restrictive in the Aether. As for the Aether, it's not that you just arbitrarily need the gold tools to work on blocks, but basically due to a property of Gold Tools being able to "strike without striking" stemming from how silver s used for werewolves, ghosts, and vampires, gold would basically cary these properties, but in a more generalized manner of being able to strike insubstantial blocks and mobs and to be able to strike blocks that would normally be "activated" by the strike, without setting them off.
Hmm, that's odd... In hindsight, I may not have been reading very carefully. I still like the Galestone thing though, but whatever.
Anyways, I think it a good idea to bring up the topic of airships. I've seen them being discussed yet their existence seems rather hypothetical. If I may, I'd like to help with that. Please refer to this thread for general building, but I will be expanding on it. http://www.minecraftforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=330013&start=30 credit goes to Dakota2063
Based upon that main idea, I'd like to introduce another concept: upgrades. Some upgrades will be simple, like a larger balloon attached for higher altitude capabilities. Others will be more complex, such as a mini farm.
Upgrades:
(this list is a work in progress, so suggestions are accepted)
Torches- torches will add several torches around the ship, sufficiently lighting it.
Bigger Balloon- a bigger balloon will allow you to gain and loose altitude faster
Flight Fins- several fins sticking out of the side, allowing for better control of the ship
Chests- multiple/a chest(s) around the ship (dependent on size/model)
Better Furnace- increases burn-time for furnace materials that power the ship
Furnaces- adds furnaces around the ship
Workbench- adds several workbenches around the ship
Garden- adds a garden, must be tilled and planted on (cannot grow trees)
Large Propellors- makes Propellors larger, causing ship to move faster
Tree- adds a single spot for one tree; it can be replanted
Gas Bladders- instead of hot-air furnaces, uses bladders (from either Aerwhale or Ghast) infinite usage, however produce gas slowly, making altitude adjustment slower
Galestone- replaces propellors with galestone, infinite usage, however you move slower
Light Frame- replaces the normal frame with golden oak wood, making it lighter and faster
Cannons- will add several cannons
To youre idea for the Airship. I think it's a good idea... But makeing blocks that arn't a tool (Like the steampunk air baloon) Would be extremly hard to do. However. It could happen with a recoded sand like block. As it can be in between block spaces. It would work by as it is steered, the blocks it is made up of could replace the nearby air blocks therefor "Moveing" Kind like a vacuum effect. Removeing air so blocks go in to fill it. But nevertheless that's a great idea. Especielly in the inner ideas such as cannons. And that sparks way for NPCs that can build ships and sort of fight yourse. And there could be a spawnreset thing inside of it. For purposes of the Airship being like youre home so you can explore minecraft more freely without loseing youre home... My favorites block for you!

Well well well, welcome, to my lair, chell, and a potato, huh? Ohhh i'm really scared. So you're the one's who wanna take me down, ahaha, good luck. You're joking, you are joking!? I can't believe my eye! You're kidding me, you've gotta be, why won't you just die!
How about the Aether TNT implodes? Eh? So, instead of blowing outward, items would be sucked into it. And it could be non-lethal, so it could be a reward for getting to the Aether. But, though, it will still have to be more powerful than a blocks explosion resistance (like regular TNT).
Since when does the Aether even have TNT? If you're talking about making it from floatsand, then the obvious effect would be to have the TNT float in whichever direction you hit it before exploding
Gus umposian idea is good, it could float then implode. I think what he is getting at is, the Aether would have a different atmosphere causing TNT to have a different effect. And maybe the floaty TNT woulden't implode in the real world. And float less distance. And also, do you happen to know what the block numbered 26 or 25 It kinda looks like a redstone block or the Ruby block from the More Ores mod (Wich I don't have :/) in the singleplayer commands block list? Mine is broken and I think it has a conflicting mod so I can't check...

I just thought of some stuff, cause. Imagine when you start making nether portals in the aether and aether portals in the nether! thats when it gets fancy
Yes, imagine something that was already thought of and addressed in the first 16 seconds of the concept of the Aether, where Water was proposed as the activator for the Aether portals, preventing them from being activated in the Nether, and fire was proposed as being disabled in the Aether, preventing Nether portals from being activated in the Aether.
Fancy. Right.
But, Ice and Fire blocks..... They could still mess up some stuff.... But that's for cheaters. (AKA me)

I don't see why using floatsand would in any way make it implode. nor what purpose that would serve.

I couldn't understand what you were asking about here or why you think anyone would know about what you're doing with single player commands. Why would you ask about that here instead of at the forum thread for single player commands?

I doubt they'd actually mess it up that much, and it would probably be easier to code the prevention of placing fire directly in the Aether and Making Ice not melt to water in the Nether than to add the code to support Nether to Aether/Aether to Nether Portals.
I just haf an idea for an Aether creature, Golden Sheep. When his they drop golde wool which can be made into a golden fleece, on par with what wooden armor would be in the normal world but very tough in the Aether.

The Isles, an arctic Sky Dimension that should be used along with the End.
That makes me wonder... perhaps the Nether and the Aether could have different physics?
That'd be pretty cool, I could see the Nether having the height and distance you jump half if the normal world, also you could fall 50% faster causing more damage. But in the Aether it's the opposite... Thar'd be cool.

wow... You seriously want to make it so that you need ladders, half blocks and stairs for EVERY single block that you want to move up?
Lets not do that.

No. That would be introducing a new mob, a new block, and a new item all to get a recolored version of leather or gold armor? (wooden armor doesn't exist)

At least take into account the GENERAL concept of different physics.

Well the New Nether has the Blight.
Doubling Gravity in the Nether just to reverse it in the aether isn't the best of ideas, but performing something along the same strain of thought as the Blight (not reversing it, but something Aether universal that's unique) isn't that bad of an idea.

1) Your right, maybe your character can't jump as far foward and falls quicker.
2) It wouldn't just be recoloring, you'd know that if you read the part of my post that I just bolded the quote of. I know, I said it would be 'on par with what wooden armor would be' as in it doens't exist but that's how weak it would be.

Flowvein should look like a more transparent water flowing in four directions and flows like a liquid 3 blocks away from source and push the entities such as sand gravel mobs and the player 8-10 blocks away.
I had an idea involving the Aether on another thread.
Winged Men (probably thought up 100 times before)-
Angel like warriors who fly around the Aether killing all hostiles and just keeping the peace there. They can go through portals to the Overworld where they attack monster mobs.
