Ok, now I have some ideas.. the gem itself would be called Orichalcum, named after a legendary mineral said to be harder than Diamond. It would have the same resistance of Diamond armor and equipment, but it would be immune to the effects of Midas Tears and Nether corruption (it would be about the same as using a diamond item in the normal world) and may possibly resist the effects of lava (or at least the individual gems would be). However, it is extremely rare and requires a diamond tool (or maybe something made from Nether materials) to mine. Any suggestions? Balance issues? Improvements? Does the idea just plain suck?
The name is horrible. I get so tired of people suggesting these goofy generi-tite, and uncreativ-ium names, at that rate, just cut to the chase and call it "Mythril" or "Unobtainium" and be done with it.[/quote]
I didn't make up the name. I heard it from a few other places, and even looked it up to confirm that it was, in fact, legendary. I was just trying to think of something with good defense, and that was the only thing I could think of. Granted, the name is a mouthful, and most people probably can't pronounce it, anyway. I still think the Aether should provide an armor that's as strong as diamond, but resists lava and midas tears (you probably wouldn't be completely immune to lava, but it wouldn't wear out any faster, and you wouldn't catch on fire. Drops made from it wouldn't get burned up, either), even if it's made from something else. I also thought maybe of a Floatsand (or whatever the solid version was) armor that maybe has relatively low defense, but lets you do floaty jumps, with possible height and fall speed determined by how much you're wearing.

That have to be cool if you melt it or something you can make fly armor that gives; jump height, lesser or no fall damage and maybe more.
Cupid
Not exactly hostile because it means well this flying cherub soots arrows at the player until struck, were it will stop and fly away. If a PC is hit by an arrow, they can't attack anything for a few minutes, making this a hard mob to kill. Drops a few cupid arrows which tame any mob hit by them for 1 day-night cycle.
Angel tears
Like midas tears, only they heal you and repair your armor and weapons, you need a DIAMOND bucket to carry it, but it will also DE SPAWN (not kill) any zombies, nether creatures or skeletons it touches, If it touches a zombie pig man, it will turn into a pig man who fights for you and follows you out of the nether (armor can be given to him), finally, mixing it with lava makes hollystone which can be made into powerful demon-killing tools of destruction.

I really never expected to say this, but that's the first take on an angel/cupid mob that I've actually liked. As I understand it, the arrows it fires does no damage, but you are no longer able to deal any damage to mobs? I'm not totally sold on it yet, but it's definitely a lot closer than any of the other attempts that have been made on the concept.

LOL, you did so well with the cupid mob, but this is horribly overpowered. Even if you couldn't carry it at all, it would still be ridiculously overpowered.

(love The aether idea here is 10 000 to you)
I thought I already had Hoverglass Armor listed under he Floatsand section? I just mentioned a few posts earlier that It could be possible for something like that.
Changed my mind about part of my Ether idea: instead of having it be attracted/repelled by certain blocks, I think it might be easier to make it attracted to more of itself, so you would make those floating water tunnels/bridges by strategic placement of Ether source blocks, but you could still "mold" it around normal blocks during placement, kinda like water currents, and it would retain its shape once those blocks are removed.
GLASS armor? Sounds....silly.
Some more sensible material would be better.
Sure, as an ARMOR it basically would have extremely low durability, possibly even less than leather. But the whole point of the hoverglass is not to protect you from damage, but to extend the distance you can jump, which is actually an incredibly powerful ability. Getting both the better jump AND decent armor would simply be overpowered.
Quote from sniggyfigbat »
Also, no it isn't mentioned in the OP. Actually, there are a couple of block images missing; most noticeably flowvein, crystal and, obviously, hoverglass. Would be nice to get images for them at some point. No pressure though. Good things come to he who waits.
Actually it is mentioned, but only as part of the crafting and smelting sections under floatsand.
And yeah, I've basically been letting this thread slide in favor of getting the New Nether up to its full potential. While I'm not totally behind the Aether Mod, they are generally coming out with good ideas. I find the Nether update suggestion just... underwhelming in every aspect.

To be honest, I'd be more likely to go with a block that stops the flow of all liquids in a specific radius around the block.
Heck, that might even be a perfect function for the sponge to make a re-appearance. It wouldn't absorb source blocks, but it would stop the flow of any block inside of its area of affect, and if there was any liquid that was flowing into that area of effect, it would simply be stopped as if disappearing into a void instead of being blocked and trying to flow around the space.

Also, I'm sure there must be something we could do with pigasi (plural of pigasus). Personally, I envisioned them dropping some kind of golden feather, which, as you say, would have special levitationary properties. Maybe we could have a winged helmet ;-P
The pigasus is already supposed to be the simplest method of unhampered transportation around the aether, (stick a saddle on it, and let it fly you around the aether to wherever it wants to go) and also gives access to pork for healing and feathers for making arrows. Giving more features to that would actually start being imbalanced, and you would have to limit the frequency that they appeared to offset that.
It's better to leave them as a common filler mob. Useful, but not so essential that it should be rare.
Erm that's what the sponge does now. It just stops water around its range. How would this be any more realistic than the current sponge?
My thoughts about a sponge is a more of an absorbing effect. If it's placed underwater, then the topmost source blocks around it are lowered instead. This would be the same as taking water with a bucket in a non infinite water source. Water would flow down 1 block into the square where the sponge is. This effect would increase with the number of sponges.
Another effect of sponges would be that water will not flow between them.
Example
[] []
Maybe sponges could just have that effect only. I think my first idea would be more unappealing than realistic. Having sponges work together to absorb water between them is a much more balanced and realistic way to use sponges.
Erm that's what the sponge does now. It just stops water around its range. How would this be any more realistic than the current sponge?
In unmodded minecraft beta, the sponge doesn't do ANYTHING. In classic, the sponge gets rid of ALL water blocks within its range. My point is that only FLOW blocks inside of a sponge's range would be removed, but the SOURCE blocks would remain AND have their flow disabled. This would allow you to control water flow AND create floating water "bubbles" just by placing your water around the sponge. It wouldn't remove the source blocks, it would just keep them from flowing anywhere.
If you placed it in water, then it wouldn't do anything at all, because the source blocks are already not moving.
Besides you couldn't control a sponge by itself. You can't just attach redstone to it and automatically it becomes non absorbant. Really the only purpose I see for this is to temporarily stop water sources. Actually that sounds useful. It has very limited uses but useful.
For instance you couldn't really control water flow after it has went past the source block. Since its only purpose is to decide water or no water. It's not like you can decide whether water should flow to a specific point. Well that effect can be acheived with fences
Honestly, I like the Ether idea better than the sponge thing. The idea here is to have a water-like substance that floats in streams of spheres or both or something (I prefer streams, but spheres would be cool too), if I'm correct. A bridge of sponges would be required to make a random floating stream, and that just wouldn't look good. I get that it seems a little useless to turn into an entirely new block type, but I'm sure we could expand on it; maybe you swim much faster in it, and undead creatures (skeletons, zombies, zombie pigmen) would fall through it (or maybe even be hurt by it, who knows)? Maybe it could be placed in the Nether, making it invaluable if you find yourself on fire? Maybe it could only be carried in a gold bucket? A 'holy water' type thing would have quite a few uses, you must admit. But definitely not healing, that would just be overpowered. Oh, I just thought of something else; maybe it could be USED in the Nether, but not placed? Clicking on any mob with a bucket of it could do a lot of damage of something (and unfill it of course), I dunno.

Yes, it can be found in streams and spheres, and can be made into various other formations with some skill,
Yes, you do swim faster through it, and I've considered making you unable to drown in it (or at least take more time to drown)
Making hostiles fall through it might work, but making it hurt them on contact might be OP (damaging force fields, anyone?),
Having it only be obtained in gold buckets sounds like a good concept,
and making it usable in the Nether might work, but maybe it would have gravity and serve as a substitute for regular water with limited range per source block, or something. Still not sure if it should hurt hostiles, maybe only ones from the Nether?
Also, I need some ideas how it would interact with other liquids; should it just float around/on top of everything else, or should it react with some of them somehow?

Just have regular water in Aehter. H20 - the basics of life. I dont' really see why one should invent special "water" for the Aehter or why everything in ahter/nether should be special.
Why not have regular stones in hte Nether? Or water in Aether?
It's not like gravel and lava in Nether - which both appear in hte Overworld - take away anything from the Nether. If anything, it implies some minimal connection ad familiarity.
There would be both water and Ether in the Aether, like how there's supposed to be both lava and Midas Tears in the revamped Nether.

glass armor - not only would it be shattered wiht a single hit, it would be very uncomfortable (and would look silly being all see-trough)
Then you don't know much about glass. It can actually be very hard and as long as you mold it into the shape of armor, then it would be just as comfortable as regular iron armor.
Also chain mail, though not in the game without hacking, is see through and works fine. Effectively you would just make the armor have an outline and nothing more. Also, Diamond armor undermines any other point that could be made against Glass not making sense as an armor.

I can't remember, but wasn't there going to be midas tears in both the Aether and the Nether? Or did that get changed? Refresh my memory, if you would be so kind.
Midas Tears was originally proposed by someone as an idea for the Aether, but I nixed that, but pointed out it would work well as a Nether liquid.

I like how the Aether makes two different armors and the new Nether makes two new tool types. Although a InvEditing greifer could use Aether armor and Nether Raze tools to become an unstoppable greifer. Unless s/he gets banned. :wink.gif:
