I think I might have explained that wrong. What I meant was that, for the Aether to look down on the overworld, it has to correlate directly; Even if the falling thing is a one way portal, each Aether block has to be directly over an overworld block so as to make the impression of looking down on the overworld convincing. And then there's the problem of progressive world creation; If you venture further in one direction in the Aether than you have in the overworld, then Minecraft has to create new chunks for both the Aether and the overworld, which would result in massive lag and general performance trouble. Finally, it would result in the issue of seeing the overworld from the Aether, but not visa versa, which just feels a bit silly to be honest.
If you notice, the 2d render idea was never taken out of italics, it was merely a thought, not specifically nailed down as a full fledged idea. Even then, the idea was to have a 2D render created during the loading process when you travel from the Overworld to the Aether. This would be displayed on the bottom of the Aether (and for a 2;1 distance ratio, it's just a matter of having 4 blocks all textured the same as a single block) and when you get to the edges of where the 2D render covers it doesn't bother trying to get a new render, it just lets the 2D render fade to white.
What if the aether spawned free floating bubbles of water that hung in the air between islands? Some would be small, just consisting a few blocks, others could be veritable mid-air oceans.
Some would be wrapped around islands, or have chunks of rock or dirt suspended in them. Others could be almost completely pure.
You'd be able to swim in them, or ride boats on top. You'd have to be careful not to fall out the bottom though if you go for a swim.
i like that concept, but how would he bubble be managed? just have it so it has no flow at all?
I had an idea like this, but instead of water, it was a new liquid called Ether or something that wasn't affected by gravity, but could be attracted to or repelled by certain blocks; otherwise, it would naturally form into spherical bubbles. It wouldn't have currents per se, but you could move quickly in it and would either take longer to drown or not drown at all.

Lumastone: Similar to Glowstone, but drops a complete block when mined instead of dust that must be crafted.
Ether: A liquid with the unique feature of being unaffected by gravity; can be found as floating spherical "pools", or floating rivers, and can be swum through with no or less danger of drowning. Can be collected in buckets, and when placed automatically expands into a "pool" with a set radius, but will flow around solid objects. Can be directed into rivers by being attracted to or repelled by certain blocks.
Ivory: durable, shiny white stone slightly weaker than Obsidian. May be able to attract Ether.
Okay, I love these ideas (perhaps replace the "Ivory" with marble, though). :biggrin.gif: But MOST of all, I love that Ether idea, with one small tweak: rather than have it pool in "spheres", perhaps have it just expand outwards horizontally or something? I'm not sure what to do with it exactly, but it seems like it'd be too hard to get the sourceblock for it if it's in a sphere. Perhaps it extends horizontally in the directions that are available from the sourceblock, and "connects" with itself if some of the flow is close enough, but otherwise will flow straight on, descending one block layer in the air every hundred blocks or so? This way, if there's just one block in the air, it'll form a small pool that lets you still get the sourceblock, but if it's from a spring it'll form a river in the air. :biggrin.gif:
Yeah, I guess that makes sense. Marble probably makes more sense , too, and I think it should be able to reflect light, in the sense that it lights the area a short distance around it when struck by light. I think I understand your physics for Ether, but I still think the flow/formation could be directed by the placement of certain materials to attract/repel it; so marble could draw it in, allowing you to make "bridges" by placing an Ether block between a gap lined with Marble, or make long "tunnels" by repelling it into the desired shape using Netherrack or something.

Aether Ether?
that sounds pretty funny tbh.
I suppose wind could move the liquid about.[/quote]
Something just hit me: since the Nether revamp added new gem types that can be crafted into weapons with unique properties, should the Aether have its own gem that makes a special kind of armor, or something? I have an idea what to call it, but I'm not sure what it would do...
Well, I managed to get myself banned for a week, but during that time I came up with a good idea.
The Aether is a realm set above the clouds, a realm of light to the Nether's dark. And from the beginning of this thread, people have asked the question "What if I fall off?". Now, in most cases people would say "You enter the top of the overworld and hope you land in water", but personnally I don't like that. For a start, it means that the Aether has to be directly corrolational to the overworld, and secondly, how would this only work one way? I suggest a different Idea. It's much simpler; from layer 16 down, the Aether is covered in cloud. This has multiple benefits, but the most obvious are that you don't see what's below the Aether, removing any kind of need to pretend that it is just above the overworld, and it also means that, when mining, you can tell that you're nearing the bottom of the map and are about to fall out of the bottom of your floating island and get yourself killed.
But this idea is twofold, because what was recently implemented? Weather. And lightning. And when you hit the cloud layer, you had better stop mining, because the lightning storm starts at level 10. By level 10, there is a 10% chance of being hit by lightning each second, with each bolt doing 5 hearts of damage. By layer 9, there's a 20% of being hit. Layer 8, 30%, and so on, until you've got a 100% at layer 1. And if you somehow do get through that, you just hit void, and voila, you die anyway.
I think that this would be an effective way of finally sorting out the Aether location issue.
Why not simply have a thick layer of clouds/mist...if the player falls, he keeps falling and dies after diving deep into the mist. there's no reason for the player to see land/ground.
I think this makes the most sense. If you can't dig up out of the Nether, it's only fair you can't fall out of the Aether.
Something just hit me: since the Nether revamp added new gem types that can be crafted into weapons with unique properties, should the Aether have its own gem that makes a special kind of armor, or something? I have an idea what to call it, but I'm not sure what it would do...
Ok, now I have some ideas.. the gem itself would be called Orichalcum, named after a legendary mineral said to be harder than Diamond. It would have the same resistance of Diamond armor and equipment, but it would be immune to the effects of Midas Tears and Nether corruption (it would be about the same as using a diamond item in the normal world) and may possibly resist the effects of lava (or at least the individual gems would be). However, it is extremely rare and requires a diamond tool (or maybe something made from Nether materials) to mine. Any suggestions? Balance issues? Improvements? Does the idea just plain suck?
So in essence something similar to the Light Gem (SunSteel) I proposed?
I wouldn't make it a diamond.
Diamonds would never make good swords really, and the Overworld and NewNether already have gem tools as the strongest. Hence why doing it differently and having some sort of metal would be better IMHO.
Oh, sorry; I didn't see your sunsteel thing. That aside, I think Orichalcum was actually a metal, anyway.

I agree with this. Though perhaps falling would have a small chance of shooting you back out, like pinball.

Hmm. I'm not necessarily adverse, but why and how?...
Maybe you could land on mobs, or pools of Ether (floating liquid I proposed), which would give you a chance of finding a way back up? They wouldn't be directly above the "floor limit", but they might be found below the usual set of islands to give you at least a chance of a safe landing.
I think it's interesting to use glowstone as a portal material, but it's just that not everyone likes to go to the Nether. I know you can set it to peaceful and what-not, but I think it could be made of something else. It has to be harder to obtain than obsidian, so why not golden blocks?

I kinda like the glowstone method better because it gives you a reason to go to the nether. Makes you work for it, you know?

That's different from "shooting you back out, like pinball" ;-P
I think I'll see how the whole 'Ether in the Aether' thing plays out before committing anything.
Well, it's pretty damn windy out there in the Aether, so coulden't there be updrafts?
Likewise, there could be a chance of a downdraft, which would make you fall faster i suppose.

Hmm. Just... Hmmm.
I'm still not convinced.
Well, it would make it safer in the way that falling would have less of a penalty, but more dangereus in the way that you could try to make a two block jump and get smacked with a downdraft.
Hmm. Just fading to white feels a bit silly to be honest. I still think it's easier to disconnect the two dimensions entirely.
The 2D render issue was just to allow the player a bit better sense of whether to expect to die if they fall, or if they have water underneath them, but even without the 2d render, they should still be teleported to the top of the overworld. with a 2:1 or 4:1 ratio, all if means is falling down into any of a 2x2 or 4x4 set of portal blocks will teleport you to being above the same block in the overworld.

If you're going to have specific blocks move it around, then you might as well just have one specific block that causes all liquid blocks that are touching it or within a certain distance (similar to how leaf blocks decide if they should wither or not) to no longer generate flow blocks. Then you could allow it to work with regular water or even lava or any other liquid that might be introduced in the future.

There's already the idea of Aetherrock being able to be crafted into camoflauge armor, and floatsand/hoverglass being used to make armor that extends the range of your ability to jump.

Just one more note Grey - you have a notion that every item/block has to be super-unique and have special abilties and 0 redundance. However, even normal Minecraft fails to abide by that standard
And a final challenge - you don't like SunStone and Light Gem (+ SunSteel). Fair enough. But how about giving ideas on how to improve upon it?
The Aether list of ideas didn't spring forth fully formed. It grew from disjointed and rough ideas. In other words, before discarding the idea as garbage, try to use your intellect and imagination to see if you can make it work.
Challenge... Unaccepted. I improve on ideas when there is at least some aspect of it that I consider viable on its own. If I were to "improve" the sunstone idea, it would involve tossing out pretty much every single detail except maybe the very most basic concept of an "Aether gem" that would in some way act as either a counterpoint to the New Nether's Blood Gem or Netherraze.

At that point, why bother with the mist at all, just leave it as the void that would kill the player anyway. With falling being the primary means of death in the Aether, there needs to at least be some way to mitigate the damage incurred by that. That's the whole reason for falling into the Overworld (by having the bottom of the Aether covered with a giant one way portal that teleports the player to the top of the overworld);
1) It allows the player to at least have a CHANCE of falling into water and surviving.
2) It allows the chance of their armor absorbing the damage from the fall and still having a VERY slight possibility of survival even if they don't hit water
3) Even if they die, they'll still drop their items in the overworld where they can be gathered back up by the player, provided they can figure out where they died and get back there in time. Killing the player via void would instantly and permanently lose all items they were carrying.

The name is horrible. I get so tired of people suggesting these goofy generi-tite, and uncreativ-ium names, at that rate, just cut to the chase and call it "Mythril" or "Unobtainium" and be done with it.
Also the "END TIER" stuff is passe too. Even the blood gem tools are only about even with diamond in terms of abilities, except for not taking extra durability when used as weapons, and in the overworld they're weaker.
As I've mentioned already, There's already the possibility of using Aetherrock and Flotsand/Hoverglass to make armor with special abilities. Leaving the Aether at just that could be particularly telling, as it would mean that Nether would have the "offensive" equipment (there isn't any blood or raze ARMOR) and the Aether would have all the "defensive" equipment.
I do like the idea that another type of Aether Armor might offer low physical defensive capabilities, but grant protection against things like lava, midas tears, acid, and heat in general, but that might be doable from something that already exists instead of needing to add a new material for it.
Sorry for double posting, but I just thought of something.
Even with rangecraft, there is one thing I think the Aether could really add to weaponry: A better bow.
There are so many different possibilities for this with the Aether materials; be it galestone bows that shoot the arrows farther, quicksoil enhanced ones that shoot the arrow harder and do more damage... It seems like almost every Aether material has a possible association.
Anyway, I just thought I'd pitch the idea.
There is no need for better bow. Ranged combat is already overpowered and need severe rebalancing (which Rangecraft has been attempting to do) If you want easier to make ranged weapons you go with sling, wide range utility goes to bow, REALLY heavy power goes to igniter bow, and the hard hitting and accurate stuff goes to crossbow. the focus is on Diversity rather than any general sweeping "this is better"
