So I was working on this really cool resource pack a while ago, but bad progress nonwithstanding, I think I found something much better... I'm probably gonna never release another custom Minecraft map.Until we meet again...
I really didn't want to read through 105 pages... so if this was already said, sorry. But that would be cool if you could ride those pigs. You could ride them ALL you want. But when you dove down below the "Aether" level, then they would turn to a cloud. A cloud, and you would fall through it ALL the way to the Overworld. Going through the portal would teleport you back but not the pig, who would just keep flying. And you should be able to make sunglasses (see below) so the day is not as blinding. This is a completely amazing thread, and so are the nether ideas. This should 200% be added to the game, without ANY changes. They are all amazing.
Basically, it lacks lightning because that would be directly damaging to the player.
So? Aether is "sky, clouds...heavenly" . Not non-damaging.
Methinks that completely avoiding any damaging mobs is stupid, as it's not really counter.
Since when is a mob throwing you off a cliff into oblivion somehow more human or less irritating that killing your outright?
Mainly because pretty much every Aether mob can float, fly, or otherwise prevent taking damage from falls. So it's not really their fault that falling a long distance kills you.
I know you want to go a counter-theme to Nether, but that should be the MAIN counter-theme. Not going "what do we have in the Nether? Oh, we have to have the opposite in the Aether"
As to what mob that would be...
It doesn't need to be a mob. Just have thunderstorms now that weather is added. (after all, I only said no directly damaging MOBS. The environment itself can still be hostile, within reason)
Even if you're completely above the cloud layer (which you aren't necessarily, since cold cloud is itself a cloud) Lightning doesn't always travel down, it just travels to the easiest point to travel to, so it can even go sideways or up, striking the player from below.
Of course, that also brings to the table the possibility of a mob that is metallic in some manner, and will just grab onto you when you get close, simply to ride along with you and doesn't deal any damage, BUT it does make you more likely to get hit by lightning.
That can be fixed.
F'course, in-game items can be as large as you want them to be. One COULD make a 30-foot long sword (but for what other than comedic purposes?)
The gsit is that this is a large and long sword. Pain in the assto put together, but much whoopass.
Yeah, and that's the main problem. There's already a whoopass sword; it's called Diamond or, since you're assuming the presence of Netherraze from the New Nether suggestion, Blood Sword.

This IS a suggestion thread. What Grey thinks Aether *should* be is of no importance to me. Why should I be constricted by his ideas? He's not Notch.
I could just as easily say the same thing about your ideas, you know. Assuming that you're looking at the idea of actually adding to this Aether suggestion, ultimately you do need to address the issues that I have, or I'm just not going to add it. Telling me that I'm not Notch isn't going to suddenly make me go "Oh, I was WRONG, I'll add EVERYBODY'S IDEAS to the opening post now! Angels and Flying Creepers and Dragons and Cockatrices, and Notch is god of Aether along with Zeus and Goliath and Golden trees will be everywhere!"
Greys vision of what Aether should be like is hardly the only possible or only good one.
So yes..I stand by my claim - no damaging mobs whatsoever is not a God-given fantastic idea. It's just a concept that not everyone shares.
And I stand by my claim. The point of the Aether should be to create a fresh experience and to feel DIFFERENT from the Overworld enough that it makes sense as its own realm. Non-damaging hostile mobs create an entirely different battle experience for the player compared to what they face on the Overworld. In reality, what would lighting shooting mobs bring to the table that skeletons shooting arrows don't already?
The same issue is what I have with the things connected to your sunstone idea. It's main feature is that it creates light, which has abotu a dozen blocks in the game that already do that, not even counting stuff like the potential additions of notch adding lanterns, or the new nether adding mushraves, ravelanterns, glowstone sand and Glowstone Lamps. Minecraft is freaking DROWNING in light sources, and you're putting this light source in a realm that already is widely lit, and has no mobs that are affected negatively by sunlight. It has no functional purpose until it is taken outside of the realm it is supposedly native to. Go take a look at the current crop of suggestions for the Aether and New Nether; all of the additions have functions that at least have some purpose within the realm they exist in, and if they have functions useful in other realms that's icing on the cake.
It's other purpose is to create a wand that shoot fire, which honestly, I find more LIMITING than useful. If you're going to do magic, there are other ideas that would have more than just fire as the option As far as magic goes, the sunstone is a one trick pony.
Then the blinding effect. Sure it makes sense, but I've already proposed that as an effect for Glowstone Arrows so it would be easier just to make that a property of glowstone. Then I could just make that sword of yours by smelting a Netherraze Sword with Glowstone dust. The other tools could be done the same way. Why add a new block at that rate?
Really when it comes down to it, you make a big deal over it, but most enemies go down in 2 shots of a diamond sword, and if you're using Netherraze in the recipe, you have to assume the Blood Sword exists too, which can do up to 12 damage in the Nether and 10 damage in the Overworld.
Ultimately it falls back onto my original issue with the idea being self sustainable. The most functional purposes you give it can't be accessed without other material from a completely different realm.
The rest of my problem is just little stuff like "It is immune to Nether corruption" which only makes me realize that you skimmed through the Opening post of new nether at best. Corruption ONLY affects Stone and Cobblestone when adjacent to Netherrack IN the Nether, and Sand and Dirt when adjacent to Soul Sand IN the Nether. Outside of the nether, Mossy cobblestone can corrupt Netherrack, and Grass can corrupt Soul Sand. Why would you even need to mention that this sunstone thing wouldn't get corrupted?

Okay, I'm just going to skip the fact that "Aether" actually means some kind of really complicated thing to do with energy and gravity, and get straight to the bad parts.
Seeing as how you are having trouble wrapping your head around the concept that a single word can be used for more than one single definition, you're not off to a great start on your attempt to criticize.
Ae·ther
n. Greek Mythology
The poetic personification of the clear upper air breathed by the Olympians.
First, consider that for it to not be like the nether, it CANNOT be very easy to die. That's a violation of obvious rules. Yet, you still have massively precarious edges on the sides of floating mountains.
VR: (Violation rating)
False. Difficulty is not a concept that needs to be opposed.
Quote from Opening Post »
The main thing to understand is that, yes, The Aether is a "Heavenly" wide open dimension of Light, Air, and Water that exists above the Overworld, and functions as an opposite of the Nether that is a "Hellish" enclosed dimension of Darkness, Rock, and Fire that exists below the Overworld. BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN IT IS SAFE
The Aether can still be dangerous provided it is dangerous in an opposite manner. Where the Nether only has mobs that can directly damage the player, the Aether has NO mobs that can directly damage the player, but can only hurt the player by making them fall or drown, etc.
Second, that horrible idea of a GLOWSTONE PORTAL. That is way too delicate. The whole point of obsidian portals is that it's really hard to lose any part of it. Glowstone will break in a split second.
False. The Aether portal takes you to a place that is more pleasant than the Nether, of course it should be easier to lose. And it will only break in a split second if you let it get damaged, since there aren't any directly damaging mobs in the Aether, all you need to do is protect the portal in the overworld. Of course, since there's the big one way portal at the bottom of the Aether, even if the Aether portal did break you could still get back to the Overworld.
Also, that staging process is just straight up stupid. You should NOT have to go to hell before you go to heaven. That doesn't even make any sense - they'd scorn you there!
VR:
... was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven...
Jesus took that route and received no scorn from Heaven at all. In fact, it was the OPPOSITE of scorn. (c wut i did thar?)
Third, obsidian does NOT look yellow when the colors are reversed! You're probably still in the messed up state where you don't realize that the primary colors of light are red, blue and green. Just like each PIXEL PART in a PC. I inverted a block in paint. I goes white. A little bit green. Not yellow.
VR:
Now you're obviously just trolling, but I'll still address your points as if you're serious just to spite you:
Glowstone is about opposite FEATURES, not appearance. I can always use a texture pack that changes the color of obsidian to blue, and glowstone to orange, so they'll look perfectly opposite at that point. Since the appearance of a block is not absolute, the only way to accurately attest opposites is through opposite FEATURES. Namely:
Obsidian = Gives off no light, Glowstone = Gives off maximum light
Obsidian = Hard to break, Glowstone = Easy to Break
Obsidian = Needs best pickaxe to mine, Glowstone = needs no pickaxe to mine
Obsidian = Easy to place gathered material again, Glowstone = Gathered material can't be placed directly, but must be crafted and possibly smelted to get a placeable block back.
Glowstone is the most opposite featured block to obsidian that is in minecraft.
Fourth: Oxygen rate? Seriously? You sure as hell don't lose air from carting too fast.
VR:
True, but reading comprehension failure on your part:
Quote from Opening Post »
Minecarts will also have their acceleration increased while traveling on tracks built over quicksoil, but do not cause the player to lose oxygen while riding them.
That's what I think, damn you.
"think" may be too strong of a term for this situation :tongue.gif:

the player already falls into the Overworld, and the PIgasus wouldn't be teleported with teh player and would probably just keep flying around in the Aether. Why would the pigasus need to turn into a cloud? Also the pigasus still flies wherever it wants to. It balances out the fact that it can fly anywhere and unrestricted. Moas can be controlled, but can only float.

Your glasses are way too expensive and in no way indicate that they are SUNglasses that would actually help with toning light down. More likely Gloomwood would be crafted with a pumpkin into a Gloomlantern, but still can be worn on the player's head to block light.

Clouds-huge floating islands made of wool

I just have a question, will there be weather in the Aether/New Nether?
Though i suppose that just becuase one or 2 realms has something doesn't mean the third realms needs it. The yare all thier own uniqe realm after all.
Well, as I just mentioned, it makes sense to have some sort of thunder/lightning weather, but not necessarily rain or snow itself. The weather could consist of the occasional wind gust that could come from the sides.
Lumastone: Similar to Glowstone, but drops a complete block when mined instead of dust that must be crafted.
Ether: A liquid with the unique feature of being unaffected by gravity; can be found as floating spherical "pools", or floating rivers, and can be swum through with no or less danger of drowning. Can be collected in buckets, and when placed automatically expands into a "pool" with a set radius, but will flow around solid objects. Can be directed into rivers by being attracted to or repelled by certain blocks.
Ivory: durable, shiny white stone slightly weaker than Obsidian. May be able to attract Ether.

Ivory: durable, shiny white stone slightly weaker than Obsidian. May be able to attract Ether.
EDIT: Lumastone burns hostile mobs (not native to Aether) on contact.
Sure, it does. It changes whether these mobs are actually out to see you dead, or if they're just trying to get you out of their territory, or possibly just playing rough, which puts an entirely different spin on the sense of hostility and the mood of the Aether as a whole.
To you the "non direct damage mobs" is a golden rule. To me it's just a interesting concept.
I don't see why mobs should be prohibited from doing direct damage in any logical fashion.
To me, it's a rule that has BECOME golden by demonstrating itself to be an excellent motivator for creative thinking, rather than "this mob attacks you... with arrows! and this mob attacks you... with fire! and this mob attacks you... with lightning!"
and I've already explained the reasoning up above, and numerous times throughout the thread.
There's also already a hoe..and and axe present. In both Nether and "normal world". Does that mean that a hoe out of Aether materials is redundant?
If you're coming up with a new material, and even requires a different material to supply half of its features, yeah, it is redundant.
To put it simply - just because you are the tread started, doesn't make you opinion any more valid or important (to me anyway) than that of any other forumite here. I do respect it tough, as in a forum this large with so many suggestion SOME kind of filter must be there.
Fair enough, but if you are going to post in this thread, you are also essentially giving me free reign to critique the ideas you come up with. If you want totally free reign, you'll need to start posting in your own thread.
And is that the only way to create difference?
And why should that difference be even that important? The experience is already different by the different dimension and looks. And why are there no direct damage mobs in the Aether? Is everyone in the Aether so nice that they don't care about defending themselves? Even biblical angels, which should be the kindest beings imaginable, can raze continents...
Obviously they care about defending themselves, or you wouldn't have Zephyrs, but just take a look at the overworld. Friendly mobs don't even run when you attack them, floating islands are all well and good, but so what? I can stick a bunch of dirt and grass and trees in the air. so it looks a little different, big deal, I can get a texture pack that changes how things look. How it LOOKS doesn't change how it FEELS. That doesn't establish a difference. But the way you interact with mobs THOSE establish a difference.
And note that I said mobs that can directly damage - not mobs that are hostile and will chase after players.
Think wolf, not zombie. Or a guardian of some kind. Won't touch the player unless the player does something to provoke them.
Yeah, but once you do provoke it, it still ultimately ends up being the same as fighting a wolf or zombie pigman. I've already shown you how a mob could be non-hostile and still provide electrical damage to the player without actually attacking. To me, that sounds like a MUCH more unique experience than what you've been going for.
Light and a whole score of other special effects.
What is the purpose of crystals? reflecting light.. Well GEE, how original!!!! It is SOOO different than what I wrote!
yes, very. Redirecting and intensifying light that already exists is VERY different than simply generating it constantly.
And yes - having it's full potential fulfilled outside it's native realm IS something different compared to other materials. It's funny that you see this as a negative. The Aether is only a small part of minecraft.
So is the Overworld, but I don't see any "only does anything in the Aether/Nether" materials there, and so is the Nether, but I don't see any "only does anything in Overworld/Aether" materials there either.
"why add a new block/item" can be applied to 90% of the blocks/items in both the Nether and Aether thread. You could always just give more properties to existing blocks/items.
Oh really? Do tell. Explain to me what blocks should cause darkness and cold surrounding them instead of gloomwood. Or what block should be insubstantial and mimic the appearance of whatever block it's placed next to like Aetherrock. Oooh, I know, which block should generate wind the way Galestone and Flowvein do? Maybe leaf blocks should generate wind? or sand? What block should burn forever and never go out?
That arrow is a idea from Rangecraft and was not in this thread. You're now fishing for ideas from other threads to tell me my ideas are silly? Heck, I can bring down anything you ever proposed that way.
And yes..you could do things in a different way. Just like every one of your ideas could ALSO be realized in a different way.
I'm not talking about just a "different" way. I'm talking about a way that uses existing material instead of adding unnecessary blocks. Having Glowstone items or glowstone supplemented items blind enemies is something that could easily be added without breaking its current functions at all. If you think you can find that many ideas that use existing blocks to achieve these results more efficiently, while still remaining balanced in power, please let me know.
Tools loose durabiltiy TWICE AS FAST in the Nether.
Who's skimming now?
You. It's called Nether BLIGHT. Since you used the term "corruption" when talking about the block itself, and not the tools, and you were using a term that referred to the Nether's effect on specific blocks, you were either skimming, or confused.
Quote from Tactful »
As for mobs and materials, clearly there are too many here without enough functionality. You should get it down to a core three or four new materials, and a core two or three new hostile mobs. The aether should be the realm in which you discover flying mounts.
I think people should stop thinking of the aether in terms of thematics, and start considering functionality over aesthetic pleasability.
LOL. The Blocks and Mobs suggested are nothing BUT functional.
I like just about everything on this thread, but the only thing that i dont like is that with swets, you cant hurt them at all without tnt, fire or gold weapons, which means that you are sort of screwed if you dont have any of those. i think that maybe they have alot of health, 20 or so, and using anything other than gold weapons will only do 1/2 or 1 heart of damage, wheras gold weapons, tnt, or fire will do much more like 2 1/2, or 4, or something like that, so then even if you dont have anything on you, you can still at least get rid of them after a while. I love everything else on this thread though. :smile.gif:
Congratulations, You've just about screwed up my life with this thread. Every night I lay in bed, my eyes are wide open hoping that one day the Aether would be implemented, I dream of it, I can only focus on it at school, I think of how much more excitement would be added to Minecraft if the Aether was made. Hell, I'm just a little bit short of tryng to BUILD a God-damned Aether in Minecraft. The last week of my life has been controlled by this thread, and I hate it to the ends of hell, but you still have my support, I just hope Notch smartens up and implements this soon...

Okay, I love these ideas (perhaps replace the "Ivory" with marble, though). :biggrin.gif: But MOST of all, I love that Ether idea, with one small tweak: rather than have it pool in "spheres", perhaps have it just expand outwards horizontally or something? I'm not sure what to do with it exactly, but it seems like it'd be too hard to get the sourceblock for it if it's in a sphere. Perhaps it extends horizontally in the directions that are available from the sourceblock, and "connects" with itself if some of the flow is close enough, but otherwise will flow straight on, descending one block layer in the air every hundred blocks or so? This way, if there's just one block in the air, it'll form a small pool that lets you still get the sourceblock, but if it's from a spring it'll form a river in the air. :biggrin.gif:

Yeah, I've said before that I'm not a fan of gold weapons or armor being required so much. It feels somewhat like "just to make it useful", in which case you could just as easily argue for mossy cobblestone swords, because the moss would absorb some of the moisture or something. The booster tracks added in 1.5 also make the "gold isn't useful" arguments moot, as well.

The Aether is a realm set above the clouds, a realm of light to the Nether's dark. And from the beginning of this thread, people have asked the question "What if I fall off?". Now, in most cases people would say "You enter the top of the overworld and hope you land in water", but personnally I don't like that. For a start, it means that the Aether has to be directly corrolational to the overworld
False. One way Aether portal covers the bottom of the Aether and is responsible for teleporting you to the top of the overworld. No Physical connection is needed.
Excuse me while I go place its release date on..the... Wait a minute...
But in all seriousness, twenty three pages into this thread before deciding to post probably wasn't a smooth move on my part, but this idea is the smoothest thing I've ever seen.

EDIT: Lumastone burns hostile mobs (not native to Aether) on contact.
If you're coming up with a new material, and even requires a different material to supply half of its features, yeah, it is redundant.
Fair enough, but if you are going to post in this thread, you are also essentially giving me free reign to critique the ideas you come up with. If you want totally free reign, you'll need to start posting in your own thread.
Yeah, but once you do provoke it, it still ultimately ends up being the same as fighting a wolf or zombie pigman. I've already shown you how a mob could be non-hostile and still provide electrical damage to the player without actually attacking. To me, that sounds like a MUCH more unique experience than what you've been going for.
yes, very. Redirecting and intensifying light that already exists is VERY different than simply generating it constantly.
So is the Overworld, but I don't see any "only does anything in the Aether/Nether" materials there, and so is the Nether, but I don't see any "only does anything in Overworld/Aether" materials there either.
Oh really?
I'm not talking about just a "different" way. I'm talking about a way that uses existing material instead of adding unnecessary blocks. Having Glowstone items or glowstone supplemented items blind enemies is something that could easily be added without breaking its current functions at all. If you think you can find that many ideas that use existing blocks to achieve these results more efficiently, while still remaining balanced in power, please let me know.
You. It's called Nether BLIGHT. Since you used the term "corruption" when talking about the block itself, and not the tools, and you were using a term that referred to the Nether's effect on specific blocks, you were either skimming, or confused.
LOL. The Blocks and Mobs suggested are nothing BUT functional.

Oooh, maybe they could be damaged by buckets? :tongue.gif: :biggrin.gif:
But honestly, if there was going to be a new "Nether" or world i hope
False. One way Aether portal covers the bottom of the Aether and is responsible for teleporting you to the top of the overworld. No Physical connection is needed.

But in all seriousness, twenty three pages into this thread before deciding to post probably wasn't a smooth move on my part, but this idea is the smoothest thing I've ever seen.
Why is this not ingame already?
