The Aether Mod Thread put to many stupid ores in the Aether. I like how this and "The New Nether" balance the tools and ores so that things aren't ridiculous.
If I could suggest something, after reading the Nether Update thread you linked to, I think that Midas Tears, not water, should be placed to activate the Portal.

Wrong. It's meant for me to look like a pimp.

Midas Tears is corrosive, and damaging.
The best counter to "Hot burning fire" is "cold soothing water" in every case.
It does reinforce the whole "Have to go to the Nether before the Aether though.
I'm still not getting this whole "have to go to the nether before the aether" nonsense. The game is only linear in your acquiring resources and tools, other than that its non-linear and based heavily on choice. when someone wants to go to the nether they'll go there, I highly doubt adding the aether would cause the nether to fall into disuse.
It's no different than Tiers for Tools. You have to start with Wood tools to gather stone to make stone tools, and until you get stone tools, you can't get iron, and without iron, you can't get diamond.
Same thing here, you have to start with Overworld where you can't get to the Nether until you gather obsidian, (which requires you to climb the tool tiers, at least until iron for a bucket to move lava and water with) and until you can't get to the Aether until you gather Glowstone.
This idea delves deeply into how the Aether should be constructed and how it should affect the future of Minecraft.
I had a thought. What if Notch integrated the Nether world into the Overworld in small amounts? The same could be done with the Aether. There could be pockets of both worlds, hidden away in massive mountain biomes. It would make the realms a little more plausible. These biomes would be extremely rare and only found in large mountains so you would be extremely lucky to find one.
I had a second thought. What if the Nether and the Aether are neighboring planets or something? The portals are the connections between the different planets in the Minecraft Solar System. Under this idea Notch could reasonably include lots of different types of worlds. This would be a great way of adding lore and maybe NPCs in standard Survival.
If Notch decided to add remnants of Minecraft's past into the game. Maybe random ruins here and there with pieces of destroyed portals in some of them. This would add a lot of intrigue and just add to the game's creativity and whimsy. It would also be the clue players would need to make a portal without using the Wiki. >.>
Maybe only the rarest of blocks in the game would amount to portals. Obsidian, Glowstone, more rare blocks Notch could add would amount to different portals. The portals could be the reason why the planet is no longer inhabited by intelligent life. Maybe the portals were an experiment... or an escape from a natural disaster that happened a very long time ago and the environment has covered up its past. The Void could be a very real part of the game if Notch wanted to really make the game interesting. Think of the void as being the thing that caused the destruction of the civilization before you an only a scarse few things of that civilization remained.
If Notch streamlined the World creating process, he could more easily create separate worlds with different terrain and features. Notch should hire some extra help to create a game engine for Minecraft based off of Java. Then he could work on making Minecraft 10 times better than just manually writing javacode and testing to see if it achieves the desired effect.
Most of the things involved in generating the world can be interchanged. Block deposits can and should be setup so that they can be easily swapped for any other block. The biome making process should be streamlined, especially if he wants to attempt an Aether like world. It's not that easy to just generate tons of floating objects. It just happens randomly due to chunk errors in the normal world.
Notch should include a World folder for different realms. The Nether and the Aether is only the beginning. The full scope of the game includes a fully reasonable backstory, a more involved purpose to playing, and a lot more building possibilities. Minecraft's full release doesn't need to include more than the Nether and the Aether as long as Notch actively tries to fix the flaws that have limited the game thus far and structures the game for expansion.
This means adding mod support, fixing how worlds are loaded so SMP can finally have a working World system, and adding more Admin commands so that people may create custom worlds based on the World generating code. (This should be a separate thread in itself!) If Notch manages to create a working GUI interface for Minecraft, expanding the game's scope for Minecraft 2 would be a lot easier and we get a better experience out of it.
Notch should go big or go home with Minecraft. Portals shouldn't be another gimmick like fishing. I think that portals should have a reason to exist more than heading to a new unique world. It just doesn't make any sense. This is not the NES era anymore. Gamers demand reasons behind things that don't make physical sense. Notch has no reason apart from complete laziness to add things that wouldn't logically function in a certain way. He removed sponges for a reason. Portals are the same concept as sponges. They don't function in a logical way. Portals function in a metaphorical way and even Notch is trying to back himself away from that standpoint.
Notch should explain why Portals are there, why the Nether exists, and the Aether if he includes it. I think we deserve that much. This isn't a flash game and shouldn't be treated as such. Minecraft is a fully functional game that should have a backstory. The Nether should have a backstory. The Aether should have a backstory. all these backstories should make sense and integrate with clues hidden in the Overworld.
My last point is that if there is going to be a Nether and an Aether and they are logically planets and not illogical or metaphorical realms, then Notch should add many different examples of planets. Some could even have text that would need to be translated before it can be interpreted or even NPC interaction. Give us anything that would tie all the worlds/realms together in a puzzle that doesn't look like the pieces were never intended to fit together in the first place.
An amazing idea, a great update that would surely be little less than totally mind blowing. I love the idea, and the possibilities it brings to the world of minecraft. I can only hope that Notch will implement other (maybe not Nether or Aether like) ideas that are of similar caliber to this, though such ideas are hard to come by.
If I could suggest something, after reading the Nether Update thread you linked to, I think that Midas Tears, not water, should be placed to activate the Portal.

I thought that Midas Tears would make sense because they turn everything into gold, and the portal is gold.
What I have realized, though, is that this would allow you to build an Aether portal in the Nether.

Wrong. It's meant for me to look like a pimp.
I am sure it has been asked and answered but i am not reading 99 pages to search for it when i can just type this out. Is there and ETA on the mod i would love to test it if not.
Just to clarify, because I know people get easily confused on the concept of having a neutral stance, I'm also not officially AGAINST the Aether Mod either.
Kingdogz (who is one of the modders) keeps in touch with me occasionally and I've given my take on how I think various aspects should be handled. Some of my ideas have been incorporated, some are still being considered. Kingdogz has also explained the basic concepts behind the various additions they've made, and while I'm not totally sold on how well the ideas will work in execution, I do believe they're at least aiming for a good target.
The Mobs that I've seen from them have all been looking incredibly good, and some tweaking will likely be needed, but that's what Beta Testers are for.
So basicaly, I'm waiting for more concrete information before I offer any type of official stance and start linking to the Mod thread from here, or start mirroring information on the things that they've added.
Grey you better check that post. I decided to dedicate it to the Aether rather than making it another thread. Would a more streamlined World generating process be required to make the Aether? The lack of creativity of the Nether probably means Notch was rushing the project or it was taking too long to get it to the desired result. Also I thought that if there is 2 realms that can be explained, than why not make more if it becomes easier to do so? If each contained remnants of Minecraft lore I think it would be more worth it.
It's not extremely necessary to add lots of new worlds. But some explanation would be appreciative.
Personally, I think that there is a limit to the number of worlds you can add to minecraft. Nether, Aether, and Moon/OrbitingMobSpawner/(AKA: Goofy Gravity World) pretty much hit the limits of the places that actually feel separate from minecraft.
When I see other realm suggestions, I see things like "Upside down world" that doesn't really add anything, or "trippy colors world" again, not really adding anything, or Ice world, or Ocean world, or Forest world, all of which would make more sense as superbiomes that are actually located within Minecraft itself.
As for backstory, no. I LIKE the fact that there isn't a backstory, that I can claim whatever I want as being valid. I could claim I crashed on the island from a plane, or maybe even a ship and civilization is just over the next horizon, or I could claim that I came from space or teleported via warp means, or maybe even a portal of similar nature to the Nether, or that I spawned fully formed from nothing, akin to a god of the realm.
Heck, I specifically crafted the Aether (even if the mod doesn't follow that philosophy) to allow for interpretations of it being connected to the Overworld physically, or completely separate dimensions. The open interpretation is half of what gives minecraft the creative support that makes it so enjoyable.
But what if there was more left behind? Ruins with shards of portals, pockets of Nether/Aether biomes in the overworld, some form of story of a long past civilization?
I didn't mean an explanation why you exist persay. But I want an explanation why certain things exist in the overworld. I want to know why the Nether isn't an interpretation of hell when there exists soulsand. I want to know the history behind spawners.I want some form of goal in normal survival mode other than just surviving. I want objectives that include the Aether and the Nether.
One idea in particular. i want portals to function as a teleport from place to place as well as an accesspoint between realms. This would make Aether travel a lot easier.

I feel like you're missing a lot of the point to both the Aether and Minecraft in general. I specifically DON'T want "answers" to those things. Soulsand is Soulsand. It might just be a name given to it based on appearance, and the fact that it exerts a "pull" on anything it touches. It might have no real relation to actual souls.
As for portals that move you to different point within a realm, instead of only between different realms, you might be interested in the take I have for the "moon":
Quote from GreyAcumen »
For those who are against the Moon as a realm, then just imagine this setup:
- The Moon is a Giant Enemy Mob Spawner, and not really a moon. This explains;
~ Why the splash screen says; "That's no moon!"
~ Why enemies spawn during the night.
~ Why the moon has no phases.
- The Moon is accessed by having a 2x2 square of water on the ground bordered by 8-12 blocks that are on fire while the Moon is overhead. (this prevents access from the Nether and Aether)
- While on the Moon;
~ It is always Night. (stars overhead, but no moon)
~ The player is on the FAR side of the moon, and as such will never actually see the Overworld.
~ neither fire/lava/torches work, nor water (is always placed as ice, when ice is broken on moon, drops ice block
~ Gravity is reduced, so the player can jump higher and fall slower(and further without getting hurt)
~ With reduced gravity, the player also takes longer(not instantaneous) to get up to full speed, change direction, or come to a full stop.
~ Sand, Glowstone, Mossy Cobblestone and White Stone(marble?) are the standard block.
~ Special "Moon" blocks all affect gravity in some way(Increase/decrease/reverse/re-orient gravity while walking on)
~ Enemy Mob Spawner blocks are also common, and can be mined if they are on top of a White Stone. Mob Spawners will burn if exposed to natural sunlight.
~ Teleporter Pads are also frequently located near Mob Spawners, and any mob/player that stands on it will be teleported to a random Mob Spawner (generally in the overworld, frequently in a dungeon) Teleporter pads can be crafted with a mob spawner to make the teleporter always send mobs/players to that specific mob spawner. Teleporter pads are the player's only route back to the overworld.
That's one of the most unique explanations for the moon I've ever read. Kudos to you for that, but alot of that idea made even less sense than Minecraft portals. Why would you warp to the moon and further more why would telepads exist on the moon?
This only raises further questions.
Oh and to be honest I don't want those things to be completely answered. I just want everything to make sense. I want more intrigue and I want Notch to make me work for the intrigue. I don't want Notch to try to pull the "you're the first inhabitant in this land" plot. It just isn't true and there should be more evidence to be discovered like runes or slabs or artifacts that would hint towards the more logical answer.
Itis things like that that would not explain the history, but give us a little more than random things that just barely make sense with anything. I would like to build with blocks that look like they have ancient writing on them. That would be so much cooler than moss stone. We should be able to build our own realistic ruins, but the building options are so limited.
