What if it's a semi-solid cloud base that is dense enough to support water? Something that is functionally how this looks- http://static.desktopnexus.com/thumbnai ... mbnail.jpg I mean, you already have the breakaway cloud blocks; Why not have them support water and not break from water's contact? Then you have a massive field of cloud cover beneath the AEther, hiding it from view from below (provides additional reasoning for why the game doesn't have to try and render AEther while in Overworld) while catching the water overflowing from the waterfalls to the land below. When the clouds get saturated enough, they tear open and let loose a heavy rain on the world below. (story component, until rain is implemented).
Just a thought. Still don't like the AEther in general, though. Seems too... kitsch.

Clouds as the Æther floor has already been suggested, and the idea was abandoned for a portal that makes building on the "floor" impossible. I liked the idea, too, until I thought about the "supporting other blocks" thing. I agree that looking down from Æther should not render the Overworld as you're not so much in the sky as in a seperate sky realm. Like the idea of Overworld rain, though (and wind too). The only real problem with this is the ease of building on the base level, which makes the whole "floating islands" thing pointless.

But since the clouds break if you have them in contact with the player, you couldn't build with them, ne? if you can't place any block on them, you can't build down there, unless you built down from the islands and then made a floor as a layer all the way down there- which you can still do anyways. But if it was a cloud that captured the falling waterfalls, you can at least swim back up the waterfalls and get onto an island, without any interaction with the Overworld at all, which continues the same concept of world segregation that was started with the Nether, if you wanted to take it that far.

first, my jaw is now a container for my own urine (for those who didnt get it: my jaw dropped down and i peed my pants).
THIS. IS. BI WINNING!
second, i have an idea for a new liquid: liquid nitrogen!
it will only be found in small pools at the top of the highest floating islands, because if it flows down it will have to end up on earth.
LN (Liquid nitrogen) is faster than water, and you can never drown in it.
instead, your bottom half of your body will be encased with ice (not blocks) and you will bobble up and down.
if you touch something you thaw and will be able to move for 1-3 seconds until you freeze again, taking away half a heart and if youre on peaceful you cant regenerate.
if you freeze while moving and the water is still, you move with your momentum.
if it comes into contact with water or lava in the aether, the water will turn to ice and the lava to obsidian and a few seconds later the LN will evaporate.
LN is transported in the real world in vacuum flasks, which are made out of metal (iron) glass and other stuff, so im thinking about something like this: []
[] []
if you put LN on earth it will evaporate after a few seconds, unless the source block is put on ice (i.e. the LN flow comes from there)
the LN flow will stop in a radius of a block or two before encoutering fire and torches and maybe also jack o lanterns and glowstones.
LN cannot be placed in the nether.
what do you think?
can you add anything to LN?
anything you would like to change because its overpowerful/cheap/bad?
let me know!
oh, and do you think i contridicted myself when i said that when LN touches lava it turns it to obsidian but LN stops a block or two before anything else which emits heat and light?
and should boats be able to sail on LN, or will LN evaporate?
not even one replay?
i mean, it took me at least 10 minutes to think of the idea, write it, read it, rewrite it because of typos, reread it, rerewrite it because of typos and post it!
Anyway, I love this idea, and I'll be getting it as soon as it comes out. But I also saw a suggestion in the Requests section that I think can be implemented with this nicely.
It occurred to me that it wouldn't be all too hard to implement something that sent you to a random (or not so random?) spot in the Aether/Nether for about a minute or so when you went to sleep.
Then again, it's just an idea.
This thing looks awesome btw, guys. Really looking forward to this. Here, has a .

You can still drop sand/ gravel pillars until you reach the bottom. The portal would not support blocks; they would just fall right through. It wouldn't even have to be a big glowing portal, either. It could be blue, or with clouds, or whatever. This does facilitate Æther floor building, while the portal would virtually eliminate this loophole. Unless the clouds do not support blocks, but then, I guess, the floor would. The portal would either kill you or you give you a nasty "fall from heaven/grace," a la Mt. Olympus in the Greek myths, (and probably more) which fits with the Greek theme of some of this suggestion.

Er, how could you drop a gravel/sand pillar down to the cloud, if it'd just break the cloud and fall through? When I read everything about the AEther, what came to mind is something far more similar to Sky Islands like the floating waterfall-pouring-to-the-ocean Final Fantasy sky palace, or the Actraiser Sky Palace, rather than anything like Mount Olympus, really.

I find it ironic that this thread actually has more views than the "Read before posting" thread.
no, irony would be if there were more people creating new threads suggesting the Aether instead of posting in this thread than there were views on the "Read before posting" thread. What you noticed falls more along the lines of... Sheer Awesomeness, really.
But the read before posting thread is on every single forum at the very top, whereas this thread is only on the suggestions forum, and isn't always at the top of the page anyway. The first thing one SHOULD do when visiting this forum is look at the rules. Not look at the Aether.
That said, more than 1/3 of the people in the Minecraft forums looked at this. That is sheer awesomeness. :biggrin.gif:

i don't know if this has been suggested already, but maybe to avoid the bloom of the day you could put a pumpkin on your head?
Er, how could you drop a gravel/sand pillar down to the cloud... -snip-
Your argument made me think of something.
WHAT HAPPENS IF SAND AND GRAVEL FALL FROM THE AETHER?
Do they just... disappear? Or do they fall into the Overworld? And in that case, what if a sand/gravel formation naturally occurs in the Aether and falls down when the player spawns? Then, why are there sand and gravel pillars falling from the sky?

I rather like that idea, though I actually proposed something similar to the reverse effect when used in the Overworld, where it doesn't brighten light, but it does make light that exists travel father, which ties into how Jackolanterns are brighter than just a torch by itself.

My plan was just that they would break, like hitting a torch or pressure plate, when they touched the portal blocks on the bottom of the aether that transport the player to the overworld.

Hey GreyAcumen, could you include my ornithopter idea as a way to travel in the Aether? I think that it would be great. It also includes gliders.
I thought I had already told you that I didn't really feel it necessary. Between Airships, Flying pigs, Moas and possible methods for Parachutes and Gliders combined with Galestone and Flowvein there isn't really any call at all for a more technologically advanced method of flight, which last I recall required using the crafting table to make a large number of items that had no use other than being in turn crafted together to make the ornithopter.
I sure hope Notch cathces wind of this. Sometimes I get the feeling that he doesn't even bother skimming the Suggestions on these forums. Some developer asks for Wolves and bingo, he gets wolves, but the countless supporters of this idea seem to be getting shafted. We love Minecraft enough to buy it and support it still further, shouldn't we have a voice Notch?
Yeah, but that was after the Aether was already proposed over at Getsatisfaction, not just from these forums. Ultimately these forums aren't the best for getting Notch's attention, but they are good for getting constructive feedback, updating an idea to improve and flesh it out, and to build support for when you do move the idea over to Get Satisfaction.

It'd be the same as the concept that Grey mentioned, where they'd just break into resources, and disappear. If you want to build down that badly, make a staircase and build off that. (Which you could do anyways, just like you do in reverse in the overworld)

This makes sense since clouds are not solid anyway (it sounds like cold clouds are, hence the confusion). + for this or portal or whatever gets the job done.

Just asking. I think it would be a great idea for aether transport. Just google search for Minecraft Ornithopter.
