Sorry if this has been suggested I havn't read a lot of the posts.
Obviously a lot of people don't think you should be able to fall into the overworld. So what if the bottom of the Aether was not sky or one big portal, but an endless and islandless sea? The picture(s) in the main post show many of the islands with waterfalls anyway, so (to me anyway) that would make more sense. If we can fall back to the overworld, wouldn't the waterfalls on the floating islands also reach the overworld (although that could become the cause of rain should it ever be implimented)
Great idea by the way, I certainly hope this gets added... especially those sheepuffs... the sound hilarious.
edit: Unfortunately an endless sea changes falling off the floating islands from instant death to extreme inconvineance. You would live... and then have to find a waterfall and swim up the very long stream of water and hope you can get back onto the islands at the top. Perhaps even though it is a sea, there needs to be someway that it causes your death. Maybe it isn't made of water, instead some other block that looks exactly like water but doesn't save you from fall damage made specifically for this purpose.
ah that may be the way to go, as there would be plenty of ice in the Aether anyway. I wonder if it would look as nice, but it would certainly be easier.
But then the aether wouldn't be up in the air, and you culd always drop sand to build towers up out of the ice or sea. I've already pointed out that the portals solve the issues, and don't bring any new problems into the picture. Blocks break and liquids stop when hitting the portal layer, and the player gets teleported.
I was thinking about the whole "anti-Nether" thing, and Shadow's post gave me an idea.
I like the idea of a sky-world, but if you want to call it the anti-Nether realm it should be made
of ice, right?
Anyway, you should have golems! :biggrin.gif:
Bits of stone held together by ghostly blue energy that form a humanoid figure of
some sort.
-lots of health
-slow move and attack speed
-melee range
-maybe a special ability? like an earthquake area attack or health regen or shields or something
They could guard sky castles or something :tongue.gif:
Also on the ice-world idea, maybe you could create a portal using Flowvein
or Floatsand as a base and then putting Cold Cloud water in the middle to
activate it, like setting it on fire for a nether portal.
But still, a for you sir!

I think Grey just hates putting new things into the game unless they can be completely and fully justified for at least 3 uses, not including looking cool.
the entire nether isn't made of lava, but the entire nether is completely underground (perhaps not under the overworld, but it distinctly has a ceiling) saying that the opposite of the Nether would be an ice world would be like saying the opposite of the Sorrow is sunglasses.

That's fine, I was just putting in food for thought more than anything else. The portal, now that I understand it better, makes a whole lot of sense. As long as Æther isn't too easy to get to from overworld, but you summed that up very well, as long as Notch heeds it.
While interesting, I think that some of the materials and especially some of the mobs are a bit too much. Overall, a neat idea, but... needs to be pared down and split into constituent ideas more, and each idea separately gone over.

<Pluecherry777>: I still think its funny that in 5 months, a group of modders made a mod thats actually better than a game thats been around for 2 years...

I don't understand your "Sorrow" reference, but I see what you mean. I guess you're right,
but I would still like to see a kind of cold/ice/snow element in the aether. Seas of icebergs/glaciers,
frozen mountains, etc. You can't just ignore the fact that the Nether has lava pools and this doesn't have
the opposite equivalent. Whatever. I like the idea of an anti-nether world but it doesn't seem right to call it
that without it being cold there. Have you ever hiked on a mountain? It's windy, and you've replicated
that effect with the Zephyr and various wind blocks, but it's also incredibly cold. Especially during the winter.
If the Aether was made big enough, you could even put different biomes in, like an ocean biome, a mountain biome,
a dungeon biome, etc.
Or maybe I should just start my own thread at this point. -.-

It has to do with the idea that you're taking a small part of an entire concept and then only taking the opposite of that small part instead of the opposite of the concept. Like if a small part of "sorrow" is being seen with tears in their eyes and not going to the beach, and so the opposite of that would be wearing sunglasses since wearing sunglasses is normal at the beach and also makes it hard to see if you have tears in your eyes at all.

If anything, i considered water to be the opposite of lava. Ice would be the opposite of Obsidian. Besides, if you had read a bit more carefully, you might have noticed that I already intended for their to be snow biomes throughout the Aether which could melt during Daey and refreeze during Day.

If Notch wants to make the Nether more interesting first, I think this contains some great ideas:

I was looking for a use for the "crying obsidian" and I had come up with the idea of using it as the portal to the Aether, but I like your idea of using glowstone much more, it fits better with the theme of the Aether. I am very interested in the possibility of the Aether being added to the game. But there is still one thing I am confused about; how does darkwood form? I have done much exploring of the Nether, and have not come across any naturally growing. Does it form from trees that I plant on soil i brought into the Nether?

maybe the sea can have an ice layer, so you still die but it's water underneath?
