I really like the Æther idea with NO
-endgame/ final boss, not in Minecraft spirit
-airplanes and such, ''
-falling back into surface World, you can't do this in Nether
And WITH
-new blocks, as in Nether
-Æ spelling over E. the Greek term over a preservative/ Pokémon power up
Hope this contributes to the discussion!
Good luck for Æther!
Agreed, mostly. Great idea, really hope it gets implemented.
It was a cool idea, but I Think most people saw the Æther first, or wanted an opposite to the hellish Nether. It also May have been too revolutionary for Minecraft moderates, or else didn't fully understand it. I don't completely like Æther as it stands, hope it wasn't me that made you feel bad because it was a really novel idea.

You can't get to Real World by digging up from Nether, so why should you be able to Fall to it from Æther? If it is a seperate realm ,Then it should be as independent as Nether.
This is so well thought out that it outweighs the Nether. One suggestion would be this:
An upgraded furnace using the Galestone to lessen the time it takes to smelt something, but with fuel still retaining it's smelting ratio (coal would still only smelt 8 items with one coal, but do it in the time that it would normally only smelt 4 items)
the recipe would be simple:
= galestone
[] [] []
[]
[] [] []
OR (for the fact that more wind = higher heat and thereby more insulation.)
This is so well thought out that it outweighs the Nether.
There is another suggestion proposing changes to the Nether already around, but I find it to be very unimaginative and to lack a cohesive theme. Sabata and I are hashing out a new suggestion that will hopefully handle improving the Nether a bit better.
An upgraded furnace using the Galestone to lessen the time it takes to smelt something, but with fuel still retaining it's smelting ratio (coal would still only smelt 8 items with one coal, but do it in the time that it would normally only smelt 4 items)
Overpowered, though getting the galestone would require you to smelt flowvein. I'd be more likely to say that that furnace should smelt faster when placed on top of galestone, but it will also occasionally beak the galestone block under it.
Okay, I have a few problems with some of the ideas.
Firstly: I don't like the thought of overly bright days in Aether. But this could work if we get more info on how the darktorches work. Will they absorb light or just emit darkness. And most importantly, how will they act during Aether night. Will they do nothing during night, not lowering the light anymore than normal night-levels. Or would they constantly absorb light making it even darker during night?
Secondly: Personally I think both the items needed for portals and the portals should be in the Nether. This makes it feel more progressive when you make your way through the realms. Seeing as water activates the Aetherportal, this would be difficult. But this could simply be solved by making it possible to place water in the nether, but not on blocks that originate in the nether. Like place a layer of cobblestone or dirt where you can place the water. The water would then flow normally, but would evaporate when coming in contact with any blocks that "belongs" in the Nether.
Glowstone also seems like the best blocks to make the Aetherportal with, no complains here.
Thirdly: Falling of an island in Aether should kill you. Instantly. Why? Because while the overworld has it's dangers, the Nether is more hostile, and surely will become more unfriendly with future updates. So if you need to go into the Nether to get the items to create a portal to get to Aether. Why should you drop down to the overworld when you fall off an island. Another argument to this is that if airships are implemented, you would gain a way of descending down from Aether to the Overworld without the use of portals, making the feel of Aether being another realm dim down and the usage of portals seem a little pointless.
I like all the other ideas however. Keep coming with the good ideas!

Well, seeing how darkwood grows in the Nether which has no day or night, and is supposed to function there, then it's safe to assume that it works constantly.

No. There are way too many gameplay and theological issues with having portals from one realm able to be placed in another. That was specifically WHY water is used for Aetherportals and why fire is disabled in Aether.

Sure, the aether needs dangers too, but even falling to the Overworld has a pretty high chance of you still dying, but even if you fall into lava in the Nether, you still have a CHANCE to survive. Also, the "not being connected to the overworld" issue is already explained by having a giant portal in the bottom of the Aether. This could easily be modified to simply not allow Airships to activate the portals.

But how would the darkwoodwork in Aether. I understand that the mechanic would work, but how? Like I said, will it absorb the light around itself or will it emit darkness. If it emit darkness it could be like the normal lighting as in the Overworld at all times. But if it absorbs light then would the Aether night become darker with the use of the torches?

In the picture of the Aetherportal it is yellow. So basically there would be this huge yellow area benath the flying islands? Then it would be kind of akward being able to see the overworld from the Aetherworld as you cant really see the other world through the portals. Although this could be explained through the sheer size of the portal.
But how would the darkwoodwork in Aether. I understand that the mechanic would work, but how? Like I said, will it absorb the light around itself or will it emit darkness. Sorry, I had been meaning to specify that, but was rushing. Darkwood is planned to work on n absorptive method, so it will subtract from existing light levels of the blocks. If the light level of a block is being influenced by more than one gloomwood object, then all gloomwood light subtraction would stack, resulting in darker and darker lighting.

Indeed, that would be an explanation if the view of the overworld was implemented, but it's also possible that being able to see Minecraft overworld from above would just be too impractical anyway. The portal would be more important, if only to avoid the "Nether isn't connected to Overworld! Aether shouldn't be either!" arguments (which are cropping up in huge number on the Mod page, since they are going with the idea that Aether actually is connected to overworld)

Yes. You should fall from the fall, no landing in overworld at all. No airships either, as was said, portals would be useless. As an anti-Nether, Æther should have absolutely no connection with overworld except portals (as nether).
•"Sure, the aether needs dangers too, but even falling to the Overworld has a pretty high chance of you still dying, but even if you fall into lava in the Nether, you still have a CHANCE to survive."
If you fall into the Nether's lava you don't end up in overworld. Maybe it should have a cold cloud base, because
•"having a giant portal in the bottom of the Aether. This could easily be modified to simply not allow Airships to activate the portals."
Is an odd idea not in nether that makes Æther even more accessible due to pillar jumping? Maybe I don't understand it, or I'd like it.
Can't figure out how to do these kinds of quotes yet, so that's why it's written as is.
You seem to be misunderstanding something. The portal in the bottom of the Aether would not also be in the top of the Overworld. Falling out of the Aether is one way and the ceiling effect on the overworld would still be in place. Airships can't transfer to and from the Aether (and must be left behind when traveling between them) nor would players be able to "pillar" up to the Aether.
As for quoting, it pretty much has to be adding in manually. Here is the "code" for my previous post, you can see where I have the [quote ] and [ /quote] tags to break things up.

An idea baby has spawned within my cranial cavity.
If Notch does implement the Aether (I've heard that he intends to, but I can't find official sources anywhere), then perhaps there could be special events in which the worlds collide? As in, a day when Nether mobs can spawn aboveground, and surface mobs in the Nether, and vice versa with the Aether. Perhaps even make the mobs hostile to each other?
I for one think it would be interesting to watch zombies and pigs meet their illegitimate lovechildren in the Underworld, while Creepers and Ghasts have massive wars, then have chickens just stare at all the surface mobs who keep falling to their dooms off of the floating islands.
I'm thinking perhaps Halloween/Winter Solstice for the Nether-surface fuse, and Easter/Summer Solstice for Aether-surface.
Or, maybe even have an official SMP world operated by Notch himself that can be accessed only on these days, and when you enter the server it's like the worlds literally fused together, instead of just mobs spawning in the wrong realms.
In one, there would be beaches of Soul Sand, Netherrack fusing with caves of stone, dungeons out in the open with more defense against incomers than against outcomers - some even spawning Ghasts - and even massive cliffs looming just below the ceiling blocking out most regular sunlight even at daytime. This would be the Nether fusion.
In the other, Aerwhales dodge through a disaster zone as the sky falls (quite literally) to Earth, floating islands suddenly being pulled down by gravity, giving huge risk of being smushed by upside-down trees, coasts that zoom off in every direction when you hit them, and once-glorious marble temples, their pieces scattered everywhere as they crash down. This would be the Aether fusion, ironically much more dangerous than the Nether's.
...Or, I dunno. That kind of thing would DEFINITELY not be doable by regular server standards, but since it would be Notch's servers, perhaps for special events?

Ah, thank you Grey Acumen! That makes much more sense. A portal at the Æther floor would make sense, and an Æther portal at overworld's ceiling makes as much sense as a Nether portal in it's floor.
